Start by the Botanico and use the numbered plan: kitchen garden 13, medicinal garden 14 and rose garden 15 form a useful first group beside play area 30. Return to the hotel area. If you continue, visit Asian Garden 11, scent garden 7 and the trees around Gartenzimmer 1 before heading towards animal enclosure 27.

About
Come to Finkenrech for a garden day that leaves plenty of room for children to play. Around the Botanico hotel-restaurant, six hectares of planting lead from a rose-shaped rose garden to a bamboo grove, medicinal beds and long perennial borders. Start with the garden plan and choose a few places everyone wants to see; the playground can be a destination in its own right.
The gardens reward small discoveries. Compare the vegetable beds with what is growing at home, pause beside the water in the Asian Garden, or look for unusual trees around the Gartenzimmer. Donkeys, goats and sheep add another reason to stop. If everyone still has energy, the separate Bienenreise trail takes you into the neighbouring woods for bee-themed puzzles and play. Planning to visit? Download the Snappit app to identify the wildlife you spot in real-time.
The district acquired the land in 1929 and first used it as pasture for young cattle. Its garden story continues to evolve: the kitchen garden was redesigned in 2019, incorporating old paving and sandstone from earlier buildings. The grazing project keeps a link with the site’s agricultural past.
What to do here
From the Botanico area, explore the kitchen, medicinal and rose gardens beside the playground, then return towards the hotel. For more garden time, take the public paths through the Asian Garden towards the scent garden, special trees and animal enclosure. Retrace your chosen paths to your starting place. This is a flexible stroll with no fixed distance. The Bienenreise is a separate circuit of about 2 km, mostly on woodland paths; its nine stations make it a longer activity than the distance suggests.
Seasonal info
The grounds are open year-round and normally free. One market weekend in April and one in September require entry tickets, so check the event calendar. The maize maze is currently unavailable; check the play page before making it part of a future visit. Flowers, displays and outdoor play depend on the season and weather.
Accessibility
Use the garden plan’s marked wheelchair-suitable paths and accessible parking spaces. Some Asian Garden paths are uneven and winding, so choose your route carefully. The playground includes a wheelchair swing, wheelchair carousel and roll-under sand table. The mostly flat Bienenreise is described as suitable for outdoor pushchairs; wheelchair users should discuss the trail and their access needs with the venue before setting out.
Don't miss
A rose garden laid out like a long-stemmed rose
Bamboo, gravel, water and planting in the Asian Garden
Medicinal beds and a kitchen garden built with reused materials
Inclusive play equipment and the nearby Bienenreise woodland trail
Walks and routes
From your last stop, retrace the public garden paths to the Botanico area and your original parking place. You can turn back earlier at any point.
Use the paths marked for wheelchair access if needed; smaller garden paths can be uneven. Avoid treating the route through the Asian Garden as a guaranteed step-free shortcut.
Follow any temporary barriers and the market-weekend entry arrangements.
Familienerlebnisweg Bienenreise
Familienerlebnisweg BienenreiseA full family half-day
Walk the Bienenreise, return to its Finkenrech start, then picnic and choose a few gardens or the playground. Allow about 4–5 hours altogether, including activities, breaks and returning to your parking place. This is a family-time suggestion; public-transport approach walks are additional.
Things to try
Make a three-part garden portrait
Choose one flower, one tree and one garden feature to photograph. In the kitchen garden, find a reused building material; beside the Asian Garden, listen for water and bamboo. Finish by choosing everyone’s favourite image.
In light rain, shorten the garden visit and take a restaurant break if the Botanico is open. In severe weather, postpone the outing; the woodland trail is especially unsuitable in strong wind or when trees carry snow or ice.
Wildlife and habitats
The rose garden mixes climbing, historical and other garden roses. Compare colours and flower shapes from the paths; labels are the place to look for individual variety names.
Pause beside the bamboo grove and listen to the leaves moving. Photograph the planted clumps from the path rather than stepping between the stems.
Look for the labelled aloe among the medicinal plants. Its display may change with the season; keep hands off the plants and enjoy the labels as a talking point.
Oleander is one of the scent garden’s named plants. Look for its label among the summer displays and photograph it without picking flowers or leaves.
Find the Amberbaum using the garden plan. In autumn, compare its colour with neighbouring trees and take a picture that includes both its crown and setting.
Use the plan to find the Blauglockenbaum near the Gartenzimmer. Look for its label before photographing it; the tree is worth noticing outside its flowering season too.
The park’s American red oak helps frame the autumn flower display. Look up from the asters to compare the colours in the canopy, without collecting leaves or acorns.
Watch the donkeys quietly from outside the enclosure. The grazing project includes domestic donkeys; organised donkey activities are separate from an ordinary garden visit.
Look for the Valais Blackneck goats in the grazing enclosure. Watch how they move around their space and keep food packed away, even if an animal comes to the fence.
Ouessant and Racka sheep are named on the garden plan. See whether you can spot the different groups from the public paths; leave gates closed and never offer food.
Stories and discoveries
A rose you can walk through
The rose garden’s long-stemmed flower shape is easiest to understand on the plan. Look at it before entering, then see whether you can recognise its parts from the paths.
Getting there and practical advice
The plan marks toilets and accessible facilities at the Botanico building. Check access if you need them outside restaurant hours. The Info-Point is reached from outside the building during Botanico opening hours. There are picnic lawns, bicycle parking and a book-sharing telephone box.
Public transport includes a substantial walk. Dirmingen station is about 3 km away and Dirmingen-Mühlbach bus stop about 2 km away, through the village and on a field track, uphill towards Finkenrech. These approaches are not signposted. The same-way returns make approximately 6 km or 4 km respectively, before any garden walking. Check the route and return service in Saarfahrplan.
For a shorter visit, select a few gardens using the wheelchair-route markings rather than trying every small path. Call +49 6821 97292-0 to discuss slopes, toilet access and any temporary restrictions that matter to your family.

Good to know before you go
Arrival
Use Tholeyer Straße 50, 66571 Eppelborn-Dirmingen. Parking is shown around the Botanico and along the garden edge.
Without a car
Expect an uphill walk: about 3 km each way from Dirmingen station or 2 km each way from Dirmingen-Mühlbach bus stop. Check connections and your walking route before travelling.
Picnic
You may eat on the lawns. Bring water and take your rubbish away; check Botanico opening before relying on a meal there.
Garden care
Stay out of beds and do not pick plants, vegetables or fruit. Keep children close beside the ponds.
Animal watching
Do not feed any animals, including pond fish. Watch grazing animals from the public paths.
Dogs
Keep dogs on a short lead and clean up after them. Dogs, like people, must stay out of the ponds.
Frequently asked questions
- Plan to watch from the paths. Animal encounters and donkey walks are organised activities; check the current programme and booking arrangements rather than assuming you can enter.
- The visit is mainly outdoors. A meal at the Botanico can provide a break when it is open, but it is not an indoor play attraction.
- With keen walkers, try the bee trail first and finish with gardens and play. With younger children or limited time, keep to the gardens and save the woodland circuit for another day.
