Maritime Alps Nature Park

Above the wooded valleys, granite and gneiss rise into a landscape of rock basins, scree and glacial lakes.

About

Above the wooded valleys, granite and gneiss rise into a landscape of rock basins, scree and glacial lakes. Lower down, villages, pasture and old woodland make room for slower visits. Choose one valley and an outing that fits your legs and the weather; a short drive on the map can end at the beginning of a long climb. Explore the grounds like a pro—download the Snappit app to instantly identify animals and plants.

The modern park took shape in 1995 when the earlier Argentera park and the Bosco e Laghi di Palanfrè reserve were joined. Its paths carry an older human history too: royal hunting, summer grazing and military fortification all left routes and buildings in the mountains. At Valasco, the former Savoy hunting lodge became a refuge in 2008. Around Valscura, engineered tracks and ruined barracks show how thoroughly the border mountains were once prepared for defence.

What to do here

Use Terme di Valdieri for the Valasco valley, Sant’Anna di Valdieri for the Meris valley and Lago sottano della Sella, and Palanfrè above Vernante for a shorter woodland circuit. Experienced walkers can choose one high-lake day, either Questa–Valscura or Fremamorta. Entracque is a useful valley base and a place to explore the relationship between people and wolves without undertaking a mountain hike.

Seasonal info

Season check, 19 October 2026: the park’s 2026 shuttle season ended on 13 September. Its 1 October refuge notice advertised particular early-October openings, not continuous service later in the month. For an autumn trip, confirm both the approach road and the hut directly, and carry food even if you hope to buy lunch.

Accessibility

Palanfrè is the gentlest hike listed here, but it has steep and uneven sections. For step-free visits, check the detailed Valderia access warning below and discuss your needs directly with the chosen centre.

Walks and routes

Palanfrè: beech woods and pasture

Start at the parking area below Palanfrè and follow the official loop through the Pianard pastures and along the edge of the Bosco bandito. The published circuit is 3.4 km with 235 m of ascent and about 1 hour 20 minutes of walking. Give it longer for the trees and village. Open the official Palanfrè route.

Although graded very easy by the portal, the route includes steeper ascent and descent, a stream crossing and uneven paths. It is not presented here as wheelchair- or pushchair-accessible.

Valasco: the generous first mountain walk

From Terme di Valdieri, the old military track and connecting path climb to the stream-crossed Valasco basin and its former royal hunting lodge. The official route lists 7.1 km and 411 m of ascent. Its detailed description gives about 1 hour 20 minutes uphill and 1 hour 15 minutes back, so allow a half-day with a stop. You can finish at the basin rather than committing to the high lakes. Open the official Valasco route.

The path option includes steps and a water crossing that can carry substantial spring flow. The track remains a climbing mountain route, not an independently accessible promenade.

Valasco: the generous first mountain walk

Lago sottano della Sella and Rifugio Livio Bianco

Leave Sant’Anna di Valdieri on the climbing mule track into Vallone della Meris. Woodland gives way to broad, sunny pasture, old pastoral shelters known as gias, and the lake beside Rifugio Livio Bianco. The official approach sheet lists 7.4 km and 897 m of ascent, with roughly three hours to reach the refuge. Those approach figures do not include your descent: reserve a full day and return by the same valley. Read the official approach description.

The first climb is steep and the open valley can feel hot in sunshine. This is a sustained hike, even though it avoids a summit or technical climbing.

Questa–Valscura: a full day among three lakes

From Terme di Valdieri, climb through Valasco to Rifugio Questa above Lago delle Portette, then continue by Lago del Claus and Lago inferiore di Valscura before descending to the shared lower approach. The portal publishes 19 km, 1,160 m of ascent and 6 hours 40 minutes. That makes this a long day before adding rests. The upper military mule track, with surviving stone-paved sections, is part of the appeal. Open the official Questa–Valscura route.

Expect steep paths, rocky ground and sustained time near 2,400 m. The official medium grade does not mean a casual lakeside stroll.

Questa–Valscura: a full day among three lakes

Fremamorta: lakes with an Argentera backdrop

The official circuit starts at Gias delle Mosche, climbs through sparse larch woodland to the Fremamorta lakes, and returns via Pian della Casa and the valley track. Its figures are 12.4 km, 985 m of ascent and 5 hours 45 minutes, graded hard. Four lakes and the view across to the Argentera provide the reward, but the rocky climb and long descent need attention. Read the official Fremamorta circuit.

This is an experienced-walker option with numerous switchbacks and uneven high ground. Follow the described return rather than improvising a shortcut between paths.

A gentle first visit

Choose Palanfrè alone for a half-day introduction. For a second day, stay in Valle Gesso and combine a pre-booked Entracque centre visit with time in the village. These are separate valley outings; there is no need to cross between all the trailheads in one day.

A walking weekend

Base yourself in Valle Gesso. Start with Valasco, then use your strongest weather day for either Livio Bianco or one of the high-lake circuits. If you are aiming for a hut-to-hut trip, the Alta Via dei Re is a separate seven-stage undertaking that needs its own bookings, snow checks and return transport.

Things to try

People and wolves in Entracque

The Centro Uomini e Lupi has two complementary locations: the village visitor centre and the wildlife area at Casermette. Multimedia interpretation is a useful alternative to a high hike, although the wildlife-area experience also includes outdoor elements. For October 2026, the published Sunday hours are 10:00–13:00 and 15:00–18:00 for the village centre, and 10:00–18:00 for the wildlife area. Booking is required. Verify the chosen section, ticket and time before setting out. Wolves housed in the enclosure are captive, not a promise of wild-wolf watching. Plan the centre visit.

Wildlife and habitats

European Beech

At Palanfrè, European beech (Fagus sylvatica) is part of the place’s living protective infrastructure. Take time with the old trunks and shaded woodland edges rather than treating the forest as a corridor to a distant objective.

Alpine Ibex

Alpine ibex (Capra ibex) are documented in the park’s wild fauna. Scan open rocky slopes from an established path, using binoculars rather than approaching. Leave animals an unobstructed route away and never offer food or salt.

Chamois

Chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) are the park’s emblem and the ungulate the authority says never disappeared from its territory. Watch quietly across open slopes; a distant animal is a good encounter without becoming a close photograph.

Golden Eagle

Golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) are part of the park’s documented birdlife. Bring binoculars for broad sky views, but leave nesting cliffs undisturbed and avoid interpreting any large soaring bird as an eagle without checking its features.

Stories and discoveries

Read the mountains in the rocks

The Argentera–Mercantour massif has a crystalline core of granite and gneiss. Glaciers left basins, moraines and smoothed rock surfaces that still organize the view, even where ice has retreated. Around the margins, limestone and dolomite bring a different landscape. These changing substrates help explain why neighbouring slopes can support different plants.

Small flowers, a large botanical story

Mediterranean influence, Alpine altitude and many small climatic niches meet here. The park documents locally distinctive plants including Primula allionii and Saxifraga florulenta. Enjoy flowers from the path and leave them where they grow; the botanical garden offers a more approachable introduction than searching steep cliffs for a particular rarity.

When to visit

Spring and early summer

Woodland and valley visits may suit this period better than high lakes. Snow can remain across mountain paths, and meltwater can make crossings more awkward. At Valasco, the official description specifically notes abundant water at a spring crossing. Move the destination down rather than treating a summer route description as snow advice.

Summer and early autumn

Longer days and staffed huts make this the main hiking season, subject to current snow and weather. Reserve beds, confirm meals and check the Arpa Piemonte forecast. The park’s mid-July to mid-September guidance for Alta Via dei Re is a planning window, not a promise that every high pass is clear.

Restrictions worth checking now

As checked on 19 October 2026, an August notice kept burned-area paths and forestry tracks on Monte Piastra closed, while reporting reopened access roads. Another notice closed the long ex-ENEL approach to Rifugio Genova and the affected right bank of Lago Rovina during works, with the direct path identified as the alternative then. Neither projected autumn completion nor silence proves reopening. These are specific areas, not a whole-park closure; verify any affected side trip with the park.

Late autumn and winter

Short daylight, ice and snow change the nature of these outings. Do not reuse the listed summer walking times for winter travel. Check road restrictions and appropriate mountain-weather and avalanche information; choose a booked valley activity when the conditions exceed your experience.

Getting there and practical advice

Valderia and valley information stops

Valderia at Terme di Valdieri groups around 500 plant species into representative habitats. It is an outdoor, seasonal visit, not an indoor wet-weather refuge. The park also lists information and exhibition facilities at Terme, Vernante and Entracque. Confirm opening before driving up: an evergreen listing can outlast its seasonal schedule.

Food, water and overnight stops

Refuges are useful planned destinations when staffed and booked. Carry drinking water and take your rubbish down; neither a stream nor a map’s fountain symbol establishes safe water. Check current toilet and water availability at your chosen parking area or centre. At Sant’Anna, do not rely on old listings for I Bateur: the park’s current news reports a change of management.

Arriving by road

For Valle Gesso, approach through Borgo San Dalmazzo and Valdieri, then choose the branch for your destination rather than a generic “park entrance”. Terme serves Valasco and Questa; the Valletta road beyond Terme serves Gias delle Mosche. Palanfrè is reached separately from Vernante through Valle Grande. Narrow upper roads and seasonal restrictions make a last check worthwhile.

Without a car

Cuneo is the main public-transport starting point for the Valle Gesso bus network. Check current Nuova Benese/Grandabus timetables and the final return before choosing a walk. The park’s summer 2026 information included a Terme bus and a pre-booked shuttle, but neither summer timetable nor shuttle availability should be assumed in October. Arrange the last leg before booking a remote overnight stay.

Parking and costs

There is no general park admission charge. Seasonal parking and equipped areas are separate: Terme di Valdieri, San Giacomo, Lago della Piastra and Lago Rovina each have their own arrangements. Consult the official parking page for the applicable season; a published summer charging period is not proof of autumn road access or facilities.

Plan around the actual approach

For reduced mobility, discuss the full journey with the operator: drop-off, gradients, path surface, steps, toilet access and assistance. The Valderia works notice of 18 June 2026 specifically warned that the temporary entrance was unsuitable for mobility aids. Its expected completion date was only a forecast. Ask the garden operator to confirm today’s access before making the trip; the older accessible-path description is insufficient.

Good to know before you go

Download the official route description and map before leaving the valley. A saved phone track needs battery backup; it does not override a closure sign or poor conditions.

Start long hikes early, carry layers, waterproofs, water and food, and leave your plan and return time with someone. Turn back before tiredness or changing weather removes your margin.

Buy supplies in the valley before driving to a trailhead. Check current parking arrangements, and never assume that a marked refuge offers meals outside its staffed season.

Frequently asked questions

There is no single gated entrance or general park admission ticket. You enter different valleys by their own roads and paths. Parking, botanical gardens, exhibitions, guided visits and refuge services can have separate charges; local restrictions still apply.
Palanfrè suits a shorter outing with woodland and village atmosphere. Choose Valasco if you want a longer walk into an open mountain basin. Save Questa–Valscura and Fremamorta for a full, settled-weather day when everyone is comfortable with sustained ascent and rocky paths.
Only on the routes and roads where dogs are permitted, always on a lead, with a muzzle carried as required. Consult the park’s dog-route map for your exact outing; a lead does not make every trail permissible. Do not transfer the rules from neighbouring Mercantour to the Italian park.
Book a staffed refuge and verify its operating dates. Ordinary camping and a brief overnight bivouac are different: the park’s rules describe bivouacking from one hour before sunset until one hour after sunrise. Check the current rules and any local restrictions before relying on that option; a marked emergency shelter is not a guaranteed serviced bed.
Ibex and chamois live in the park, but no walk promises a sighting. Bring binoculars and give animals space. Wolves at the Centro Uomini e Lupi wildlife enclosure are captive animals; seeing them is a different experience from observing a wild wolf, and even enclosure views are not guaranteed.
Some mountain itineraries connect with Mercantour, but that adds a separate park’s regulations and potentially a much longer day. Use a complete official cross-border route, check both sides’ conditions and arrange your return beforehand. The day walks described here do not require crossing the border.
