Alpe Veglia and Alpe Devero Nature Park

Above the Ossola valleys, larch woods give way to open grazing land, glacial rock and high passes.

About

Above the Ossola valleys, larch woods give way to open grazing land, glacial rock and high passes. This is a lived-in mountain landscape: hay meadows, stone hamlets and summer dairies sit alongside wetlands and wildlife habitat. Devero is the more flexible introduction, especially if your group wants different walking distances. Veglia rewards the approach with a broad basin that feels separated from the roads below. Neither is a place to judge a walk solely by the attractive lake at its destination. Take the ultimate field guide with you: use the Snappit app to identify birds, plants, and animals on your trip.

Veglia became a protected park in 1978 and Devero in 1990; the two were united in 1995. Glaciers shaped their basins, but people helped make the open landscapes visitors see today. At Veglia, archaeological discoveries near Cianciavero record a much older human presence: a temporary Mesolithic hunters’ camp, dated to around the middle of the eighth millennium BCE.

What to do here

Start with a basin rather than a checklist. At Devero, walk the plain, continue towards Crampiolo, or commit to the full Codelago circuit. At Veglia, count the uphill approach before adding the basin loop. The high route towards Pianboglio and Bocchetta d’Arbola belongs to a longer, properly equipped mountain day.

Seasonal info

Veglia’s normal approach is exposed to winter avalanches and is not an ordinary winter visitor route. Devero has winter activity, but that does not make its summer lake circuits or high passes winter walks. Check snow conditions and the current route before setting out.

Accessibility

The Devero plain is the first option to investigate for reduced mobility. Its purpose-designed circuit follows compacted earth, but the parking approach, current surface and accessible toilets need individual confirmation. A low elevation gain is not an assurance that an entire visit is step-free.

Walks and routes

Devero: the gentle circuit of the plain

The Sentiero per tutti circles the plain via Ai Ponti, Pedemonte, Alsone, Giavina and Cantone. The park publishes 2.5 km, just 10 m of ascent and 40 minutes of walking. Give yourself longer for the interpretation stops and meadow views. This is a visit to the adjoining area, with the mountains of the park around you.

Designed with motor and sensory accessibility in mind, on compacted-earth tracks. Confirm the present surface, parking transfer and assistance needs with the park; historic multimedia equipment should not be assumed available.

Devero: the gentle circuit of the plain

Devero: the full Codelago circuit

Follow the linked VisitOssola route from the parking area through Cantone and Crampiolo, with its Lago delle Streghe detour, then around Lago di Devero, also called Codelago. Return via Crampiolo and either Corte d’Ardui or the track. This particular variant is 13 km with 319 m of ascent and a published walking time of 3 hours 35 minutes. Allow a full day with pauses. Devero and Crampiolo are adjoining-area sections before the lake-side park landscape.

A mountain footpath circuit, not a pushchair or wheelchair outing. The western shore between Larecchio and the far end includes exposed ground with a safety cable. Confidence on narrow paths matters more than the modest total ascent.

Devero: the full Codelago circuit

Ponte Campo to Alpe Veglia

Reach Ponte Campo via Varzo and San Domenico, then walk the gated access track uphill into the basin. The local consortium gives roughly 400 m of ascent and 1 hour 30 minutes for the climb. Those figures are one-way, before any walk around Veglia. The track is used by authorized vehicles; ordinary visitors cannot drive up it.

A sustained climb on a mountain access track. Do not confuse the broad basin above with an easy arrival or an independently accessible route.

Ponte Campo to Alpe Veglia

Veglia: villages and Lago delle Streghe

Once in the basin, the VisitOssola circuit runs from Porteia to Cornù, past the lime kiln, then through Ponte and Aione to Lago delle Streghe, returning by Cianciavero. The published loop is 5.3 km, 185 m of ascent and 1 hour 30 minutes, following F10, F10b and F30. It is a satisfying way to see how hamlets, grazing land and water fit together without aiming for a summit.

The circuit is described as easy hiking, but it still uses paths and requires mountain footwear. Its figures exclude the uphill approach from Ponte Campo and the return descent.

Beyond Codelago: Pianboglio and the Arbola crossing

The historic Via Arbola continues past Codelago to Lago di Pianboglio, then climbs to Bocchetta d’Arbola before descending into Switzerland towards Binn. It gives experienced walkers a different scale of landscape: the busy lower approaches fall behind and the journey becomes a high pass crossing. The regional stage from Devero all the way to Binn is 21.04 km, with 778 m of ascent, 1,008 m of descent and seven hours’ published walking time. These are one-way stage figures, not a return walk to Pianboglio.

For fit, equipped mountain walkers with transport or overnight arrangements at the far end. The route crosses exposed lake-side terrain and reaches 2,409 m. Turning back at Pianboglio is a separate plan requiring its own time calculation.

Beyond Codelago: Pianboglio and the Arbola crossing

An unhurried first day at Devero

Begin with the plain and decide how far to go while everyone is still fresh. Crampiolo makes a natural next stop for its stone buildings and, when open, food or dairy products. If conditions and energy allow, continue to the near end of Codelago, then return on the signed approach. There is no need to turn a pleasant village-and-lake day into the entire shore circuit. Keep the official route page and a proper map with you.

A full Veglia day, or a booked overnight

Start early enough to enjoy the climb instead of racing it. After reaching the basin, choose the village loop and leave time to sit before descending. An overnight stay makes a slower second morning possible, but book first and obtain a clear confirmation: arriving at a seasonal refuge is not the same as having a bed.

Things to try

Mountain biking has a specific permitted route

Do not assume every hiking path is open to bikes. The regional guide identifies Grande Est di Devero as the permitted trail itinerary under the park regulation, alongside the vehicle-capable roads allowed by the rules. It is an expert ride with rough, steep and exposed sections, including places to push or carry the bike. Use the current Grande Est description, give walkers priority and check temporary restrictions.

Photography and a quiet wildlife watch

A lake reflection, the edge of a larch wood or the relationship between stone roofs and grazing land can make a stronger photograph than a hurried summit shot. Stay on durable paths, avoid trampling wet ground for a viewpoint and let animals keep their distance. Sightings are a possibility, never a scheduled part of the day.

Make a smaller day of it

In settled light rain, an appropriately equipped short visit around the Devero settlement may suit better than a lake circuit. In thunderstorms or severe weather, postpone the mountain walk. If the Museo dell’Alpeggio is open, it can add context to a short visit; otherwise plan a lower-valley day rather than relying on a closed seasonal building for shelter.

Wildlife and habitats

Alpine ibex

Ibex returned to Veglia–Devero from nearby Swiss colonies after earlier releases failed to establish a lasting population. Their hooves are adapted to grip rock. Scan distant slopes with binoculars and let the animals choose their distance.

Chamois

Chamois share these mountains with ibex. Finding an animal against broken rock can take patience, so stop to scan rather than expecting every walk to deliver a close encounter. Never follow one uphill.

Alpine marmot

Marmots are another of the park’s mountain residents. Watch patiently from the path and do not feed them, approach burrows or use calls to draw them closer.

European larch

Larch is the defining tree of these open high woods. Its seasonal colour and the pasture beneath it tell a story of mountain ecology and long pastoral use.

Rock ptarmigan

Living above the treeline, rock ptarmigan change from winter white to mottled brown and grey plumage. The Devero sector has been part of long-term research into their habitat. Avoid disturbance, especially in snow or the breeding season; this is a conservation interest rather than a sighting target.

Stories and discoveries

Woodland made by grazing

Veglia’s larch woods are partly a pastoral inheritance. Generations of herders favoured the light, open canopy over denser evergreen woodland, keeping grass available beneath the trees. Some veteran larches are estimated to be centuries old. The golden autumn colour belongs to a conifer that sheds its needles, rather than a sign that the woodland is dying.

A lake with two histories

Codelago occupies an older natural lake basin that was enlarged for hydroelectric power. The first dam works date to 1908–1912, followed by further raising in the 1920s. The visible dams belong to the landscape’s working history; this is not an untouched shoreline.

When to visit

Snow, storms and autumn daylight

Use the Arpa Piemonte avalanche bulletin when snow is present, alongside the mountain weather forecast and local advice. A forecast for the valley town is not a high-pass forecast. Leave the exposed shore or pass for another day if conditions are doubtful, and remember that an absence of a closure announcement is not a safety assessment.

Getting there and practical advice

Refuges, meals and communications

Rifugio Città di Arona is a seasonal base in Veglia. Its owner’s notice of 15 June 2026 reported no fixed or mobile coverage at the refuge and across the alpe, directing bookings to [email protected] and warning that replies could take at least 24 hours. Confirm current opening and communications before travel. At Devero, Rifugio Castiglioni welcomes booking enquiries; ask directly about beds and meal service for your date. Carry provisions even if you intend to eat indoors.

Do not count on the Isola campsite

The official tourism listing marks Campeggio Isola at Veglia temporarily closed. The park’s annual report records serious damage from the flood of 29 June 2024. Do not arrive expecting a pitch or use general accommodation listings as evidence of reopening; confirm directly with the park before making camping plans.

Small practical stops at Devero

The Museo dell’Alpeggio occupies the former cableway station at Devero and is a useful seasonal introduction to pastoral life. Ask the park about its opening before relying on it. Published route information lists fountains at Devero, Cantone and Crampiolo, but carry water and check local drinking-water notices rather than treating every flow as potable.

Getting to the two road ends

For Devero, approach through Baceno and Goglio to the paid parking below the settlement. Check the municipal parking information for the applicable tariff. For Veglia, travel via Varzo and San Domenico to Ponte Campo, where the walk begins. Do not set a navigation app to the high basin and expect a public driving route.

Devero by public transport

Use Domodossola as the rail gateway, then the Domodossola–Cascata del Toce bus to Baceno and the reservation-based Prontobus to Devero. VisitBaceno links the winter 2026–27 timetable, valid 14 September 2026–13 June 2027, and gives +39 353 4711605 for enquiries. The regional route guidance asks for booking by the previous day. Arrange both directions and check connections before choosing your walk.

Autumn 2026 disruption on the Varzo rail approach

A provincial notice lists four BLS train services replaced by buses between Domodossola and Iselle from 5 October to 27 November 2026, with stops at Varzo and Crevoladossola. This is not a statement that every train is cancelled. Replacement buses do not carry bicycles; passengers needing accessible travel must arrange assistance with the operator. Check the dated disruption notice and your exact journey.

Ask about the whole journey

Before a reduced-mobility visit, confirm the connection from the parking area to the plain, surface condition after rain, toilet access and any equipment or assistance you need. The designed Devero circuit is a promising starting point for that conversation. Neither Veglia’s approach nor the full Codelago circuit should be presented as independently wheelchair-accessible.

Dogs and other pets must be restrained. From 1 December to 31 May they are prohibited inside the statutory Veglia–Devero park, except on the H00 road from Crampiolo to the Codelago dam. Check the separate adjoining-area rules for your whole route.

Swimming, diving and boating are prohibited in the park’s waters. Recreational drone flights are prohibited; the regulation allows specific technical or professional derogations.

Camping is generally prohibited. A narrow overnight-bivouac tolerance applies above 2,000 m for one night, erected after 20:30 and removed before 06:00; fires are prohibited. The designated Isola campsite is currently listed as closed.

Leave wild plants, rocks and minerals in place. Follow marked paths and current posted restrictions. The complete park regulation sets out exceptions and specialist activities.

Good to know before you go

Carry an offline map, waterproofs, warm layers, food and enough drinking water; do not depend on a hut being open.

Set a turnaround time before leaving. A missed last bus is a real problem at these road ends.

Keep to established paths around bogs and wet meadows, and leave grazing animals room to pass.

Use binoculars rather than approaching wildlife or walking towards calls.

Frequently asked questions

Treat them as separate visits. They have different road approaches, and the walking connection crosses high mountain terrain. Driving back through the valleys also takes time. Choose one basin if you have a single day.
Only for children already comfortable with a substantial mountain walk and exposed ground. For an easier day, stop at Crampiolo or the near end of Codelago and return without committing to the far shore.
Yes. The Veglia basin circuit and the Devero–Crampiolo area each have a Lago delle Streghe. Check which valley your route description and map refer to.
Carry an offline plan and a little cash. In particular, check the dated Veglia communications notice in the refuge section before relying on a phone call to book or obtain help.
