The Sawtooth Botanical Garden was founded in 1994 by a dedicated group of local gardeners and environmental enthusiasts, with support from the Global Environmental Project Institute. Initially conceived as the Sawtooth Community Garden Project in 1995, it aimed to showcase sustainable gardening practices and offer community members plots for growing vegetables and flowers on its five-acre site, which was formerly a horse pasture. By 2000, as awareness of unique local gardening opportunities grew, the project evolved and was officially renamed the Sawtooth Botanical Garden, expanding its vision to provide diverse programs and educational resources for the community. A significant addition was the Garden of Infinite Compassion, created in September 2005 to honor the visit of the 14th Dalai Lama, who blessed the garden and its unique Tibetan prayer wheel.
Enjoy self-guided tours, observe a wide range of native and cultivated plants, walk along gentle trails, find peace in contemplative spaces, and photograph the stunning plant life against the mountain backdrop. Check their event calendar for workshops, guided wildflower walks, and seasonal celebrations.
Spring/Summer: Peak bloom season for many flowers and wildflowers, vibrant colors. Events like Wildflower Walks, Discovery Club for kids, and the annual Garden Tour.
Fall: Enjoy autumn foliage and seasonal events like pumpkin chucking.
Winter: While fewer blooms, the greenhouse offers warmth and plants, and the garden hosts unique events like Dark Sky Stargazing Nights and holiday workshops. The Comstock Ditch, a spring-fed creek, flows year-round and does not freeze, providing a wetland wildlife habitat even in winter.
The garden is located along a bike path, making it accessible for cyclists. The trails within the garden are suitable for gentle strolls and beginner hikers. While not explicitly stated as fully wheelchair accessible in all areas, many parts of a botanical garden with "gentle strolls" tend to be accommodating.
Don't miss the tranquil Garden of Infinite Compassion, the diverse Biome Display Gardens (Sagebrush Steppe, Lava Rock, Alpine, Montane, Riparian), Carol's Wildflower Garden, and the unique Greenhouse. The Sawtooth Sandbox is a popular spot for children.
