Naturpark Niederlausitzer Heidelandschaft

Come for the heath in flower, then discover how different the neighbouring peatland feels.

About

Come for the heath in flower, then discover how different the neighbouring peatland feels. In Forsthaus Prösa, sandy paths emerge from oak and pine woods into open country; in Der Loben, dark water, wet woodland and viewing platforms draw your attention closer to the ground. These are separate outings within a 484-square-kilometre nature park, so choose one area for your walk.

For a first visit with children, the erlebnisREICH Naturpark centre in Schloss Doberlug makes a useful starting point. Its interactive exhibition explains the landscape through clues and discoveries, and the outdoor activity area gives younger visitors somewhere to climb and balance. Pick up a route map here before heading out, or make the centre your main destination if the weather turns.

The heath has a human history. Military use kept large areas of Prösa open, and grazing and cutting now prevent the sand grassland and heather from turning into woodland. Any sheep you meet are domestic animals doing conservation work. The cranes in the marsh and hoopoes on the heath are wild birds: enjoy the possibility of seeing them, but let the landscape and smaller discoveries carry the day. Take the ultimate field guide with you: use the Snappit app to identify birds, plants, and animals on your trip.

The nature park was proclaimed on 24 May 1996. Its landscapes tell several different stories: former military ground in Prösa, old extraction sites, orchard country and drained peatland now being rewetted. At Der Loben, blocking and raising drainage channels helps retain water; the changing balance between water and woodland is part of what you see on the walk.

What to do here

Choose the signposted 7.3 km Thurmberg-Tour from the Heide- und Waldparkplatz Kraupa for the classic heath walk. It crosses the southern Prösa heath, passes the oak-covered Thurmberg and returns through Kraupa. There are gentle climbs, gravel tracks and substantial sandy sections; this is a walking outing rather than an easy pushchair circuit.

For peatland, take the approximately 7.5 km Loben circuit from Waldparkplatz Heubrücke near Hohenleipisch. Wooden figures, information panels, the Lobenturm and Sonnentausteg give children several reasons to stop. The route follows unsealed woodland and gravel paths. Keep to the route and platforms, including when photographing plants.

Closer to Doberlug-Kirchhain, the 6.3 km Heidespaziergang starts at the forest car park at the end of Torgauer Straße. It visits the separate Weißhaus heath over a former coach road, concrete military track and woodland paths. This route has no dedicated waymarking: download its map first. Save it for another day if you have already chosen one of the southern circuits.

Seasonal info

The Sonnentausteg in the Altes Moor reopened after repairs on 28 September 2026. Check the nature park’s latest notices before travelling. In hot weather, take water and sun protection onto the exposed heath. Choose the exhibition during storms, and take care on damp wooden surfaces.

Accessibility

The Thurmberg route has loose sand and short climbs. The Loben circuit is unsealed, and neither outdoor circuit should be assumed to be wheelchair-accessible. Schloss Doberlug offers step-free access and accessible toilets; its courtyard includes cobbles. Ask the centre about the best outdoor option for your chair or pushchair.

Walks and routes

Thurmberg-Tour from Kraupa

Follow the signed circuit from Heide- und Waldparkplatz Kraupa through woodland onto the heath, towards Thurmberg, and back through Kraupa. The optional out-and-back to the covered picnic tables at Drei Eichen adds distance; return to the same junction before continuing.

Best tackled on foot; loose sand makes pushing small wheels difficult.

Thurmberg-Tour from Kraupa

Der Loben circuit from Heubrücke

Begin at Waldparkplatz Heubrücke. Follow the circuit past the wooden Odin figure, along Heuweg to the Lobenturm, then south towards Goldgrube and Kiepenweg. The return passes the former clay-pit area and the Sonnentausteg at Altes Moor. Use the leaflet’s walking-route line, since cycle routes also cross the area.

For a wheelchair visit, ask the centre about the current path condition and access to each viewpoint before setting out.

Der Loben circuit from Heubrücke

Heidespaziergang at Weißhaus

Start at the forest car park at the end of Torgauer Straße in Doberlug-Kirchhain. The map takes you from the old coach-road cycleway onto the concrete military track, across the heath and through woodland before circling its edge back to the outward track.

For a wheelchair visit, ask the centre whether the mix of slabs and woodland tracks will suit your needs.

One unhurried day

If you want an introduction indoors, visit Schloss Doberlug first and then transfer to one trailhead. Otherwise go straight to Kraupa for heath or Heubrücke for peatland, and spend your spare time looking closely rather than adding a second long walk.

A shorter family outing

Choose the visitor centre, its outdoor activity area and a relaxed break. The full countryside circuits are optional; a child who enjoys balancing and solving one landscape puzzle has already had a worthwhile visit.

Things to try

A habitat photo pair

Ask each person to choose one close-up and one landscape picture. Compare Prösa’s dry sand and woody heather with the water and mosses of Der Loben on a second outing. Keep every photo stop on the public route.

Follow the landscape clues

At erlebnisREICH, choose a few of the twelve exhibition trails rather than trying to finish everything. Exhibition tablets are available, so you do not need to download the app to take part.

Make the exhibition the outing

The nature centre’s detective challenge is suitable from age eight and is included with normal exhibition admission. It gives older children a shared problem to solve while you explore how mining and other land uses changed the region.

Wildlife and habitats

The simplest late-summer subject: small flowers covering low shrubs beside the Prösa paths. Try a close view from the path, then a wider picture showing the heath and woodland together.

Pause quietly at the Lobenturm and scan the wetland with binoculars. Cranes can be distant or hidden; a call or a bird crossing overhead may be your encounter. Keep away from nesting areas.

In spring, listen along the open heath and woodland edge. A hoopoe is a rewarding chance sighting, so stay on the route and let it approach or move away in its own time.

Make the oaks a subject when birds are quiet. Compare the shape of a leaf still on the tree with the rough bark and broad branching above you; photographs work without collecting anything.

This is a bonus animal rather than a dependable sighting. Look at tree trunks and path edges as you pass through the oak woods. Never lift bark or break open rotten stumps to search for larvae.

Look for pink bells in damp heath visible from the Loben path. Compare this wet-ground plant with the common heather of dry Prösa, and use your zoom rather than stepping into the bog.

Low bilberry bushes form part of the woodland undergrowth on the northern walk. Look at their leaves from the path; their presence helps children notice the change from open heath to shaded forest.

From July onward, slow down beside the heath’s vegetation and look for the angular outline of a mantis. Camouflage makes it easy to overlook. Photograph any insect where you find it, without handling or moving it.

Watch from the route

Use designated paths in Prösa, leash dogs and keep clear of grazing flocks and working dogs. In the peatland, stay on paths and viewing structures. Take photographs without picking plants, disturbing dead wood or trying to draw wildlife closer.

Stories and discoveries

Orchards belong to the story too

The country between Kraupa and Döllingen contains Brandenburg’s largest continuous traditional orchard area. Döllingen’s Pomologischer Schau- und Lehrgarten displays hundreds of fruit and nut varieties, many of them old cultivars. Check its visiting dates before making a separate trip.

Water changes the woodland

Rewetting in Der Loben can leave trees standing dead as water returns. That changing view is connected to peatland restoration, rather than something a visitor should try to tidy up.

When to visit

Choose what you want to notice

Visit in spring for the contrast between fresh woodland leaves and the open heath; return during the heather bloom for colour. In autumn, take binoculars and leave time to watch the sky as well as the path. In winter, favour a shorter daylight outing and an indoor stop when the centre is open.

Getting there and practical advice

Your planning base

The centre is at Schlossplatz 1, Doberlug-Kirchhain; visitor parking is at Schloßstraße 10. Staff provide route information and maps. Make toilet and food stops before driving to a forest trailhead.

Match the journey to the walk

For the centre, search VBB for Doberlug (EE), Schloss. For the Loben, use Hohenleipisch station and add the approach shown on the leaflet map. Kraupa, Gemeindeverwaltung serves the Thurmberg area. The Heidespaziergang leaflet lists Kirchhain, Lausitzkaserne, but warns of limited school-day service; verify a workable return before relying on it.

Ask about your specific needs

Schloss Doberlug has four designated accessible parking spaces approximately 300 m from the entrance and step-free access to an accessible toilet. The cobbled approach may matter for smaller wheels. Outdoor trail length alone says little about how manageable loose sand or wet gravel will feel.

Visitor information

Sonnentausteg access

The repaired Sonnentausteg has been open again since 28 September 2026. Later local notices and barriers take priority over the route leaflet.

Good to know before you go

Choose your start

Navigate to the named trailhead, not simply to the nature park. Doberlug’s centre, Kraupa and the Loben entrances are separate places.

Bring the map

Keep the official route leaflet offline. The northern Heidespaziergang is not signposted as a dedicated circuit.

Plan the last connection

Check VBB for your exact travel day and return journey. A village bus stop or station is not necessarily the walk’s starting point.

Give grazing animals space

Keep dogs leashed in Prösa and stay well away from sheep and working dogs.

Pack for a full walk

Bring drinks and a picnic rather than relying on refreshments halfway round.

Look without collecting

Photograph flowers and insects where they are. Leave dead wood untouched and watch birds quietly from public paths.

Check centre opening

The exhibition normally opens Tuesday–Sunday, with shorter winter hours. Check holiday arrangements before using it as your rainy-day plan.

Frequently asked questions

Start at erlebnisREICH Naturpark in Schloss Doberlug. The outdoor activity area and exhibition let you vary the pace without committing to a long circuit. The additional detective challenge is aimed at children aged eight and over.
Yes, but plan a particular destination. Use Doberlug-Kirchhain and the bus stop Doberlug (EE), Schloss for the centre, or Hohenleipisch station for the Loben area. Allow for the walk between the station and the circuit. Check connections through VBB.
It is an information and exhibition centre. The outdoor walks start separately at their trailheads. The exhibition has an admission charge and shares its ticket with the Schloss Doberlug museum exhibitions.
Possibly. The Lobenturm overlooks crane habitat, and hoopoes use Prösa’s open landscape. Binoculars and quiet pauses help, but neither is a reliable close-up subject. Heather, leaves and changing habitats are easier things for children to photograph.
