Come to Upper Bavarian Forest Nature Park for close-up bog discoveries, lakeside walks and playful ways to explore the natural world. Arrach is a good first stop: give the children time at the Seepark, then cross to the moor and slow down over the plants beside the boardwalk.
The park covers the whole district of Cham and extends into neighbouring Schwandorf district. Its villages, farmland, forests and protected wetlands make a varied holiday region, with several separate starting points. Arrach, Waldmünchen and Furth im Wald are choices for different days rather than stops on one walking circuit.
Use the full name Naturpark Oberer Bayerischer Wald when planning. It is separate from both Naturpark Bayerischer Wald and Nationalpark Bayerischer Wald. This guide concentrates on the Cham side of the region, where a satisfying family outing can fit around a short walk and plenty of time to look. Enhance your adventure: download the Snappit app to identify the local species you encounter.
Four local nature-park associations, founded between 1965 and 1968, joined together in 1973 to form Naturpark Oberer Bayerischer Wald. The landscape carries older stories too. Arracher Moor has been protected since 1995, and wetland restoration helps retain the water on which it depends. Perlsee is a working reservoir: opened in 1962, it contributes to flood protection and electricity generation. Looking along its dam adds another dimension to a simple lakeside walk.
In Arrach, start at Seepark and use the signed crossing of the main road to reach the Moorlehrpfad. The moor trail itself is about 1 km; the approach is additional. Its boardwalk passes through wet ground where ordinary woodland gives way to specialist plants. Let children tackle the moor quiz, then look for the difference between wooded and open patches without leaving the boards. For more walking, the approximately 3.5 km Natur-Art-Parks circuit links the moor, glass artworks, Gut Kleß’s energy installations and village craft stops before returning to Seepark. That longer circuit includes the moor rather than adding another 3.5 km to it.
At Waldmünchen, follow the short Wm02 Perlseerundwanderweg from the nature-park information board by the minigolf area near Alte Ziegelhütte. The circuit is 3.78 km, using shoreline paths, a boardwalk, the Perlsee bridge and the dam. Expect some ups and downs and steps at the bridge. Save energy for the Räuberhöhle adventure playground; the lake and its recreation facilities can fill the rest of a relaxed afternoon.
Furth im Wald’s Wildgarten suits children who prefer discoveries to distance targets. Explore willow shelters, a suspension bridge, unusual artworks and an underwater viewing station looking into a fish pond. Its imaginary creatures and dinosaur artwork are part of the playful design. The pond is a managed visitor attraction, so treat what you see there separately from wildlife in the park’s nature reserves.
For rain, Arrach’s Drexler-Hof Mineralienmuseum offers local and international crystals and a children’s quiz. It is at Hausfelder Straße 1, and the museum is upstairs with stair-only access.
The lake’s summer recreation services have their own seasons and opening times. Rain, frost and wet leaves can make wooden paths slippery; postpone the moor section if the boards are icy. Wildgarten currently lists daily entry between 10:00 and 17:00; check its opening information before travelling, especially outside the warmer months. Drexler-Hof publishes Monday–Saturday opening, so confirm access before relying on the museum for a Sunday or holiday.
Choose carefully in Arrach: the approximately 1 km Seepark recreation loop has a maximum gradient of 2%, but the moor is more demanding. Its boardwalk has a 7 cm entrance step, a short slope up to 13% and gaps between boards. Check these against your wheelchair, walker or pushchair. The short Perlsee circuit has bridge steps and is not a step-free loop. Wildgarten describes much of its site as wheelchair-traversable; ask which individual attractions you can reach. The mineral museum requires stairs.
A boardwalk and quiz introduce a living bog and its specialist plants.
A manageable lake circuit with a dam, waterside views and an adventure playground.
Willow shelters, imaginative objects and a window below the pond’s surface.
Outdoor artworks pair naturally with a mineral-museum visit.

Start with Seepark playtime, then choose the moor trail or full art circuit. Have a picnic or lunch locally, leaving the museum for a rainy afternoon.
The downloadable Fanny-and-Beppi puzzle booklet turns the lake circuit into a sign-reading game. Use it for the questions and characters; follow the current route signs on the ground.
Try the children’s mineral quiz at Hausfelder Straße 1. The operator lists Monday–Friday 10:00–17:30 and Saturday 10:00–16:00; confirm holiday arrangements. Allow for stairs to the museum.
Bogbean grows in Arrach’s transition mire. Look from the boardwalk and use the interpretation panels to help distinguish the small wetland plants.
Downy birches form part of Arrach’s bog woodland. Photograph a tree with the wet ground around it to show the habitat.
Common bilberry grows in drier parts of Arracher Moor. Compare these low shrubs with plants in wetter patches; leave berries and leaves untouched.
Bog bilberry also grows at Arrach. Photograph the whole visible plant for identification later; never taste berries to identify them.
At Arracher Moor, altered watercourses and woody vegetation can reveal beaver activity. Observe from the public path, well away from dams and lodges.
Adders use open parts of the moor. Keep your distance if one appears; never reach into vegetation or reposition a snake for a photograph.
Fire salamanders occur in Arrach’s wetland habitats but may remain hidden. If one appears beside the path, watch without handling it.
Otters occur across the park’s waterways and are mainly active around dusk and at night. A glimpse is a bonus; watch only from public paths.
Arrach contains raised-bog cores alongside transition mire and fen. Keeping water in the site is essential; conservation work addresses past drainage and unwanted tree growth.
Seepark has an accessible public toilet and seating. Perlsee has public toilets, a restaurant and a seasonal kiosk. Wildgarten has a compost toilet.
Check both the main-line arrival and the local branch before setting out. The autumn RB27 works can affect connections even if your final train is RB28 to Arrach or RB29 to Waldmünchen. Buy your replacement-bus ticket before boarding.

Start with the big picture, then zoom in to explore individual wildlife observations around this place.
Choose your starting point
There is no single park gate. Navigate to Seepark Arrach, the Perlsee minigolf area or Wildgarten’s Dabergerstraße parking, about 150 m from its entrance.
Rail arrival
RB28 serves Arrach, RB29 Waldmünchen and RB27 Furth im Wald, with connections through Cham. Add the walk or onward connection from the station to your chosen attraction.
Autumn 2026 rail works
From the evening of 15 October until early 20 November, replacement buses affect RB27 between Schwandorf and Cham and between Furth im Wald and Domažlice. Check the exact journey and allow extra connection time.
Cash for Wildgarten
Admission is paid and the operator currently accepts cash only. Bring drinks and a snack for your outdoor day.
Keep to the paths
Arracher Moor has a marked-path requirement. Keep dogs leashed, leave plants untouched and give any animal space to move away.
Help with the journey
Accessible low-floor vehicles are not guaranteed on the replacement buses, and pushchair space is limited. Arrange mobility assistance in advance.
Recent snaps will appear here as new observations are added.
