The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center first opened its doors in 1986. However, a fire under Stearns Wharf soon after its opening necessitated a brief closure. It reopened about a year later in 1987, with repairs completed and new exhibits added. In 2005, the facility underwent a significant expansion and reopening, costing $6.5 million. During this period, businessman and local resident Ty Warner was a major donor, and the center was briefly known as the "Ty Warner Sea Center." Following a rebranding of its parent organization, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, in 2016, the Sea Center reverted to its original name, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center. It remains owned and operated by the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.
