Audubon Canyon
Audubon Canyon Ranch, now operating as All Hands Ecology, safeguards a vital natural sanctuary in California.
About
Audubon Canyon Ranch, now operating as All Hands Ecology, safeguards a vital natural sanctuary in California. This extraordinary venue offers a deep connection to diverse ecosystems and a rich array of wildlife. Its flagship Martin Griffin Preserve, nestled on the scenic shores of Bolinas Lagoon, is a haven for birds and other creatures, representing a critical commitment to conservation.
The Martin Griffin Preserve boasts a stunning variety of habitats across its 1,000 acres, including majestic redwood groves, mixed evergreen forests, open hillsides with grasslands and coastal scrub, and freshwater habitats in its canyons. The preserve's frontage along Bolinas Lagoon provides a prime viewing location for over 60 species of waterbirds and shorebirds, such as elegant pelicans, sandpipers, and osprey, alongside resident harbor seals. While the historic heronry, once home to large colonies of Great Egrets and Great Blue Herons, saw the birds relocate in 2013, the preserve remains an invaluable site for observing a wide range of land birds, over twenty-five species of mammals, and various reptiles and amphibians.
Visiting Martin Griffin Preserve is an immersive experience, inviting exploration of its extensive hiking trails and panoramic views. It provides a unique opportunity to witness ongoing conservation efforts, from coastal prairie restoration to wildlife monitoring. Whether you're captivated by the intricate lives of birds, the tranquility of ancient redwoods, or the dynamic interplay of a coastal ecosystem, this preserve offers a memorable journey into the heart of California's natural heritage, fostering a deeper appreciation for environmental stewardship. Don't forget to bring the Snappit nature identification app along to scan local species.
Audubon Canyon Ranch was founded in 1962 with a crucial mission: to prevent the commercial development of Bolinas Lagoon in western Marin County and protect a significant heronry. Dr. L. Martin Griffin, then president of the Marin Chapter of the National Audubon Society, played a pivotal role in these conservation efforts, leading to the purchase of what was formerly a family-run dairy ranch. The preserve was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1968, recognizing its ecological importance. In 2010, the preserve was formally renamed the Martin Griffin Preserve in honor of Dr. Griffin's lifelong dedication to environmental protection. More recently, in September 2025, the overarching organization, Audubon Canyon Ranch, rebranded itself as All Hands Ecology to better reflect its expansive mission beyond a single site and its commitment to diverse, interdependent ecosystems. Despite the name change, the Martin Griffin Preserve continues its legacy of conservation science, education, and land stewardship.
