Landschaftspark Herzberge

Come to Landschaftspark Herzberge for sheep-grazed meadows, quiet woodland paths and a place where children can invent their own outdoor games.

About

Come to Landschaftspark Herzberge for sheep-grazed meadows, quiet woodland paths and a place where children can invent their own outdoor games. This green part of Lichtenberg has the feel of a working landscape: fences divide pastures, fruit trees stand in meadow grass, and patches of scrub and small waters leave room for wildlife. Begin on the public park side of Herzbergstraße, west of the KEH hospital, and decide whether today is mainly for a walk or for play.

The sheep help explain the place. AGRARBÖRSE’s Rauhwollige Pommersche Landschafe move between grazing enclosures, keeping vegetation open as part of the park’s management. They are domestic farm animals, cared for by a shepherd. Watch from outside the fence and let their current grazing location shape your visit; there is no single enclosure where you can always expect to find them.

For children, the Maulwurfshügel nature-play area is a lovely reason to slow down. Opened in May 2026, it offers hills, trees and natural materials for self-directed play. A small construction of loose branches can become the main event of the afternoon. Keep this kind of play within the designated area: elsewhere, piles of wood and stones may be protected animal habitat. The play area closes whenever sheep are grazing inside it. Be ready to snap and learn! Get the Snappit app to identify any nature species you find here.

The landscape project began in the early 2000s, transforming disused industrial and railway land, former growing areas and other fragmented spaces into connected green space. Sheep grazing began in 2009. Herzberge received landscape-protection status in 2018, and habitat work has included the relocation of sand lizards from a former railway site in Schöneweide. The new nature-play area opened on 18 May 2026.

What to do here

Follow the public park paths past the meadows and woodland edges, stopping wherever the view gives you something to talk about. Compare short grazed grass with taller vegetation, or take one wide landscape photograph and one close-up from the path. Sand lizards live in specially managed habitat here, but their enclosures are off limits; a distant glimpse is a bonus.

For a short outing, use the Herzbergstraße-side park entrance, visit Maulwurfshügel if it is open, and retrace your approach to that same entrance. For a longer walk, add an out-and-back section along the open park paths beside the grazing landscape before returning. Neither suggestion is a waymarked circuit, and no measured distance is supplied. The play area's hills and loose natural materials differ from a straightforward path walk; choose how much uneven ground suits your group.

The neighboring KEH is a working hospital. Keep to public park routes and respect campus signs, patients and treatment areas. The Museum Kesselhaus inside the hospital grounds is a separate, appointment-only visit. Heating-pipe work between Rhinstraße and Zentralfriedhof is planned through 2027: follow local barriers and turn back if a section is closed, rather than completing a loop at all costs.

Seasonal info

Spring brings fresh growth and the flock’s lambing season; keep a respectful distance and check separately for any organized sheep-related event. Summer suits lingering over the meadow landscape, while autumn brings changing leaves and fruit-tree shapes. Winter is still a time for a daylight walk, with fewer expectations of small-animal sightings. The sheep rotate between paddocks throughout the year.

Accessibility

No complete audited step-free park circuit is confirmed. Ask AGRARBÖRSE about current surfaces, gates and construction diversions before relying on a wheelchair or pushchair route. Maulwurfshügel includes hills, trees and loose materials, so access to the area does not mean every play feature is suitable for everyone. The museum’s boiler level is reached only by stairs.

Don't miss

1

Grazing with a purpose

Pomeranian sheep help maintain the open landscape while giving families an engaging animal-watching stop.

2

Maulwurfshügel

A designated nature-play area invites children to build and explore when it is open for visitors.

3

A mix of habitats

Meadows, old trees, woodland and small waters sit close together within the city.

4

An industrial past

Former railway and growing areas have become a public landscape; the nearby boiler-house museum adds another chapter.

Walks and routes

Choose a short or longer Herzbergstraße out-and-back

Start at the public park on the Herzbergstraße side, west of KEH. For 60–90 minutes, follow the local signs to Maulwurfshügel, play if it is open, then retrace your approach. For a 2–3-hour visit, add an out-and-back section on open paths beside the meadows and grazing landscape. Finish at the same park entrance. These are flexible visit suggestions, not a named trail.

Ask AGRARBÖRSE about a firm, step-free return route and current construction diversions if needed.

An unhurried family morning

Begin with the short park-and-play option. If the play area is closed, watch the landscape from the paths instead. Choose your turnaround while everyone still has energy, then retrace the route to the entrance and your transport.

Things to try

Build, then look again

Inside the open Maulwurfshügel area, let children choose a small project using the loose materials intended for play. Try a balance line or a miniature shelter, following the posted rules. Leave living plants and animals alone, and keep this activity out of the protected habitat enclosures elsewhere in the park.

Three views of one landscape

Find a safe stopping place on a public path. Each person chooses a different view: open grass, a tree-rich edge or a distant grazing group. Take a picture or sketch and compare what each view would offer an animal. You can do this without naming every species or leaving the path.

A museum visit needs an appointment

Museum Kesselhaus, in House 29 at Herzbergstraße 79, covers boiler technology, the hospital’s history and architect Hermann Blankenstein. Arrange a visit with [email protected] or 0176 63191257. The boiler level is upstairs and reached by stairs only. If no appointment is available, shorten or postpone the outdoor outing rather than expecting an indoor refuge on arrival.

Wildlife and habitats

Sand lizards were relocated here into specially created, monitored habitat. Watch only from the public path outside the enclosure; do not step closer or shift a stone for a clearer picture.

A brown hare would be a rewarding chance encounter in the open landscape. Pause on the path and scan quietly rather than walking into the grass to flush an animal out.

Keep an eye on the trees and overhead during a quiet walking stop. A goshawk sighting is a possibility, never a promised feature of the visit; avoid seeking out nests.

If a grass snake appears beside a path, give it space to move away. Take any photograph from where you are; keep out of water margins and never try to uncover a hiding animal.

A toad crossing a path is a reason to stop and let it pass. Look without touching, and make the path-edge photograph your limit rather than following it into cover.

Treat this as one of the park’s quiet conservation stories rather than an animal you should expect to find. Ask about an organized amphibian-focused activity; do not net ponds or enter their margins.

The newts give a small pond ecological importance even when its surface looks empty. Enjoy the view from permitted paths; leave identification at a distance unresolved if the animal is too small to see clearly.

Stories and discoveries

Wood piles with a job

The lizard project created places for shelter and basking within former grazing land. Some deliberately arranged wood and stone can therefore be important habitat. A tidy-looking landscape would not necessarily serve these animals better.

When to visit

Come back to the same view

Photograph the same meadow view on another visit. Compare grass height, leaves and the flock’s position to see how seasons and landscape care interact. Stay on the public path for each picture.

Getting there and practical advice

Pack for an outdoor visit

Maulwurfshügel includes sitting circles made from stone and wood. Bring drinks and any snack you need. A reliable public visitor toilet and an unrestricted park café stop are not confirmed here; hospital facilities should not be assumed to serve a park outing. For organized nature education, contact AGRARBÖRSE in advance.

Use current directions to the Herzbergstraße side

For this visit plan, aim for the public park west of the KEH hospital near Herzbergstraße. Through 12 December 2026, the usual Ev. Krankenhaus KEH tram stop is not served because of track works. The hospital lists a shuttle from Siegfriedstraße for access to its grounds; check BVG for your actual public-transport journey rather than relying on the normal tram list. The street walk to and from the park is additional to the visit estimates.

Check a complete return route

Ask about the entrance, gates, ground surface and any construction diversion on the route you want to use. A short walk can still be unsuitable if the return includes a narrow or uneven section. For Maulwurfshügel-specific questions, contact [email protected]. For the museum, ask what can be visited without stairs before booking.

Visitor information

Two works notices to check

The KEH tram stop is not served during track works scheduled through 12 December 2026. Separately, BEW plans heating-pipe works from Rhinstraße to Zentralfriedhof through 2027. Check current travel information and obey on-site closures; neither notice should be read as a blanket closure of the whole park. Maulwurfshügel also closes temporarily when sheep graze inside.

Good to know before you go

Check the journey

The KEH tram stop is out of service during works scheduled through 12 December 2026; use current BVG directions.

Let the flock be

Watch sheep from outside the enclosures, keep dogs under control and leave feeding to their carers.

Respect habitat fences

Do not enter the sand-lizard areas or move the wood and stones placed there.

Keep play in its place

Maulwurfshügel can close for grazing. A closed gate is a reason to switch to a path walk.

Bring the basics

Carry water and a snack, and plan toilet needs before arrival rather than relying on hospital facilities.

Arrange learning ahead

AGRARBÖRSE offers nature education for groups and interested individuals; check its current programme.

Leave time to return

Retrace your outward path if works interrupt the route, and allow extra time to reach your actual transport stop.

Frequently asked questions

Ordinary public park visits do not require an arranged tour. Book organized activities separately, and check Maulwurfshügel’s entrance notices because grazing can temporarily close that area.
No. They are a managed flock of Rauhwollige Pommersche Landschafe used for landscape care. The sand lizards have a different story: animals were relocated here into managed habitat and now live outdoors in protected areas.
Plan around the public park paths. Hospital buildings and treatment areas have their own purposes and access arrangements. For the Museum Kesselhaus, make an appointment and use the agreed visitor approach.
Only if you have arranged a visit. It is not a walk-in shelter, and the boiler display is upstairs with stair access only.
