Como Zoo's origins trace back to 1897 when the city of Saint Paul received a donation of three deer, leading to the creation of a fenced pasture within Como Park. The animal collection steadily grew, and by 1915, the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory was constructed, initially serving as a warm winter home for some animals. The 1930s saw significant development with federally funded Works Progress Administration projects, including the Bear Grottos, Monkey Island, and the Main Zoo Building, which facilitated the acquisition of more exotic animals. The mid-20th century marked a period of notable expansion, with the iconic Sparky the Sea Lion show debuting in 1956 and the introduction of endangered species such as gorillas and Siberian tigers. Throughout the 1980s, major renovations led to improved habitats, including the Large Cats exhibit, the Aquatic Animal Building, and the African Hoof Stock area. Modernizations continued into the 21st century with the opening of the state-of-the-art Polar Bear Odyssey in 2010, the expansive Gorilla Forest in 2013, and the revitalized Como Harbor in 2021, solidifying Como Zoo's reputation as a leader in animal care and conservation.
