About

Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens is a stunning horticultural gem perched on Northern California's rugged coastline. This 47-acre non-profit botanical garden is uniquely positioned between historic Highway 1 and the Pacific Ocean, making it one of the few public gardens in the world that fronts directly on the ocean. Its mild, coastal Mediterranean climate fosters an extraordinary diversity of flora, offering a vibrant display throughout the year.

The gardens boast a remarkable array of plant collections, including a world-renowned Rhododendron Collection with over 1,000 plants representing 124 species and 315 taxa, some rare and endangered. Visitors can marvel at the nationally recognized Heath and Heather Collection, providing year-round color, and the spectacular Dahlia Garden, which features over 625 plants and 150 varieties, peaking in late summer. Other highlights include a diverse Succulent Garden, a vibrant Perennial Garden designed by Gary Ratway, the fragrant Heritage Rose Garden, and the Mae E. Lauer Display House showcasing fuchsias and begonias. Beyond cultivated beds, the gardens also encompass a dense coastal pine forest, fern-covered canyons, and pristine coastal bluffs overlooking the ocean.

A visit to Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens offers more than just beautiful plants; it's an opportunity for a peaceful retreat, a chance to connect with nature, and an engaging learning experience about Northern California's coastal ecosystems. The winding trails lead to breathtaking Pacific views, where the salty spray and coastal winds create a unique sensory experience. The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens were founded in 1961 by Ernest and Betty Schoefer, retired nurserymen with a keen eye for horticulture. The Schoefers spent 16 years developing the 47-acre property as a private enterprise, opening it to the public in 1966. They recognized the ideal conditions of the mild coastal climate and rich soil, particularly for acid-loving plants like rhododendrons. In 1982, a significant portion of the gardens, including 12 acres and an access easement over 5 acres of coastal bluffs, was acquired by the California Coastal Conservancy to ensure its preservation for public use. This land was then leased to the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens Preservation Corporation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established to manage and maintain the gardens. Later, the remaining 35 acres were also acquired, securing the future of this unique coastal botanical garden.
