Prallsville Mills is a living testament to New Jersey's rich industrial past and natural beauty. This historic 10-acre, 10-building complex, nestled along the picturesque Delaware River and the Delaware & Raritan Canal in Stockton, offers a unique blend of history, culture, and scenic landscapes. It serves as a vibrant cultural center, preserving the legacy of an early industrial village while hosting a diverse array of events and providing access to the natural recreational opportunities of the surrounding state park.
The site boasts an impressive collection of meticulously preserved 18th, 19th, and early 20th-century structures, including a 1790 linseed oil mill, an 1877 gristmill, an 1850 sawmill, and a 1900 grain silo. Visitors can explore the intricate architecture, marvel at the massive hewn oak timbers within the central building, and even see original mill components still intact. The historic Miller's House, dating back to 1794, offers a glimpse into colonial life with its unique double front doors and a rare "paneled summer wall" designed for seasonal climate control.
Beyond its architectural marvels, Prallsville Mills is a dynamic hub for cultural and community activities, from art exhibitions and concerts to antique shows and weddings. Its prime location within the Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park makes it an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking to walk, bike, fish, or simply enjoy the serene river views. The history of Prallsville Mills dates back to the early 1700s when a gristmill was first established where the Wickecheoke Creek meets the Delaware River. The site's industrial significance truly flourished when John Prall Jr., a local businessman and American Revolution veteran, purchased the property in 1794. He transformed the modest gristmill into a thriving industrial complex, adding a linseed oil mill and a lumber mill, thereby establishing an "early industrial village" that was crucial to the region's development. Throughout the 19th century, the mills changed hands and continued to adapt, benefiting from major transportation improvements like the Delaware & Raritan Canal (built in the 1830s) and the Belvidere & Delaware Railroad (built in the 1850s), which facilitated the transport of goods. The complex operated until 1969, after which it faced deterioration. To prevent demolition by developers, local preservationist Donald Jones purchased the site in 1969. In 1973, the State of New Jersey acquired the property, incorporating it into the Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park. Since 1976, the non-profit Delaware River Mill Society has managed and restored Prallsville Mills, ensuring its preservation and fostering its use for cultural and educational purposes.
