The Riverside Discovery Center began its journey in the 1950s as the Riverside Zoo, featuring a modest collection of native animals and waterfowl housed in basic enclosures along the North Platte River. Early development was largely fueled by dedicated volunteers and generous donations. Over the decades, the zoo saw significant growth, including the construction of a primate structure in 1976. Facing financial uncertainty in 1985, the City of Scottsbluff stepped in, providing funding in 1986 to hire professional staff, which led to a period of remarkable expansion. Under new leadership, the zoo achieved accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) in 1990. This era brought substantial improvements, including a chimpanzee conservation complex, a new big cat exhibit, a moose habitat, and a veterinary facility built between 1991 and 1993. In 2009, the Riverside Zoological Foundation merged with the Children's University and the Wildlife World Natural History Museum, officially becoming the Riverside Discovery Center. More recent additions include the Heritage Barn and petting zoo (2012-2014) and the Grizzly Brothers exhibit (2020). As of early 2024, tourism sites still describe the zoo as AZA accredited, although a Wikipedia entry from late 2023 noted it was not re-accredited in September 2023. The center continues to evolve with plans for a future children's museum and natural history museum.
Observe a wide variety of animals, explore the beautifully maintained garden spots, and consider purchasing fish food at the gate to feed the geese, swans, and fish. In warmer weather, the splash pad is a must for kids. The Heritage Barn focuses on agriculture and heritage livestock breeds.
In warm weather, the macaws are in the Garden Walk; during cooler months, they move to the Discovery Building. The splash pad operates in the summer. Special events often occur throughout the year, especially around holidays, so checking their social media is recommended.
The Riverside Discovery Center is proud to be fully wheelchair accessible, ensuring a comfortable experience for all visitors.
