Naturpark Nördlicher Oberpfälzer Wald

Come for a day of pond birds, rounded granite boulders and the remarkably neat columns of an old volcano.

About

Come for a day of pond birds, rounded granite boulders and the remarkably neat columns of an old volcano. The Nördlicher Oberpfälzer Wald spreads across about 1,380 square kilometres around Weiden and Neustadt an der Waldnaab, reaching east to the Czech border. Villages, working fields, woods and fishponds all belong to the landscape. Choose one corner for the day rather than trying to tour the whole park.

For a first outing with children, start near Eschenbach. The Holzweg turns a woodland walk into a series of small experiments: step inside a giant birdhouse, try the sound stations and see who finds their way through the labyrinth. Nearby, the Rußweiher ponds reward a different pace. Settle at a viewing platform with binoculars and watch what happens on the water. Black-headed gulls and black-necked grebes breed here, and an osprey may appear. These are wild birds, free to come and go.

Farther east, the Doost and Lerautal offer walks beside streams running between granite blocks. Leave the rocks where they are and enjoy their shapes from the paths. At Parkstein, look up at the polygonal basalt columns, then use the museum to work out how cooling molten rock made them. The ponds, granite valleys and volcanic hill each tell a different part of the region's story.

When choosing maps or accommodation, keep the full park name handy. Naturpark Oberpfälzer Wald, centred on the Schwandorf district farther south, is a separate neighbouring park. This guide covers the Nördlicher Oberpfälzer Wald. Don't forget to bring the Snappit nature identification app along to scan local species.

The nature-park association was founded in 1975 and took on landscape-management responsibilities in 1992. Much of the scenery owes its character to people as well as geology: the Eschenbach ponds were created for fish farming centuries ago. Part of the Rußweiher area became a nature reserve in 1951, with an extension in 1989. In the Doost, erosion exposed the granite blocks where they lay; the stream did not carry these huge rocks down from a distant mountain.

What to do here

Pick the walk that suits the youngest pair of legs. The Walderlebnispfad Holzweg is a 3.9 km circuit near the B470 at Eschenbach, with only 7 m of ascent. Allow time to play rather than treating its published walking time as a deadline. The Naturerlebnis Rußweihergebiet walking circuit starts at Parkplatz Obersee: 6.6 km and 18 m of ascent, with viewing platforms around the pond landscape. It is a different route from the 5.1 km children's cycling tour starting at the Kleiner Rußweiher outdoor pool.

For a stream-valley walk, follow Wanderweg 1 from Leuchtenberg through the Lerautal and back via Burgmühle. The circuit is approximately 5 km, with a descent from the village and a climb back. The protected valley section itself is only 1.5 km long; that figure is not the length of the complete outing. For older children who enjoy a longer hike, Durch das Naturschutzgebiet Doost zum Galgen is a 12.3 km circuit from Schnepfenhof with 262 m of ascent. It combines the boulder-filled stream with the hills above Floß.

If the weather turns, make Parkstein your main stop. The Vulkanerlebnis museum has interactive exhibits and an eruption simulation using light and mist. In dry conditions, add the basalt wall and Geopfad outside.

Seasonal info

Check the chosen trail and local notices before setting off, especially after storms or prolonged rain. Parkstein's outdoor paths have no winter maintenance. Its museum uses a reduced winter timetable from 9 November 2026 to 21 March 2027, normally Thursday–Sunday afternoons; holiday exceptions apply. For Eschenbach trips, the road closure towards Grafenwöhr is scheduled until 11 December 2026 and affects BAXI routes 1987, 1989 and 1992. Check the amended service before relying on it.

Accessibility

Parkstein's museum has a lift and accessible toilet, and visitors with mobility needs can park directly outside its entrance. With a pushchair, use the western ascent beside the basalt wall along the Geopfad. For wheelchair access to the hill paths, ask the museum separately. Before choosing a pond or woodland circuit, ask about the precise approach, surfaces and any steps; a low total ascent alone does not make a route step-free. Choose sturdy footwear for the stream-valley walks.

Don't miss

Walks and routes

Walderlebnispfad Holzweg

Follow the signed circuit through the woodland activity stations. The published 65 minutes is walking time, before children stop to play.

Ask Eschenbach about current path and activity-station access if travelling with a wheelchair or pushchair.

Walderlebnispfad Holzweg

Naturerlebnis Rußweihergebiet

Walk the marked pond circuit and pause at the viewing platforms. The 6.6 km covers this complete walking route; it is not the 5.1 km cycling circuit from the outdoor pool.

Ask about steps and approach width at the particular viewing platform you plan to use.

Parkplatz Obersee, Eschenbach.

Naturerlebnis Rußweihergebiet

Wanderweg 1 – Lerautal

The approximate 5 km loop descends to the Lerautal, passes the Wolfsloh area and returns via Burgmühle. Use route 1, rather than the longer Leuchtenberger Rundwanderweg or a full Goldsteig stage.

Do not plan this as a step-free circuit. Ask the tourist office for a suitable shorter alternative if uneven ground or climbing is a difficulty.

Leuchtenberg; follow the local Wanderweg 1 signs and official map.

Wanderweg 1 – Lerautal

Durch das Naturschutzgebiet Doost zum Galgen

This longer circuit continues through the Doost and via Wilchenreuth and Theisseil onto the heights towards the former Galgen execution site. It is a substantial walk beyond the small reserve.

Choose it for walkers comfortable with a longer, uneven outing, rather than as a pushchair route.

A relaxed Eschenbach half-day

Choose Holzweg when children want to move and play, or the Rußweiher walking circuit when they are happy to pause and watch. Start with one route, bring a picnic and decide afterwards whether anyone wants another short stop.

Parkstein in changeable weather

Begin at the basalt-wall car park at the end of Richard-Strauß-Straße. Look at the columns, then visit the museum in Schlossgasse 5. Keep the summit walk for dry, ice-free conditions; visitors who need step-free indoor access can go straight to the museum entrance.

Things to try

Watch what a bird does

At a Rußweiher platform, choose one bird and follow it for a minute. Is it swimming, diving, resting or flying? A simple behaviour sketch is useful even when the bird is too far away for a phone photograph.

Two very different rocks

Compare the rounded granite in the Doost or Lerautal with Parkstein's angular basalt columns. Draw their outlines from the path, then use the geology panels to investigate how each shape formed.

The indoor displays provide the geology part of the day when walking conditions are poor. Check the museum's opening calendar first, especially in winter and on public holidays.

Wildlife and habitats

Start with the gulls at Rußweiher: their calls and activity over the water are easier to follow than a distant bird of prey. Watch from the viewing platforms and let children describe the behaviour before trying to take a photograph.

At Rußweiher, scan the water with binoculars for black-necked grebes. Breeding adults have red eyes and golden tufts beside the head; plumage becomes much plainer outside the breeding season.

An osprey over Rußweiher is a lucky encounter. Look for the pale underside and dark eye stripe, then watch from a distance. The park also links to a nest camera; use that for close views rather than moving towards a nest.

A warm, wet night can bring fire salamanders onto woodland paths around Kohlberg early in the morning. You still need luck. Watch your footing, keep hands off and photograph any animal where it is; never turn logs or enter springs to search.

Arnica flowers in June and July, with yellow-orange flowerheads above a low leaf rosette. It is a patchy meadow plant, so do not expect it beside every trail. Photograph from an existing path and leave the flowers unpicked.

Look for broad, dark-spotted leaves beneath a flower spike in a sunny wet meadow. May is the main flowering month. Enjoy any plants visible from a path without stepping into the meadow; a good photograph can include their wetland setting.

Keep to the public marked paths and viewing structures, and obey local closures. Leave plants, deadwood and rocks in place. Keep children beside you at the water and watch birds without feeding them or approaching nests.

Stories and discoveries

The Rußweiher landscape began as a place to raise fish. Some former ponds have gradually filled in and become woodland.

Around Kohlberg, the nature park improves stream structure and woodland habitat to help fire salamanders. The work protects the conditions their larvae need, as well as the adults' forest home.

When to visit

For spring birdwatching, bring warm layers for standing still beside the ponds. June and July suit an interest in arnica. After heavy rain, prioritise firm routes or the museum over wet rock; in winter, keep Parkstein's unmaintained hill paths out of an ice-day plan.

Getting there and practical advice

Use village services before beginning the woodland and pond walks. At Parkstein, an accessible public toilet is also available at the basalt-wall car park. Museums, refreshment stops and any seasonal swimming visit need their own opening-time check.

For BAXI reservations and advice, use 09602 637 9797 or the official booking site. Confirm the exact drop-off and your return journey; the service only calls at booked stops. Around Eschenbach, use the amended timetable during the Grafenwöhr roadworks.

Match the whole outing to your needs: arrival vehicle, route surface, viewing-platform approach and toilet access. Ask the relevant tourist office about the precise outdoor route. At Parkstein, request advice from the museum if you want to combine its accessible interior with the hill paths.

Good to know before you go

Start in the right place

Use Parkplatz Obersee for the 6.6 km Rußweiher walking circuit, not the outdoor-pool start of the shorter cycling tour.

Book the return journey

BAXI runs on request. Reserve both directions and check each trip's booking deadline, usually about an hour beforehand.

Bring your own picnic

Carry water and food for the walks. Arrange a café or restaurant stop separately rather than counting on one halfway round.

Watch from the path

Stay on marked routes and use the pond platforms. Give nesting birds space; never approach nests for a closer photograph.

Keep little feet nearby

Supervise children beside ponds and streams. Wet rock can be slippery even on a warm day.

Save the route

Download the official map before leaving. Several named walks visit the same valley but start in different places.

Pack for a patient pause

Binoculars and a small sketchbook can turn a quiet pond stop into the best part of the walk.

Frequently asked questions

Plan around individual villages and trailheads. Doost and Lerautal are freely accessible; Parkstein's outdoor geology sights are also free, while the museum charges admission. Opening arrangements for museums, pools and other attractions are separate.
For Parkstein, travel by rail to Weiden and check the onward bus connection before booking your day. Rural outings may use the BAXI demand-responsive service. It accepts the Deutschlandticket, but bicycles and e-scooters are not carried. Discuss a wheelchair or pushchair when booking because the vehicle may be unsuitable.
The Rußweiher waterbirds are the clearest focus for a wildlife outing. An osprey sighting is a bonus. Fire salamanders around Kohlberg are much harder to find and should be left undisturbed. Stories, animal-shaped trail symbols and play equipment do not indicate a live-animal collection.
Choose one main walk and leave room for stops. The Eschenbach trails work as separate half-day choices; Parkstein makes another compact outing. Save Lerautal or the longer Doost hike for a different day if you want time to enjoy them.
