Tre Cime Nature Park

The big decision comes before you lace your boots: which side will you start from, and how will you get back?

About

The big decision comes before you lace your boots: which side will you start from, and how will you get back? The Auronzo approach reaches high ground by a seasonal road; Sesto and Val Campo di Dentro offer walks that begin much lower. Pick one area for the day rather than trying to link them all. German and Italian names often appear together on signs: Dobbiaco is Toblach, Sesto is Sexten, and San Candido is Innichen. Unlock an interactive field guide for this spot: get the Snappit app to identify nature on the go.

Protected since 1981, this mountain landscape also carries the history of early alpinism and the First World War. Fighting reached the Dolomites in 1915, leaving traces around the Tre Cime plateau. The Dobbiaco visitor centre puts the front, climbing and tourism into context. Treat military remains as historic objects: do not move them or enter unassessed tunnels.

What to do here

For the close-up tower panorama, choose the classic circuit from Rifugio Auronzo in suitable summer conditions. For a less demanding outing, follow Val Fiscalina toward Rifugio Fondovalle. Val Campo di Dentro gives you a longer valley approach, while the visitor centre and forest trail at Dobbiaco make an easy introduction before a mountain day.

Seasonal info

Checked on 19 October 2026: the Dobbiaco–Tre Cime shuttle booking page says service will return in summer 2027, with details to follow. Do not plan on a current shuttle departure or reuse the previous season’s timetable. Confirm road access, refuge opening and your exact trail conditions separately before setting out.

Accessibility

Val Fiscalina offers the most useful lower-effort option described here, with a broad unpaved approach to Rifugio Fondovalle. Wheelchair users may need assistance or power assistance. The high circuit is mountain terrain, and a parking concession at Auronzo does not establish an accessible walking route.

Walks and routes

1. The classic high circuit from Rifugio Auronzo

Follow trail 101 past Rifugio Lavaredo to Forcella Lavaredo, where the northern faces come into view. Continue beneath Monte Paterno, then use the signed circuit toward Lange Alpe and the western side of the towers on trail 105 to return. The branch to Rifugio Locatelli/Dreizinnenhütte is a choice to make deliberately, rather than a reason to follow every crowd. The official circuit listing gives 8.8 km, 550 m ascent and four hours of walking; allow longer for pauses and transport. It also suggests roughly an hour from Auronzo to the saddle, a useful shorter out-and-back objective in good conditions. This is a high mountain outing with climbs after descents, not a flat promenade. Snow, poor visibility or storms can make the advertised summer route inappropriate. Official circuit description.

2. Val Fiscalina to Rifugio Fondovalle

Choose this for a gentler day under the mountains. Trail 102 runs from Sesto through the valley to Rifugio Piano Fiscalina and onward to Rifugio Fondovalle/Talschlusshütte. The official outing from Sesto is 12.6 km with 227 m ascent and a published time of 3 hours 19 minutes for the outward and return journey. Starting at the Dolomitenhof bus stop makes it substantially shorter. On the full outing, the described return variant uses trail 1 and includes a narrow forest-and-meadow section. With a buggy or wheelchair, stick to the broad main approach and return the same way rather than assuming the whole loop has the same surface. This valley walk does not reach the close-up Tre Cime panorama; climbing onward into the high mountains changes the scale of the day. Official valley walk.

3. Val Campo di Dentro to Rifugio Tre Scarperi

This is a satisfying choice when you want to walk into the Sesto Dolomites without starting on the busy Auronzo plateau. Begin at the valley entrance between San Candido and Sesto and follow the signed approach to Rifugio Tre Scarperi/Dreischusterhütte, using forest road and woodland paths. The official route listing gives 5.7 km, 385 m ascent and 1 hour 53 minutes to the hut. Those are approach figures, so budget the return separately: allow a relaxed half-day or more from the lower start. A seasonal bus toward Antoniusstein can shorten the approach when it is running; verify it before basing your day on it. The hut is the destination for this outing. Continuing to Locatelli is a separate, much bigger mountain walk, not a small extension. Official Tre Scarperi approach.

4. Dobbiaco’s forest gateway

Start behind the park visitor centre at the Grand Hotel for an outdoor learning visit rather than a summit objective. The forest nature trail links playful interpretation, tree houses and opportunities to explore woodland themes at a child’s pace. Combine it with the indoor exhibition, or keep it as a short independent visit. The province describes the outdoor trail as free to access; this does not guarantee that every play structure is usable in snow, ice or maintenance periods. There is no need to turn this into a mileage target: allow time to stop, play and read. It is a gateway to understanding the park, not evidence that the urban Grand Hotel grounds lie inside the protected mountain boundary. Official forest-trail description.

A good two-day pairing

Give the best forecast day to your chosen mountain walk. On the other day, combine the Dobbiaco visitor centre with its forest trail, or choose the shorter Val Fiscalina approach if your group wants to stay outdoors. Do not feel obliged to do both high and low routes in one day: the main reward of a second day is having time to stop and enough flexibility to change plans.

Things to try

Walk lightly, photograph patiently

The province recommends official marked paths and publishes a dedicated 1:25,000 Tre Cime hiking map. Carry a suitable current map, but still respect signs and local closures. Recreational drone use is generally prohibited in the nature parks. Keep noise down, do not light fires, and avoid collecting plants, minerals or fossils. Ordinary visitors should also leave mushrooms untouched. Designated cycling routes must be checked separately; a broad-looking hiking path is not permission to ride. Park behaviour rules · Official hiking-map information.

An indoor day with a reason to visit

At the Dobbiaco visitor centre, geological interpretation, a landscape model and material on mountain history help explain what you see outdoors. The centre covers both Tre Cime and the eastern part of Fanes-Sennes-Braies. Its discovery area gives younger visitors something to engage with while adults explore the exhibits. Make this the main outing in poor weather, rather than treating it as a quick stop before pushing onto an unsuitable mountain route.

Wildlife and habitats

Watch without pursuing

Treat wildlife as a possibility rather than a checklist. Stay on the path, use binoculars, and avoid approaching animals, following alarm calls or searching for nests. Early or late light can be attractive for photography, but it is never a reason to miss your return or disturb animals. Trees are a rewarding alternative when wildlife stays out of sight.

Stories and discoveries

Read the bands and the rubble

The towers’ horizontal bands belong to the Main Dolomite, set above older formations. Other layers matter just as much to the landscape: clay-rich strata can hold water, helping explain pockets of grass and small lakes among apparently dry rock. Ice shaped the valleys and smoothed parts of the high plateau, while rockfall continues to supply the scree below the cliffs. That makes the landscape easier to read on a walk: the sharp walls, rounded ground and loose aprons record different processes. Look from the trail rather than stepping onto unstable rubble for a closer photograph.

Life between the cliffs

Rock and scree occupy about two thirds of the park, yet the lower woods and high grasslands support very different communities. The wallcreeper, the park’s emblem, searches rock crevices for small prey. Larch meadows at the valley entrances also reflect human work: selective tree cutting, haymaking and grazing helped maintain their open character. These are living habitats and working landscapes, not spare ground for shortcuts or picnic spread-outs.

When to visit

Make the conditions decide

Before a high walk, read the official South Tyrol weather forecast and ask locally about snow, ice, rockfall damage and closures on the exact route. Check the return arrangements again that morning. A warm valley afternoon does not establish safe conditions at Forcella Lavaredo. In winter, use a specifically maintained and locally confirmed valley itinerary; the summer descriptions above are not winter navigation. Choose a lower objective or the museum when the forecast or your group’s pace makes the high circuit a poor fit.

Getting there and practical advice

Visitor centre and mountain refuges

The park visitor centre is at the Grand Hotel, Via Dolomiti 37, Dobbiaco. Its published 2026 season runs from 5 May to 31 October: Tuesday–Saturday, 09:30–12:30 and 14:30–18:00, with last admission at 17:30; admission is free and public-holiday exceptions apply. Check again for your date. Refuges provide possible meal or overnight stops, but each has its own season and booking arrangements. The 2026 notice lists Rifugio Lavaredo closing on 11 October and Auronzo continuing toward the end of October only if weather permits. The Alpine Club lists Tre Scarperi’s summer season to mid-October and a separate winter season without overnight accommodation. Never build an out-of-season walk around an assumed meal, water refill or bed. Visitor centre · Refuge-season notice · Tre Scarperi hut information.

Road access and the separate shuttle

The road from the Misurina/Lago d’Antorno side to Auronzo is a seasonal approach outside the South Tyrol park. The published system requires an online parking reservation and a valid vehicle registration plate. For rental cars, the current instructions allow the plate to be added by 23:59 on the preceding day. Check the live booking calendar, road notice and terms before paying; an advertised summer season is not a same-day opening guarantee. The Dobbiaco shuttle is a separate service, and its live page currently points to summer 2027. Auronzo vehicle-access information · Tre Cime shuttle updates.

Choose the valley stop that matches your walk

Use the südtirolmobil journey planner for the actual travel date. The valley route descriptions identify line 446 for Sesto and the Val Campo di Dentro junction, with seasonal lines 440 toward Val Fiscalina and 449 toward Antoniusstein. Confirm stops, service dates and the last return rather than relying on those numbers alone. A bus to Sesto is not automatically a bus to the far end of Val Fiscalina, and a lower-valley arrival does not put you at the Auronzo trailhead.

A practical lower-effort choice

The Alto Adige per tutti survey describes the approach from Piano Fiscalina/Dolomitenhof parking to Rifugio Fondovalle as broad, unpaved and gently graded, taking about 30 minutes on foot. It notes that wheelchair users need a substantial push, an accompanying helper or powered assistance. The survey records reserved parking bays, an accessible terrace and dining room, and an adapted toilet at the refuge. Confirm current conditions and facility opening directly, especially after rain or in snow. For a shorter view of the famous towers, consider the established Val di Landro viewpoint; a distant viewpoint should not be confused with the high circuit, and no step-free certification is asserted here. Good to know before you go

Choose your return bus or turnaround time before starting, and leave a generous buffer.

Carry drinking water and food even when your route passes a refuge; opening and supplies are seasonal.

Use the official marked paths and a current hiking map. A downloaded route is not evidence that a path is open.

Keep dogs close and on a lead; never let them chase wildlife or enter meadows freely.

Leave flowers, fossils and rocks where they are, and carry out all rubbish, including food scraps.

Take a warm layer, waterproofs and footwear suited to rough ground; valley weather can mislead you about conditions higher up.

Frequently asked questions

No. Parco naturale Tre Cime is a provincial nature park in South Tyrol. The famous peaks sit on the provincial boundary; the classic circuit and its Auronzo road approach extend beyond the park’s South Tyrol territory.
Yes. In suitable conditions, the walk from Rifugio Auronzo to Forcella Lavaredo provides a natural turnaround. A separate lower-altitude option is the Tre Cime viewpoint in Val di Landro. Neither option guarantees clear views: low cloud can hide the mountains.
For vehicle access to the Auronzo parking area, the published system requires online booking with a valid number plate. Seasonal shuttle arrangements are separate. Check the current operator pages before committing to a date; a road or parking booking does not clear a hiking route.
Ordinary overnight tent camping is prohibited in the nature park. The narrow exception for an unforeseen mountaineering bivouac is not permission to plan a camping night. Arrange legitimate accommodation instead.
They are separate mountain objectives. Do not add a tunnel, ladder route or summit because it looks close on the map. Choose an appropriate route with the equipment, experience and local advice it requires.
Use the visitor centre in Dobbiaco during its opening hours, or postpone the high walk. Do not turn a short valley visit into an improvised ascent to escape the cloud. In severe weather, an indoor alternative is preferable to another exposed viewpoint.
