Naturpark Feldberger Seenlandschaft

Come to the Feldberger Seenlandschaft for clear-water lakes, steep wooded shores and little discoveries at walking pace.

About

Come to the Feldberger Seenlandschaft for clear-water lakes, steep wooded shores and little discoveries at walking pace. Start at the Haus des Gastes in Feldberg for the nature-park exhibition and a map, then choose between the nearby Wiesenpark meadows and a longer outing around Carwitz.

This is a whole landscape of villages, farmland, woods and water, covering about 347 square kilometres. It rewards choosing one corner rather than trying to tick off every lake. In the Wiesenpark, wildflowers grow in meadows maintained by carefully timed mowing. Along Schmaler Luzin, the banks rise sharply above the water; on the Fridolin walk, a hand-operated ferry becomes part of your journey.

For a different day, head to Lüttenhagen and the Lütt Holthus forest museum. Nearby, the Heilige Hallen beech woodland shows what happens when very old trees fall and young trees take their place. Ask the forestry staff about the currently permitted walk or a guided visit. The animals in this guide live wild; the forest museum’s animal displays are preserved specimens. Planning to visit? The last ice age shaped Feldberg’s ridges, hollows and lake basins. Glaciers also brought stones from Scandinavia, later used in local buildings, walls and roads. Heilige Hallen received protection in the nineteenth century; the wider nature park was established in 1997. Hans Fallada lived in Carwitz, and his fictional badger Fridolin now gives a local walking route its name.

What to do here

For a short visit, explore the Wiesenpark on its boardwalks and return the way you came when your group has had enough. For a longer day, Falladas Fridolinwanderung is a published 10.1 km circuit from Carwitz, following Schmaler Luzin to the ferry, crossing to Hullerbusch and returning through woodland and over the Hauptmannsberg ridge. Allow for climbs, natural paths and steps. Confirm the ferry service and the current signed Hullerbusch access before starting: the historical stairway has been undergoing restoration. Without a confirmed crossing, choose a same-shore out-and-back instead.

Seasonal info

The Luzinfähre announces its 2026 winter pause from 26 October. Outside its regular season, arrange any crossing directly; do not assume it will run. Operating days also vary in season, and rain can stop the service. Check current notices and avoid old-tree woodland in strong wind.

Accessibility

The Haus des Gastes has step-free or lift access, an accessible toilet and a baby-changing room; the adjoining Kurpark is also accessible. Confirm opening and your approach with the tourist information. Ask about Wiesenpark’s boardwalk widths, gradients and approach before bringing wheels. The Fridolin loop has hills, steps and ferry access, so it is a poor default choice for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

Walks and routes

Wiesenpark meadow outing

Follow the boardwalks through the meadow habitat, stopping to compare flower shapes and watch insects. Turn back when it suits your group; this suggestion is not a measured marked circuit.

For wheelchair access, ask locally about board widths, gradients, the approach and current condition before setting out.

Wiesenpark meadow outing

Falladas Fridolinwanderung

Start in Carwitz, follow the lakeside towards the Luzinfähre, cross Schmaler Luzin and continue through Hullerbusch and over the Hauptmannsberg back to Carwitz. Follow the official green-dot-on-white waymarks and current local signs.

Not recommended as a wheelchair or pushchair route. Ask the operator separately about any proposed ferry-only visit and its approach.

Falladas Fridolinwanderung

A gentle first half-day

Begin indoors at the Haus des Gastes, choose a few flowers to recognise, then try a short Wiesenpark visit. Keep the adjacent Kurpark as an easier outdoor alternative if the meadow approach does not suit your group.

A walking day from Carwitz

Make the Fridolin circuit the main event, with a picnic and time for the crossing. Confirm the ferry before leaving Carwitz. Add the Fallada museum only if its opening and your remaining energy fit.

Things to try

Make a meadow portrait

Choose one small patch visible from the boardwalk. Count different leaf shapes, flowers and visiting insects, then compare it with the next patch. Leave everything in place.

Follow Fridolin’s landscape

Tell children that Fridolin is a storybook badger, then let them choose the scene for their own woodland story. A real badger sighting is not part of the promise.

Try the forest with your senses

At Lütt Holthus, use the scent and sound displays before going outside. Compare what the museum helped you notice with the sounds and textures visible from the path.

Forest learning under a roof

Lütt Holthus has preserved animal displays and a walk-in fox-den exhibit. Check opening with the forestry office before travelling.

Meet the writer behind Fridolin

The Hans-Fallada-Museum is in Carwitz at Zum Bohnenwerder 2. From November to March its regular opening is on weekends and public holidays, with other visits by arrangement. Recheck holiday closures.

Wildlife and habitats

Look from the Wiesenpark boards for the orchid’s clustered flower spikes when it is flowering. Photograph from the path, even if a better angle seems only one step away.

Ragged-robin is another Wiesenpark flower to put beside the orchid in a photo notebook. Compare its divided petals with the more compact flowers around it, without picking either.

Lady’s smock, also called cuckoo flower, gives you a third meadow plant to look for. Use a close photograph from the boardwalk to compare its flowers later.

Marsh marigold belongs among the Wiesenpark’s wet-ground flowers. Look towards the damper margins from the boards; never test the ground beside them with your feet.

Beech is a rewarding woodland subject even when no animals appear. Compare smooth living trunks, young saplings and decaying wood from a permitted path. Keep clear of unstable trees.

Pause at an open lake view and scan the sky with binoculars. A distant eagle may be the day’s surprise, but do not plan around seeing one or try to find its nest.

Give a lake-watching stop a few quiet minutes. An osprey may be hunting over the water, though a visit can easily pass without one. Keep your observation point on a public path.

The park’s emblem is much easier to find on a sign than in the water. Otters are mostly active at night; treat a wild sighting as a lucky extra and leave secluded banks undisturbed.

Managed wet meadows

Different mowing times help maintain the Wiesenpark’s wildflower communities. Ditches, willow scrub, hedges and trees add smaller habitats around the meadow. Stay on the boards even when the grass looks walkable.

Beech woods and dead wood

Old beech woodland supports life in standing trunks, fallen timber and young growth. The nearby Paradiesgarten is a planted arboretum where trees were introduced for forestry experiments.

Clear lakes and kettle mires

Deep clear-water lakes contrast with small wet hollows. Hullerbusch’s nature trail includes a mire boardwalk; use it to observe the habitat without entering the peatland.

Stories and discoveries

Stones with a long journey

Many local granite boulders travelled here with ice from Scandinavia. Later generations used these fieldstones for walls, buildings and road surfaces: geology is part of the villages as well as the woods.

A changing old forest

Heilige Hallen is not frozen in the shape of a cathedral-like beech grove. Old trees decay, gaps admit light and younger trees grow. Dead wood provides habitat for fungi, insects and cavity-using birds.

Why clear lakes matter

The Luzin lakes are examples of relatively nutrient-poor clear-water lakes. Their wooded shores sit among many smaller waters and peat-filled hollows, giving this landscape much more variety than a single lake view suggests.

When to visit

Keep a land-based alternative

If the ferry is resting or the weather turns, shorten the day to a shore walk that returns the same way. In stormy conditions, choose an indoor visit instead of the beech woods.

Getting there and practical advice

Two useful bases

The Haus des Gastes combines tourist information and the nature-park exhibition. In Lüttenhagen, Lütt Holthus is at Forsthof 2 and charges admission. Check museum opening before making it the centre of a day.

Choose the outing before the stop

Neustrelitz is the rail gateway, with bus 619 continuing towards Feldberg. Look up the connection for your exact day, including the return; do not rely on a general frequency quoted on a tourism page.

Start with the accessible base

The exhibition’s lift and accessible toilet can make Feldberg a practical starting point. Discuss the specific outdoor path, surface and distance you need with staff rather than assuming every lakeside walk shares the Kurpark’s access.

Good to know before you go

Check the ferry first

ask about both the crossing and the current Hullerbusch access.

Bring grippy walking shoes; wet leaves and wooden boards need care.

Pack binoculars, water and a picnic rather than relying on a café being open.

Stay on designated paths in nature reserves and leave flowers, fungi and fallen wood where they are.

Keep dogs on a lead and give feeding or resting wildlife space.

Use designated parking and take all rubbish away.

Leave the SUP at home

the park authority prohibits stand-up paddling on its lakes.

Check the return bus before walking; a route back to your car is not necessarily a route back to your bus stop.

Frequently asked questions

For orientation, use the Haus des Gastes at Strelitzer Straße 42 in Feldberg. The nature park has many access points rather than a single entrance. Budget separately for the ferry, museums and any booked activities, and check their current charges.
Take the train to Neustrelitz and check bus 619 towards Feldberg. Choose your stop for the particular outing and check the last return. Starting a walk in Carwitz needs its own onward-transport plan; reaching Feldberg does not put you at every trailhead.
Not as the published ferry-linked circuit. Do a shorter out-and-back along the same shore, or choose a different signed route. Going around the lake’s northern end would be a separate, longer outing.
Try the nature-park exhibition or Lütt Holthus, with its sound boxes, scent activities and walk-in fox-den display. The Hans-Fallada-Museum in Carwitz is another option; its winter opening is limited, so check before setting out.
