The St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park offers an unforgettable journey into the world of crocodilians and a diverse array of other fascinating wildlife. More than just an alligator farm, this historic institution is a fully accredited zoo and the only place in the world where you can see all 24 recognized species of crocodilians, from the formidable saltwater crocodile Maximo to the elusive Indian gharial. Visitors can explore immersive exhibits like "Land of Crocodiles" to witness these ancient reptiles in meticulously recreated habitats, or marvel at the rare and mesmerizing Albino Alligators, said in Cajun folklore to bring good fortune.
Beyond its reptilian stars, the park boasts a rich collection of exotic birds and mammals. Wander through "Birds of Africa" to observe vibrant avian species like crowned cranes and impressive Cape griffon vultures, or encounter playful red-ruffed lemurs and cotton-top tamarins. One of the most captivating experiences is the renowned Wading Bird Rookery, where wild native birds, including Roseate Spoonbills, egrets, and herons, nest freely in the trees above the alligator-filled lagoons. This unique symbiotic relationship, where alligators deter tree-climbing predators, creates an unparalleled birdwatching and photography opportunity, especially during nesting season from March through July.
For those seeking an adrenaline rush, the park offers Crocodile Crossing, a thrilling zipline adventure that allows guests to soar over seven acres of the zoo, including directly above the alligators and crocodiles. Whether you're captivated by prehistoric predators, enchanted by colorful birds, or seeking an educational encounter with global wildlife, the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park promises a day filled with discovery, excitement, and appreciation for the natural world. Take the ultimate field guide with you: use the Snappit app to identify birds, plants, and animals on your trip.
The St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park is one of Florida's oldest continuously running attractions, first opening its doors on May 20, 1893. It began as a small exhibition at St. Augustine Beach, where George Reddington and Felix Fire collected alligators to attract visitors to a museum and souvenir shop. The reptiles quickly became the main draw, leading to the park's popularity. After natural disasters in the 1920s, the park relocated to its current 10-acre site on Anastasia Boulevard. Over the decades, it expanded its collection to include a variety of other reptiles, mammals, and birds, growing beyond its initial focus on alligators. A significant milestone occurred in 1993, when, for its 100-year anniversary, the park achieved the distinction of becoming the first facility in the world to display every recognized species of crocodilian.
Walk the boardwalks and trails, catch daily wildlife shows and feeding demonstrations (especially alligator feedings at noon and 3:00 p.m.), explore the various themed habitats, and for the adventurous, tackle Crocodile Crossing. Consider optional animal encounters for closer interactions with select animals like Galapagos Tortoises.
Summer brings extended hours but also high heat and humidity. The Wading Bird Rookery is most active for nesting from March to July. During cold snaps, some animals may be less active or moved indoors.
The park is highly accessible and ADA compliant. Wheelchair access is available throughout the park, including shows and restrooms. Manual wheelchairs are available for complimentary use. The park is also Sensory Inclusive™ and offers sensory bags with noise-canceling headphones and fidget gadgets. Discounts are offered for guests entering in wheelchairs. Note that some animal encounters or "Behind the Scenes" tours may involve unpaved paths, potentially requiring transfer from electric to manual wheelchairs.
