Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park

Come to Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park for a day that connects grazing animals, open meadows and the wooded hills around them.

About

Come to Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park for a day that connects grazing animals, open meadows and the wooded hills around them. A welcoming first stop is the ship-shaped Kultur-Arche beside Frankenau’s Kellerwaldhalle. Inside, children can explore why old livestock breeds matter; outside, the surrounding pasture landscape puts that story into practice.

The nature park covers 595 km², including villages, farmland and the separately managed Kellerwald-Edersee National Park in its northern part. The national park’s Quernst and Hagenstein walks have their own guide. Here, give your attention to the wider countryside: the Arche-Region around Frankenau, the Hoher Keller in the south and the Affolderner See near Hemfurth. Choose one area for an unhurried day rather than trying to fit them all in.

Around Frankenau, sheep, goats, horses and cattle help maintain open grassland. Different grazing habits create different conditions for plants, so watching a field becomes a lesson in how farming can support conservation. Animals move between pastures; a particular breed may be elsewhere on the day you visit.

Farther south, Wüstegarten rises to 675 m. Its wooded slopes lead to a rocky ridge and a small moor below the summit. The Affolderner See offers another pace altogether: stop on the public lakeside path, lift your binoculars and let the waterbirds come into focus. Explore the grounds like a pro—download the Snappit app to instantly identify animals and plants.

The nature park was founded in 2001. Its work includes maintaining walking routes and caring for landscapes shaped by people. Frankenau became an Arche-Region in 2014, linking rare livestock breeds with grassland conservation. In the Hoher Keller, restoration has reopened parts of the quartzite ridge and improved streams and wet woodland, while the moor path lets visitors see this sensitive landscape from a defined route.

What to do here

For a manageable family walk, follow the 4.29 km Arche-Erlebnispfad Mittelberg from Wolfskaute, with 57 m of ascent and a return to the same car park. In Densberg, choose between two very different loops: Kellerhute Rundweg 1 covers 6.67 km and 123 m of ascent along lower woodland slopes; Rundweg 2 climbs to Wüstegarten over 6.99 km with 320 m of ascent and a steep path. The roughly 800 m Moor-Erlebnispfad is a separate summit-area detour, with connecting walking to allow for. At Affolderner See, try a quiet birdwatching stop from the public path beside the railway instead of adding another long hike.

Seasonal info

Before a Wüstegarten outing, check tower access and weather-radar construction notices. The recommended approach during the works is from Kellerhute in Densberg; construction traffic affects the Haddenberg side. Follow forestry closures around damaged beech trees. Avoid woodland in strong wind, heavy rain or snowfall. Kultur-Arche has shorter opening hours from November to March.

Accessibility

Kultur-Arche can be visited with a wheelchair or pushchair. Ask the nature park about the approach and toilet arrangements you need. Check the outdoor Mittelberg circuit separately. The Wüstegarten summit route has a steep path and is unsuitable for an ordinary pushchair or independent wheelchair outing. Kellerhute Rundweg 1 is mostly gravel and less hilly; confirm its slopes and current surface conditions before bringing wheels.

Walks and routes

Arche-Erlebnispfad Mittelberg

Begin and end at Wanderparkplatz Wolfskaute beside Kellerwaldhalle in Frankenau. Visit Kultur-Arche at the start, then follow the Mittelberg circuit through the grazing landscape. The bus-stop approach is additional to the 4.29 km loop.

The exhibition is accessible with wheels; confirm the outdoor circuit separately if you need a pushchair or wheelchair route.

Arche-Erlebnispfad Mittelberg

Kellerhute Rundweg 1: lower slopes and Gilsatal views

From Wanderparkplatz Kellerhute in Densberg, follow route 1 along the forest edge towards Schönstein, then climb into the woods and return along the slope to Kellerhute. This circuit does not reach Wüstegarten’s summit.

Less demanding than route 2. Check the slopes and gravel conditions with the park before bringing a wheelchair or pushchair.

Kellerhute Rundweg 1: lower slopes and Gilsatal views

Kellerhute Rundweg 2: Wüstegarten summit

Follow route 2 from Wanderparkplatz Kellerhute up to Wüstegarten and back to the same start. Look for the Heidelburg ringwall along the route. The moor path and the Mausefalle/Exhelmersteine rocks are extra detours, outside this base-loop distance.

A hiking option for sure-footed walkers. The short length of the separate moor trail does not remove the uphill approach.

Kellerhute Rundweg 2: Wüstegarten summit

A relaxed Frankenau half-day

Begin inside Kultur-Arche, walk Mittelberg with a snack break, then return to the same car park. If the weather turns, shorten the walk and retrace your steps rather than looking for an unmarked shortcut through grazing land.

Things to try

Compare two grazing patches

From the Mittelberg path, choose a short-grazed patch and a taller one. What differences can you see? Back at Kultur-Arche, try the steering-wheel display to explore how land use changes the variety of life.

A still ten minutes by the lake

Use the public path beside the railway at Affolderner See for a quiet pause. Count different kinds of birds rather than chasing a large total. Keep the path clear for other walkers and cyclists.

A short indoor visit in Frankenau

Kultur-Arche offers hands-on things to explore under cover. It is a single-room exhibition, so plan it as a short visit or a pause between showers. In severe weather, postpone the woodland climb.

Wildlife and habitats

Look for cattle from the public Arche paths and compare their grazing with nearby sheep or goats. These are domestic herds; record them as animals under human care and use a sign or guide to identify the breed.

Beech trees give you a patient subject on the Hoher Keller walks even when animals remain hidden. Photograph a trunk, fallen leaf and the surrounding woodland without moving wood or entering a closed stand.

Scan the groups on Affolderner See from the public path. This lake is used for moulting as well as resting, so keep well back even if birds seem reluctant to move.

Include goldeneyes in a winter binocular search across Affolderner See. They may be distant: a careful view or cropped photograph is better than leaving the path for a closer angle.

Also known as a goosander, this is a rewarding possibility on a cold-season visit to Affolderner See. Watch open water patiently and let a field guide help separate it from other diving birds.

Look across the water for a grebe between dives. Affolderner See supports visiting birds, but do not plan on seeing nests or chicks; keep any encounter at a comfortable distance.

Treat a salamander encounter as a chance event. Stay on the path, do not handle it and clean footwear carefully; the local Bsal infection risk makes hygiene especially important here.

Stories and discoveries

A moor near a hilltop

The moor below Wüstegarten is part of a landscape of springs, wet woodland and rock. Its boardwalk makes the wet ground visible without trampling it; stay on the constructed route even when surrounding ground looks dry.

When to visit

In warmer months, combine pasture watching with Kultur-Arche. In autumn, leave enough daylight for the return down Wüstegarten. In winter, swap a long hill walk for a shorter Affolderner See visit and bring warm layers for standing still.

Getting there and practical advice

Kultur-Arche is a small free exhibition beside Kellerwaldhalle, with parking nearby. Check its opening hours before travelling; winter days are shorter. Arrange any essential toilet stop before the forest walks, and carry your own drinks and food.

Plan to the named walk start rather than the nature park office in Bad Wildungen. For public transport, check both directions in NVV before leaving. An AST normally needs booking at least 30 minutes ahead; discuss a pushchair, wheelchair or child-seat requirement when booking, as suitable vehicles and longer notice may be needed.

For a low-walking visit, make Kultur-Arche the main destination. Before adding countryside walking, ask about surfaces, slopes and the specific facilities your family needs. At Wüstegarten, plan the hill walk independently of whether a tower platform is open.

Good to know before you go

Choose the right start

Use Wolfskaute beside Frankenau’s Kellerwaldhalle for Mittelberg, or Wanderparkplatz Kellerhute in Densberg for the southern loops.

Book the return journey

Check NVV for Frankenau Sparkasse or Kindergarten, or Jesberg-Densberg. Some connections use a pre-booked AnrufSammelTaxi; add the walk from the stop to the trailhead.

Protect salamanders

The amphibian-killing fungus Bsal occurs in the nature park. Remove mud from boots and wheels before and after walking, follow disinfection advice and never touch amphibians.

Respect the grazing animals

Stay on the route, keep dogs on a lead, leave gates as you find them and do not feed livestock.

Bring a picnic

Carry water, snacks and a downloaded route map. Mobile reception can be patchy, and a forest car park is not a reliable refreshment or toilet stop.

Watch without approaching

Use binoculars at Affolderner See, keep behind existing bankside cover and leave the island-like old dam and southern water area undisturbed.

Frequently asked questions

Start with Kultur-Arche and judge how much walking your family wants afterwards. Mittelberg is the shortest full circuit here at 4.29 km. You can also make a short out-and-back along its beginning and return the same way; that is a shortened visit, not a separate marked loop.
Kultur-Arche is free to enter, and the nature park’s hiking car parks are generally free. Guided walks and other attractions have their own arrangements. Check the relevant provider before adding one to your day.
The Arche-Region’s grazing livestock are domestic animals under human care. Waterbirds at Affolderner See are free-living and come and go. Neither setting guarantees a particular animal or breed will be visible.
