Nebrodi Regional Nature Park

The first surprise is how much water and woodland shape these mountains.

About

The first surprise is how much water and woodland shape these mountains. Rounded ridges and broad valleys give way to the pale, broken skyline of the Rocche del Crasto; higher up, beech forests surround lakes and pastures. Monte Soro reaches 1,847 m, so a warm morning on the coast tells you little about conditions on the ridge. This is also working countryside, with grazing animals and villages woven into the landscape. Give yourself time for one walk and one nearby town rather than trying to connect every highlight by car. Unlock an interactive field guide for this spot: get the Snappit app to identify nature on the go.

The park and its managing authority were established by the decree of 4 August 1993. Its conservation story includes the return of griffon vultures through a reintroduction programme; the park records nesting from 2005. Older paths also tell a human story. Part of the Sentiero delle Sorgenti follows routes used by pastoral communities moving between the mountains and the former Nelson estate. Woodland, grazing and village life belong to the same landscape.

What to do here

Start with the kind of day you want. For woodland and lake scenery, use the official Monte Soro–Maulazzo–Biviere itinerary to plan a manageable section. For a gentler forest outing, ask about the educational loop at Mangalaviti. For birds and striking rock scenery, base yourself around Alcara li Fusi and arrange a visit to the Area del Grifone. Stronger walkers staying on the southern side can consider the full Sentiero delle Sorgenti from Maniace. These are separate choices, with different access roads and walking demands.

Seasonal info

Summer still calls for water, sun protection and an early start. Autumn can bring wet leaves, mud and short afternoons; winter and early spring may bring snow or ice to the uplands. Fog can make a broad forest track surprisingly difficult to navigate. Change plans when conditions deteriorate.

Accessibility

For limited walking, begin by asking about the Area del Grifone near Alcara li Fusi, which the park describes as approachable by visitors with disabilities. Confirm the current surface, gradients, drop-off and toilets for your needs. An “easy” woodland loop is not evidence of wheelchair accessibility.

Walks and routes

Monte Soro, Maulazzo and Biviere: choose a section

The official forest-and-lakes itinerary begins from the SS289 at Portella Femmina Morta. At Portella Calacudera, one branch climbs towards Monte Soro and another descends towards Lago Maulazzo. Biviere is a further substantial extension: the park describes about 6 km beyond Maulazzo. That figure is a section distance, not the length of a complete circuit. Decide on a summit walk or a lake-focused walk with local advice; do not casually add every named destination.

Forest tracks and mountain gradients; no verified step-free route. The park does not publish a complete distance or time for this combined itinerary.

Mangalaviti educational loop

The park describes an easy educational circuit within the Mangalaviti woodland, approached from Longi or Galati Mamertino via Portella Gazzana. It is a good first question to ask if you want a quieter, shorter forest outing. Oak woodland gives way to beech, with other trees and streamside vegetation adding variety. The wider Mangalaviti–Serra del Re area also offers longer walking, but the educational loop should not be confused with a summit itinerary.

The published description gives no loop length or walking time. Ask about the current trailhead, gradients and surface, especially for children, pushchairs or mobility aids.

Agrifoglio: uphill to Lago Maulazzo

The Agrifoglio itinerary starts at Fontanazze, reached from Militello Rosmarino, and climbs through changing woodland to Maulazzo. The park publishes 7.5 km, two hours and a medium grade for the described walk. Treat the timing as a reference for the outward route, not a leisurely round trip; arrange your return separately and allow extra time for stops. This is the choice for walkers who want to experience the transition from worked land and oak woods to higher beech forest.

The operator describes a road-surface route, but that is not a wheelchair-accessibility assessment. Sustained uphill walking and the return journey need to suit everyone in your group.

Sentiero delle Sorgenti: a full mountain day

From Piazza San Gabriele in Petrosino, Maniace, the Sentiero delle Sorgenti is approximately 18 km with a published allowance of 7–8 hours including stops. The park grades it medium for walkers with trekking experience and some fitness. Springs, historic pastoral paths, woodland and views towards Etna give it variety, but its length makes it a committed outing. Take enough water rather than relying on the springs, and obtain current directions for the intended variant.

Mixed paved and natural surfaces, mountain terrain and a long day on foot. This is not the lower-effort option; a shorter variant needs its own locally checked plan.

Sentiero delle Sorgenti: a full mountain day

A relaxed two-day introduction

On the first day, choose one locally confirmed walk in the Soro–Maulazzo sector, keeping the rest of the day for the approach and Cesarò. On the second, change pace around Alcara li Fusi: arrange the griffon visitor area and enjoy the Crasto scenery from permitted places. If forest exploration matters more than birds, substitute Mangalaviti. Leave generous time for transfers and confirm each visit in advance.

Things to try

Choose your base

Cesarò is a useful starting point for planning the high forest-and-lake sector. Longi and Galati Mamertino suit Mangalaviti; Alcara li Fusi suits the Crasto landscape and griffon visitor area. Maniace serves the southern Sentiero delle Sorgenti. Choose accommodation around the area you actually want to explore, because connecting all four makes a fragmented day.

Arrange permission before setting out

Use the park’s excursion authorization page to check the form and submission method. The published lead time is normally seven days. For clarification, the page gives +39 0921 333015 and [email protected]. Ask about your activity, group size, route, vehicle access and any conditions attached to permission. A submitted request is not an approval.

Meet the wildlife indoors

Mistretta’s Museo della Fauna, in Palazzo Loiacono-Portera on Via T. Aversa, presents taxidermy specimens and interpretation of Sicilian habitats and park birdlife. It is a useful bad-weather option if you are already based on that side of the park. Confirm opening, admission and access on +39 0921 381475. Children who enjoy looking closely at animals may appreciate the specimens and habitat displays.

Wildlife and habitats

European beech

Beech is central to the higher woodland at Monte Soro and Mangalaviti. Following a forest route lets you appreciate the canopy and the transition from lower oak woods without needing a summit.

Holly

The park’s routes describe Ilex aquifolium in the woodland understorey. Its glossy evergreen foliage adds a different texture beneath the deciduous trees, particularly when the canopy above has lost its leaves.

Common yew

Yew is one of the park’s notable woodland plants, explicitly included in its protected forest habitats. Enjoy it as part of the woodland community and leave foliage, berries and other plant material untouched.

Eurasian griffon

The park’s reintroduction project established a free-flying griffon population. Use the visitor area and staff advice for responsible watching; conservation facilities and an aviary are separate from birds living freely in the surrounding landscape.

Golden eagle

Golden eagles are confirmed by the park’s 2026 conservation order. Their protection can take priority over a planned walk. Look from permitted public places and never follow a bird towards its nest.

European robin

The park lists robins among the birds of the Agrifoglio route. Pause quietly along the woodland walk and let any bird approach or leave on its own terms.

Red fox

Foxes are documented along the Agrifoglio itinerary. Seeing one is a possibility, not an attraction on a timetable; keep food packed away and never feed or lure wildlife for photographs.

Stories and discoveries

The lakes reward a slower look

Lago Biviere lies at about 1,278 m and is described by the park as roughly 18 hectares. Changing water levels shape distinct vegetation bands around its margin, while the wetland provides habitat and a stopping place for migrating birds. The park also records occasional summer red coloration associated with Euglena sanguinea. Neither the colour nor particular birds should be expected on a chosen date. Watch from the established approach without pushing through the shore vegetation.

The crags tell a different geological story

The Rocche del Crasto contrast sharply with the rounded, wooded mountains. The park describes Mesozoic rock formations and limestone landscapes near Longi, San Marco d’Alunzio and Alcara li Fusi. Its suggested walks enter the strict-protection Zone A. Ask for a currently permitted route rather than making the highest rocks or a bird’s nesting cliff your destination.

When to visit

Spring and autumn

Spring is attractive for the Crasto’s flowering landscapes and bird activity; breeding-season restrictions can affect walking. Autumn is a good time to consider the beech woods, with footwear suitable for wet ground and a conservative daylight plan. Check the local forecast rather than transferring the coast’s weather to a high trail.

Summer and winter

Seek shade and start early during hot periods. Sicily’s 2026 forest-fire campaign runs from 15 May to 31 October; these operational dates are not themselves a blanket park closure. Check current fire warnings and local orders. In wintry conditions, snowy or icy forest roads can change both the walk and the drive; a village or museum visit is a better choice when the uplands are unsuitable.

Getting there and practical advice

Plan supplies in the gateway town

Buy food and water before heading onto mountain tracks, and ask where the last dependable toilets and parking are for your chosen route. The park’s information-centre directory distinguishes museum-style centres, information points and excursion services. Their existence does not guarantee someone will be present at every site or that a mapped forest shelter offers accommodation.

Cesarò’s indoor alternative

Palazzo Zito, Via Bellini 79 in Cesarò, houses park offices and the Museo della Conoscenza delle Tradizioni dei Nebrodi. The park page lists adult admission at €5 for ages 18–64, with concessions, but does not give a clear update date. Check the current price, visiting hours and booking arrangements on +39 095 7732061 before making it the centrepiece of your day.

Getting to the right side of the park

For the Soro and lake sector, the official route uses the SS289 between San Fratello and Cesarò. Mangalaviti is approached through Portella Gazzana from Longi or Galati Mamertino; Maniace is reached from the SS120 side. A road shown on a map is not permission to drive into woodland: confirm the final approach and legal parking before leaving paved roads.

Arriving without a car

Sant’Agata di Militello is a rail gateway identified by Trenitalia. Check trains for your actual date and arrange onward transport to your accommodation and agreed trailhead before booking a walk. Do not rely on finding a park shuttle when you arrive. Agree the pickup point and return time with your provider; the mountain trailhead is a separate journey from the coastal station.

A practical lower-effort option

The park’s Area del Grifone information sheet explicitly welcomes visitors with disabilities and describes access by coach. This makes it a sensible place to enquire about an assisted or limited-walking visit. It is an undated description, not a current access audit: check step-free drop-off, firm surfaces, seating, accessible toilets and the availability of staff or borrowed optics. Coach accessibility does not establish a scheduled public bus service.

Easy does not describe every access need

Mangalaviti’s educational loop is described as easy, but no measured gradient or surface specification was verified. For wheelchair or pushchair users, ask for details of the exact section being offered rather than a general reassurance about the forest. Museums may offer a useful alternative, subject to confirmation of lifts, entrances and toilets.

Good to know before you go

Carry your drinking water; a named spring is not a guarantee of safe water or a reliable flow.

Bring an offline map, a charged phone, boots and a warm waterproof layer.

Leave gates as you find them, give grazing animals space and keep dogs under close control.

Watch birds from public viewing areas without approaching nests, feeding wildlife or using call playback.

Agree your turnaround time and return transport before starting a one-way walk.

Frequently asked questions

The park’s published visitor rules require advance authorization for hiking, mountain biking, horse riding and other permitted excursion activities, normally requested seven days beforehand. Contact the park about your intended route and date; do not assume an informal or solo walk is exempt.
Do not plan on it. The official descriptions include forest tracks but do not establish unrestricted private-car access or suitability for an ordinary rental car. Ask where you may legally drive and park, and calculate the walk from that confirmed point.
Ask first about the Mangalaviti educational loop or a supported visit to the Area del Grifone. Match the plan to the youngest walker and the day’s conditions. The 18 km Sentiero delle Sorgenti is a substantial mountain day, despite its moderate official grade.
Plan by activity and site. Excursion authorization is separate from any museum admission or paid guiding. Confirm charges, arrangements and opening times with the operator of the particular place you intend to visit.
Both are documented in the park, but sightings depend on conditions and chance. Griffons include a free-flying population established through reintroduction; an acclimatization aviary is a separate part of the conservation project. Neither is a reason to enter a closed area.
This guide does not establish permission for swimming, camping or fires. Treat the shores as wildlife habitat and ask the park about the exact activity and location before planning it.
