Optikpark Rathenow

Come to Optikpark Rathenow for a family day of colour, curious reflections and play beside the Havel.

About

Come to Optikpark Rathenow for a family day of colour, curious reflections and play beside the Havel. Start at the Schwedendamm entrance, look over the park plan and let everyone choose one thing they want to investigate. The Karpfenteich makes a useful first destination: pause beside the water, then decide how much garden exploring and playground time your group wants.

The Gartenstrahlen turn the colours of the spectrum into planted beds. Spring bedding gives way to summer flowers, so the same colour can be supplied by quite different plants. Try finding two flowers that look almost the same shade, then compare their shapes without stepping into a bed. At the distorting mirror wall, move slowly and watch what happens to your reflection. Children can make a prediction before each person changes position.

The optical theme continues into the play areas. A climbing crystal takes the form of a prism, while connected towers suggest a microscope, periscope and telescope. Choose equipment for each child’s reach and confidence; the jumping cushion and other play features can easily become the longest stop of the day. There is water close by, so the park’s fencing does not replace supervision.

Leave room for something quieter too. A staffed raft trip follows the adjoining old Havel arm when conditions allow. Watch from your seat or a public path and enjoy whatever appears. Kingfishers, ospreys and beavers are possibilities, but you can have a satisfying visit without seeing any of them. The cultivated flowers are usually a more patient photography subject. Explore the grounds like a pro—download the Snappit app to instantly identify animals and plants.

Rathenow’s optical identity grew from practical invention. Johann Heinrich August Duncker’s lens-grinding machine was patented in 1801 and helped make lenses less expensive to produce. The park carries that story into gardens, play and large optical objects. Its grounds hosted the Brandenburg state garden show in 2006, reopened as Optikpark in 2007 and formed part of the 2015 Federal Garden Show. The Rolf telescope combines lenses and mirrors; its home has been here since 2009.

What to do here

For a shorter visit, follow open park paths from the Schwedendamm entrance to the Karpfenteich, spend time looking at the water and nearby optical features, then retrace your paths to that entrance. For a fuller visit, use the park plan to choose an order for the Gartenstrahlen, mirror wall, Brachymedial-Fernrohr and a play area. Return through the same sequence of paths to Schwedendamm rather than assuming an unfamiliar gate will be open.

These are suggested visits, not marked walking trails, and no measured route length is supplied. The main paths are broadly level and firm; the pond walkway is timber. Play equipment, the sandy Optik-Beach area and boarding a raft have different access requirements. Add a raft ride only after staff confirm today’s operation and where the outing ends.

Seasonal info

The regular 2026 season ran from 6 April to 11 October and has ended. Do not arrive in autumn or winter expecting ordinary daily park admission. Check the official website for the next season or a specific winter event; event access does not mean every attraction is operating. During the 2026 season, raft rides were advertised from 11:00 to 17:00, with changes or cancellations possible because of water level or weather.

Accessibility

The main paths are described as level and firm, with step-free outdoor access and a timber walkway over the Karpfenteich. Wheelchairs, walking aids and handcarts can be reserved against a deposit. Confirm the entrance approach, suitable toilet and any raft-boarding needs directly before travelling. Wheelchair users are told to leave before 18:00 because the later exit is through a turnstile. Arrange your return around that restriction; access to every play feature is not implied.

Walks and routes

Pond and optical details

Start at Schwedendamm, follow open paths to the Karpfenteich and choose a comfortable public viewing position. Make this a slow looking-and-photography visit rather than trying to cover the whole park. Return along your outward paths.

Choose a manageable turning point. The presence of step-free main paths does not establish raft or playground access.

Gardens, optical sights and play

Start at the Schwedendamm gate. Use the plan to arrange visits to the Gartenstrahlen, mirror wall, Rolf telescope and a suitable playground. Keep a note of your outward turns and return through that same path sequence to the starting gate.

Leave time for rest and the complete return. Check each play feature individually; wheelchair users need to be out before 18:00 under the published exit arrangement.

Choose one extra, then leave breathing room

After the garden-and-play visit, decide between minigolf and a raft outing rather than promising both. For the raft, ask staff about departure, waiting, boarding and the return landing before joining. Keep enough time afterwards to reach Schwedendamm and your onward transport.

Things to try

Make a colour collection without picking

Choose a colour before you begin. Photograph it in one flower, one designed object and one reflection if you can find all three. Compare the pictures at a resting place: which looked brightest in real life, and did the camera agree?

Give the mirror a fair test

At the mirror wall, choose one safe standing position and compare two different reflections. Then change your distance. Ask children to describe what changed before explaining anything; you can enjoy the experiment without knowing the technical terms.

Take the optics story indoors

The Optik Industrie Museum is a separate outing in Rathenow’s Kulturzentrum, with its own admission and opening timetable. A lift reaches the museum floor. Check holiday exceptions and arrange any guided or educational activity ahead of time. Add the transfer and return journey separately; the museum is not a shelter inside the park.

Wildlife and habitats

Watch the water margins from a public path or the staffed raft. If a bird appears, pause rather than following it along the bank. Keep the photograph labelled uncertain if you cannot identify it confidently.

Keep an occasional eye on the sky over the Havel as well as the water itself. An osprey is a possible bonus, not a scheduled attraction; do not try to find a nest.

This is a broad beaver-family target. Enjoy any animal you happen to see from a public path or the staffed raft, and leave banks and lodges alone. The costumed park mascots do not count as wildlife observations.

If zinnias are in the summer display, compare two planted colours and photograph a whole flower as well as the surrounding bed. Keep the identification at the zinnia group unless a label supports more detail.

Look for labelled bellflowers within the seasonal planting. A flower photograph plus the label is more useful than guessing a species from colour alone. Stay outside the bed and record the plant as cultivated.

Find petunias in the planting when they are being used that season. Compare the display with a different flower of a similar colour. This target is broad and does not identify a particular variety.

Photograph the planted flowers and leaves together, without picking either. Bedding choices change, so use the signs to decide whether a begonia is actually in front of you; no named cultivar is implied here.

Look for the planting label Studentenblume or Tagetes. This target means the ornamental marigold group used in the beds, not a claim about a particular species. Include the label when you photograph it.

Cultivated colour beds

The flowers are deliberately chosen and replaced to make a seasonal colour display. Photograph them as cultivated plants. Differences between successive visits can be part of the fun, without suggesting that a missing variety has disappeared from the local wild flora.

Water beside a designed garden

The neighbouring Havel arm is a setting for wild animals alongside the designed park. Keep observation to public paths and the staffed raft, and respect signed biotopes. There is no need to approach a nest, lodge or vegetated bank to make a worthwhile nature stop.

Stories and discoveries

A lighthouse with a previous address

The park’s lighthouse once stood at Warnemünde’s harbour entrance, from 1990 to 1997, before coming to Rathenow in 2009. It used lens technology from a Rathenow company. Look at it as part of the city’s optical story; do not assume it is a climbable tower.

A pond with a Berlin connection

The installation over the Karpfenteich refers to the solar-system model of Berlin Alexanderplatz’s World Clock and Rathenow’s role in its history. It gives older children a reason to look at the structure as well as the water.

When to visit

Let the planting set the pace

Spring and summer use different bedding plants. Treat the flower targets as possibilities within the seasonal display, and read the labels rather than hunting for a plant that may have been replaced. In the closed season, plan only around a specifically advertised event and its own opening conditions.

Getting there and practical advice

Picnic first, café details second

Pack a picnic if you want an independent lunch stop. The Parkimbiss offers snacks during its operating season; the Parkcafé is also advertised for private hire, so its name does not guarantee walk-in refreshments. Baby changing is listed at the Parkcafé. Confirm the toilet you need and its opening when you arrive.

Aim for Schwedendamm

Plan a train journey to Rathenow and a current local connection to the stop Optikpark. For driving, use the operator’s visitor-arrival address, Schwedendamm 9, and check the entrance-parking works notice. The street journey from station, stop or parking is outside the visit estimates; no walking distance or audited step-free approach is supplied. Check the return journey before settling into a long play stop.

Agree the exit before exploring

If you use a wheelchair, make the staffed exit arrangement part of your arrival conversation and finish before 18:00. Reserve a loan aid in advance if essential. Ask separately about boarding the raft and reaching the toilet you need; neither follows automatically from the main paths being step-free.

Good to know before you go

Choose the visitor entrance

The operator’s arrival address is Schwedendamm 9, 14712 Rathenow; its office/contact address is Schwedendamm 1.

Check parking before driving

Read the operator’s entrance-area building-work notice and follow the signs on arrival.

Budget for extras

This is a paid park. Raft rides are included when running; minigolf costs extra. Guided visits, workshops and special events can have separate charges.

Pack for water play

Bring spare clothes if the Optik-Beach fountain is part of your plan, and check that it is operating before promising a splash.

Keep lunch simple

Picnics are welcome. Bring water and a snack; check the Parkimbiss opening rather than relying on the Parkcafé as a walk-in café.

Leave bikes outside

Use the entrance bicycle parking. Ordinary pets are not admitted; arrange assistance-dog access with the operator beforehand.

Frequently asked questions

No. Ordinary seasonal admission includes the raft service when it is running. Minigolf has an additional charge, and tours, workshops and special events may need separate payment or booking. Check the current season’s prices before travel.
Plan to see the telescope as a park sight. Ask the operator about any demonstration or observation session before making that the reason for your trip; a look through it is not a guaranteed part of a normal park visit.
Leave plants in place and stay out of signed protected habitats. Use public paths or the staffed raft to enjoy the water. Do not search for nests or beaver lodges, and keep children close to you beside water.
Consider the separate Optik Industrie Museum in Rathenow’s Kulturzentrum. It normally opens Tuesday to Sunday, with holiday exceptions and its own admission charge. Check its visitor page; workshops and guided visits need advance arrangements.
