Naturpark Holsteinische Schweiz

Come for lake walks where a castle, a wooded peninsula and a quiet birdwatching stop can belong to the same day.

About

Come for lake walks where a castle, a wooded peninsula and a quiet birdwatching stop can belong to the same day. Plön makes an inviting first base: the railway station stands beside the Großer Plöner See, and you can set off towards the Schlossberg and Prinzeninsel without a separate drive.

The nature park covers roughly 750 square kilometres of eastern Schleswig-Holstein. Glaciers shaped its hills and lake basins; people added villages, estate landscapes, gardens and the raised hedges called Knicks. It is a whole inhabited region, so choose one outing rather than looking for a single park entrance. This guide concentrates on three manageable starting places: Plön, Eutin and Kasseedorf.

At Plön, the view changes from open lake to shaded woodland as you reach the Prinzeninsel. It is a peninsula despite its name. Along the shore, nature panels turn familiar scenery into questions: how do waterbirds live here, why are reeds disappearing, and what happens inside an old tree? Give children time to choose a panel and look for something it describes.

Kasseedorf offers a smaller-scale contrast. Ponds, wet woodland and open grazing land sit close together, and the Oberteich has a public observation platform. You might see a grebe, a kingfisher or a passing white-tailed eagle, but a quiet ten minutes watching the water is worthwhile even when the birds stay distant. Cattle help maintain the open landscape; they are managed grazing animals, separate from the wild species listed below. Eager to name that creature? Identify any animal you find during your visit using the Snappit app.

The landscape’s broad shape comes from ice, while its field boundaries tell a more recent story. Many Knicks were established during agricultural reforms in the late eighteenth century, creating dense living fences on earth banks. The nature-park association was founded in 1986. Its work links habitat care with walking routes, environmental education and the everyday life of the region.

What to do here

For a short nature-focused outing, take the 3.65 km Rundweg Eule from Kasseedorf village centre back to the same start. It combines village streets, the Oberteich observation stop, woodland and a Redder, a path enclosed by hedgebanks on both sides. The narrow natural paths and small hill need more care than the distance suggests. The former Naturerlebnisraum Eule is closed and private; follow the signed circuit around it and respect barriers.

For a half-day mixing town and nature, follow the 7.18 km Rundweg Prinzeninsel from the tourist information at Plön station. It climbs the cobbled Schlossberg, passes the Prinzenhaus, explores the wooded peninsula and returns along the lake promenade. The published distance includes the walking return. Nature panels and the Planetenpfad give children things to find along the way; you do not need to finish every panel or take a boat to complete the walk.

For a longer lake circuit, choose the Eutiner See Rundweg, about 9 km, beginning at the Seepark entrance beside the promenade. It crosses the Bebensundbrücke, continues through hilly woodland and returns by the castle garden and waterfront. There are benches, bridges and changing views across the Großer Eutiner See. The railway station and any car park away from the route require extra walking in both directions.

With less energy, sample the Plön shore panels and turn back after half your available walking time. In Eutin, pair a short waterfront visit with Schloss Eutin’s furnished museum rooms. The museum has its own admission and opening calendar; the garden is a separate outdoor visit.

Seasonal info

Check the current route and transport notices before travelling. B76 works near Plön are scheduled into December 2027, and rail engineering can change late services or longer-distance connections. At Kasseedorf, the former Eule experience grounds remain closed. Eutin’s lake circuit passes through the castle garden, which closes overnight and on Ascension Day. The castle museum closes in February and has seasonal opening days.

Accessibility

The Prinzeninsel circuit is listed as pushchair-suitable, but includes cobbles, an uphill Schlossberg section, bridges and woodland paths. That label is not a wheelchair-access survey. Kasseedorf has very narrow natural paths and a hill; Eutin’s full lake circuit includes hilly woodland and bridges. For a more controllable accessible visit, Schloss Eutin provides lift access to the museum and accessible toilets. Ask about your precise approach and equipment before setting out.

Walks and routes

Rundweg Eule

A compact circuit linking the village, Oberteich observation stop and a shaded hedgebank lane. Pause at the water instead of treating the walk as a timed lap.

No verified step-free or wheelchair route. The narrow section is a poor choice for a conventional pushchair.

Rundweg Eule

Rundweg Prinzeninsel

A town-to-woodland outing with Schlossberg, the Prinzenhaus area, peninsula shores and the lakeside promenade.

Officially tagged pushchair-suitable, with the slopes and mixed surfaces still to consider. Wheelchair access throughout is unverified.

Rundweg Prinzeninsel

Eutiner See Rundweg

A full lake circuit with woodland, bridges, frequent viewpoints and a return through the castle garden.

No whole-route wheelchair or pushchair suitability established. Choose a short, checked waterfront section or the accessible castle museum if the full terrain does not suit your group.

Eutiner See Rundweg

A small Kasseedorf morning

Walk the Eule circuit, give the Oberteich stop a quiet pause and have your picnic before returning to Am Dorfplatz. Keep the afternoon flexible; the closed former Eule grounds are not an extra attraction.

Plön without a car

Arrive at Plön station, use the facilities and follow the full Prinzeninsel circuit. Carry a picnic and leave time for nature panels. Check the return train before starting, particularly if travelling late.

Eutin with a weather choice

On a dry day, make the full lake circuit your main activity. In persistent rain, choose a short waterfront outing and the castle museum instead; both plans need separate station or parking approaches.

Things to try

Let a panel choose the next discovery

On the Plön nature trail, read one panel together and look for its subject without leaving the public path. The 31 panels extend over several sections; finding three interesting ones is enough for a good short visit.

Look through a living lane

In Kasseedorf’s Redder, compare the light in the middle of the path with the brighter open ground beyond. The hedgebanks are habitat, so explore with eyes and ears rather than climbing into them.

Give the lake a changing foreground

On the Eutin circuit, make a small set of pictures with water behind a tree, a bridge or the castle garden. Stop clear of other walkers before composing the picture.

Schloss Eutin at your own pace

Explore the furnished rooms without a guided-tour booking and use the German/English interpretation. Check seasonal opening first: the museum is closed in February and the principal floor is unheated. Private photography without flash is allowed. Ordinary pet dogs cannot enter; assistance dogs are welcome.

Wildlife and habitats

Scan the sky as well as the water from an existing shore path or platform. A distant eagle is a worthwhile sighting; do not seek a nest or move towards protected islands.

Pause quietly at the Oberteich platform and watch for a brief blue movement above the water. Keep the camera ready where you are; following the bird usually loses the view and disturbs the bank.

Watch a bird for a full minute rather than taking only one picture. A diving grebe may reappear well away from where it vanished; binoculars help you follow without approaching the shore.

Look for the pale bill and forehead against a dark body. Familiar birds are useful practice for comparing feeding behaviour; photograph from the path and never attract them with food.

On a warm visit, watch the same patch of water for repeated dragonfly patrols. A photograph of a settled insect is easier to identify than a blurred flight shot. Stay on the platform.

From the public route, scan exposed twigs and shrub tops. Keep plenty of distance from any repeatedly used perch, and leave dense bushes undisturbed rather than searching for nests.

Treat this butterfly as an occasional bonus. Watch flowers that are visible from the path and wait for an insect to settle; do not enter grazing land or trample vegetation for a closer image.

Compare a smooth trunk, a low branch and fallen leaves where you can see them from the path. Trees make reliable subjects when the birds remain hidden, and a second visit reveals the seasonal change.

Look from the path at the wetter ground and the trees growing there. Photograph the habitat as well as an individual tree; do not step into swamp woodland to inspect roots or small cones.

Lake water and reed margins

Open water, reed edges and sheltered shores offer different feeding and resting places. Watch from existing public viewpoints; a clear view across the lake is more useful than pushing through waterside vegetation.

Beech woods and wet alder woodland

Beech woodland gives the park much of its leafy character. Near the Prinzeninsel, wet alder woodland shows how quickly the habitat changes when water stays close to the surface.

Hedgebanks and lightly grazed ground

Knicks connect fields and woods; Kasseedorf adds a patchwork of open grazing and thorny shrubs. Managed cattle help keep parts of that landscape open, while wild birds and insects use its varied edges.

Stories and discoveries

Hedges built to hold livestock

Knicks are hedges planted on raised earth banks. Many grew from late-eighteenth-century farming reforms; today they connect patches of habitat through the worked landscape. A lane between two is called a Redder.

Ice made room for the lakes

Glaciers moved sediment, scooped hollows and left blocks of melting ice. Water later occupied many of these depressions, giving the park its close succession of hills and lakes.

A peninsula with an island name

You reach Plön’s Prinzeninsel on foot. Its name can suggest an island excursion, but the complete official walk returns to town over land.

When to visit

Leave room for weather and daylight

Spring woodland flowers, summer pond insects and autumn waterbirds give each season a different focus. Exposed shores can feel colder than sheltered town streets. Finish the Eutin garden section during opening hours, and keep slippery natural paths for a drier day.

Getting there and practical advice

Use the town stops well

Plön station has a WC and tourist information. In Eutin, tourist information is now at Markt 4 and supplies walking maps. Museum visitors have toilets at Schloss Eutin; the castle café is currently closed. Carry essentials for the quieter Kasseedorf circuit.

Choose your base before your connection

Plön, Bad Malente-Gremsmühlen and Eutin lie on the Kiel–Lübeck rail corridor. Check the actual travel date and the operator’s engineering notices. From 19 October to 12 December 2026, the RE83 closure is on the Lübeck–Büchen section, relevant to some longer journeys. B76 works affect road approaches near Plön into December 2027. For Kasseedorf, check rural bus options and the walk to Am Dorfplatz before relying on public transport; no frequent or direct service is assumed.

Match the whole outing to your needs

For the castle museum, a lift reaches the exhibition floor and accessible toilets are provided. The kitchen garden has usable paths, although some planting-area paths may be narrow for powered chairs. This does not establish access around the entire Eutin lake. For Plön, discuss the cobbles and slopes despite the official pushchair label.

Good to know before you go

Start with the whole walk

The Plön circuit returns to the station area; the Kasseedorf circuit returns to the village centre. For Eutin, start at the Seepark entrance and add your separate station or parking approach.

Use the current route page

Follow the named circuit’s signs and map. Older brochures give different lengths, and the roughly 5 km Plön nature-panel trail is not the full 7.18 km station circuit.

Check your journey home

Use the date-specific rail planner and erixx engineering notices. If you want a boat ride, confirm its operating day and last departure before making it your return plan.

Bring a picnic

Carry food, water, binoculars and a layer for exposed lake shores. Plön station has a WC; do not rely on finding a toilet or refreshment stop beside every pond.

Leave the reeds quiet

Watch from the public paths and platforms. Stay away from nests, do not land on protected lake islands, and let wildlife move without following or feeding it.

Keep dogs on the lead

Use the paths in woods and nature reserves, and follow local signs. Give grazing cattle room and keep children beside you around the animals.

Plan Eutin’s indoor stop

Check the museum calendar first. Its principal-floor rooms are unheated, and the Schlossküche café is currently closed, so plan lunch elsewhere.

Make a small photo collection

Try one broad lake view, one tree or leaf detail and one bird seen from a comfortable distance. Three careful pictures can be more satisfying than chasing a long species list.

Frequently asked questions

Choose Plön for a convenient station start and a varied 7.18 km circuit. Choose Kasseedorf for a shorter 3.65 km walk with a pond-watching pause, provided everyone can manage narrow natural paths. Eutin’s roughly 9 km circuit suits a longer walking day.
No. The former grounds are private and closed to visitors. The current Rundweg Eule description gives a walking circuit around them; keep to the signed route and do not enter the closed area.
White-tailed eagles occur around the park’s lakes, including Großer Plöner See and Kasseedorf’s ponds. A sighting is a bonus, never an appointment. Scan from public shores or platforms and enjoy the more familiar waterbirds too.
There is no single entrance for this whole landscape. Plan separately for parking, transport, museum entry or a boat trip. Schloss Eutin’s garden is free during its access hours, while the museum has its own admission.
Yes, when Schloss Eutin is open. You can visit the museum without booking a guided tour. Check the seasonal calendar, bring a warm layer and arrange food elsewhere while the castle café is closed.
