The origins of HollyWild Animal Park trace back to the 1940s when the Meeks family began caring for farm animals and native South Carolina wildlife in Spartanburg County. David Meeks, the youngest son, developed a profound connection with animals, eventually acquiring more exotic species like a pet monkey, ocelot, cougar, and wolves, which expanded their backyard menagerie. This passion led to the formal opening of "M&M Zoo" in 1970, featuring a variety of animals including an Asian elephant named Donna. David Meeks' unique talent in working with wild animals soon caught the attention of Hollywood, leading to the establishment of Cinema Animal Talent. Animals from the park appeared in over 65 feature films and numerous commercials, including famous Lincoln Mercury ads. Recognizing these cinematic connections, the zoo was renamed "HollyWild" in the early 1980s. It transitioned to a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 1999, broadening its educational and conservation efforts. While facing challenges, including a barn fire in 2015, the park has evolved, and as of 2025, continues its mission with a focus on drive-through experiences, private encounters, and glamping, with new generations of the Meeks family involved.
