Naturpark Stechlin-Ruppiner Land

Come to Naturpark Stechlin-Ruppiner Land for lake walks where old beech trees, diving ducks and peatlands give you plenty to investigate together.

About

Come to Naturpark Stechlin-Ruppiner Land for lake walks where old beech trees, diving ducks and peatlands give you plenty to investigate together. Start in Menz if your children enjoy trying things out: the NaturParkHaus introduces the landscape indoors, and Roofensee is close by. Choose Neuglobsow for a shorter circuit of Dagowsee or a full walking day around Großer Stechlinsee. These are separate outings within a nature park covering about 862 square kilometres, so one well-chosen corner makes a better day than trying to see everything.

The landscape changes in small, revealing ways. Around Stechlin, mature beech woods reach the water; near Menz, wet woodland and peatlands interrupt the forest. A lake can gradually become a mire as plants spread and dead material accumulates. The moor trail lets children explore that slow transformation through models and viewing points, without stepping onto fragile ground.

Großer Stechlinsee reaches 69 metres deep and gave its name to Theodor Fontane’s novel Der Stechlin. Its reputation for clear water is part of its story, but the lake has lost its former exceptionally low-nutrient condition. Enjoy the changing colours and reflections without expecting a particular underwater visibility. The woods are equally worth your attention: standing and fallen dead trees provide habitat, and old woodpecker holes can become nesting places for the park’s emblematic common goldeneye.

Make the day about things you can actually notice. Watch ducks disappear underwater and reappear, compare trees on dry and waterlogged ground, or look for beaver-cut wood from the path. Ospreys are a spring-to-early-autumn possibility; otters are much harder to see. The animals described here are wild. The NaturParkHaus uses interactive exhibits to explain their world, rather than promising encounters with live animals. Enhance your adventure: download the Snappit app to identify the local species you encounter.

The nature park was established on 13 June 2001 and enlarged in 2021. The landscape also holds traces of working lives: Neuglobsow was a glassmaking village, while remains near Dietrichsofen recall extracting tar from wood. Around Stechlinsee, the walking route passes the secured former Rheinsberg nuclear-power site and its outlet canal, adding an unexpected industrial chapter to the woodland scenery.

What to do here

For a first family visit, head to NaturParkHaus Stechlin, Kirchstraße 4 in Menz. Try the animal-sound and different-ways-of-seeing exhibits, then take the 6.4 km Rundwanderweg Roofensee from the nearby park administration at Friedensplatz. It follows the lake through woodland, with benches and a bathing place along the way. The separate Wald- und Wassererlebnispfad uses an approximately 6 km circuit around the same lake; borrow its equipment and directions from the visitor centre if you want numbered activities as you walk.

At Neuglobsow, the 4.1 km Rundwanderweg Dagowsee starts at the Stechlinsee-Center. It mixes village shores, woodland, interpretation boards and a timber walkway through wet alder woodland. For stronger walkers, the Rundwanderweg Großer Stechlinsee is a 13.6 km lake circuit, excluding the peninsula extension. Allow another approximately 500 m each way from the Stechlinsee-Center through the village to the lakeside start. Broad forest roads alternate with narrower shore paths and bridges; take the official route directions because the waymark colours change.

For a deeper look at peatlands, the 12 km Von Moor zu Moor circuit starts and finishes at the NaturParkHaus. Five themed stations explore different wetland types and what drainage or restoration does to them. Carry lunch. A shorter outing elsewhere in the park is the 2.2 km Binenbach circuit from Boltenmühle towards Kalksee, returning along the other bank. The stream runs below steep wooded banks, with railings on some sections: short does not mean level.

Seasonal info

The Stechlin loop reopened in June 2026 after its canal bridge was repaired; check the park’s current notices before setting out. The Rheinsberger Rhin is closed to all watercraft from 14 August 2026 until further notice because of low water. Do not plan a paddle there unless the closure is lifted. Wet leaves and timber can be slippery; choose a shorter walk in winter daylight and stay out of woodland during strong winds.

Accessibility

The NaturParkHaus exhibition and sensory garden are described as accessible. The Großer Barschsee moor-trail station can be reached from Menz along the Stechlinsee cycle route, but the approach includes approximately 100 m at 8% gradient. That access applies to the station, not the whole 12 km loop. Neuglobsow’s Stechlin bathing place has an adapted water-access area; confirm the current arrangements for your needs. None of these features makes the complete lake circuits wheelchair-accessible. For a wheelchair, rollator or pushchair, ask the visitor centre about surfaces and current conditions before choosing a route.

Walks and routes

Rundwanderweg Roofensee

Detailed surface, width and gradient measurements are not available for the whole circuit; ask locally before taking wheels.

Rundwanderweg Roofensee

Rundwanderweg Dagowsee

The short distance and walkway do not establish step-free access throughout; check conditions if travelling with wheels.

Rundwanderweg Dagowsee

Rundwanderweg Großer Stechlinsee

An adapted bathing access point in Neuglobsow is separate from the full walking route, whose complete accessibility is not established.

Rundwanderweg Großer Stechlinsee

Naturerlebnispfad Von Moor zu Moor

Only the Barschsee station has a described wheelchair approach: use the Stechlinsee cycle route from Menz, allowing for approximately 100 m at 8%.

Naturerlebnispfad Von Moor zu Moor

Rundwanderweg Binenbach

This is a short woodland walk with bank-edge terrain, not a confirmed accessible promenade. Keep children close beside the stream.

Rundwanderweg Binenbach

An unhurried Menz day

Begin with the NaturParkHaus while it is open, then decide how much walking everyone wants. Choose either the Roofensee circuit or a shorter out-and-back towards the lake; finish with the sensory garden if there is energy left.

Choose your Neuglobsow loop

Use Dagowsee for a shorter day with village history and wet woodland. Choose the full Stechlin circuit only when everyone is comfortable with a long walk and the return connection leaves enough margin.

Things to try

Give each lake a question

At one stop, count how often a duck dives. At another, compare the shore plants with those beside a woodland stream. Use the borrowed Roofensee trail kit if your children enjoy tasks with a destination.

Follow the water

Use the moor trail’s models to work out why draining peat changes the ground. At Grubitzwisch, compare the restored wetland with the story of its former use as meadow.

NaturParkHaus Stechlin

The indoor exhibits explore animal sounds, viewpoints and the hidden life of the park. Check opening days first, particularly outside May–August; the garden is an extra for a break in the rain.

Wildlife and habitats

Look across the water from a public lakeside path for diving ducks. Goldeneyes nest in tree cavities, including old black-woodpecker holes, but watch the water rather than searching for nests.

An easy subject even when birds keep out of sight: study the grey trunks and changing canopy from the path. Include fallen wood in a photograph to show how an old forest makes room for other life.

Look at the trees growing in ground that would be too wet for many others. From the boardwalk, compare the alder woodland with the drier forest you have just walked through.

In early June, look for yellow flowers among the green wetland vegetation from the path or viewing platform. Flowering varies with the weather; do not step into the wet ground for a closer photograph.

Scan above open water in the warmer months. A hunting osprey can plunge feet-first for a fish, but a distant flyover is a more realistic hope than a close photograph. Keep well away from nests.

Look for a large, mostly black woodpecker with red on the crown. Seeing one is a bonus; the old trees and cavities explain its importance even when the bird stays hidden. Leave cavity trees undisturbed.

Pause quietly where a public path overlooks water. A blue-and-orange bird perched above the surface may be fishing; use binoculars and never approach a steep bank to look for its nesting tunnel.

Beaver-cut wood is a more dependable thing to look for than the animal itself. Check what is visible beside the Dagowsee path without descending the bank or investigating a lodge.

Treat an otter as an unexpected extra. They live in the park but are difficult to watch, so do not build a family outing around seeing one or push into quiet waterside cover to search.

Stories and discoveries

A black woodpecker’s old home can become a goldeneye’s nursery: the relationship between mature trees and lake birds is one reason to keep looking beyond the water.

Stechlin’s famous clarity is vulnerable. Changes in nutrients have altered the lake, so its conservation story is still unfolding rather than preserved in Fontane’s time.

When to visit

Spring and autumn suit the beech woods; early June is a useful target for Roofensee’s yellow iris. In colder months, combine a shorter daylight walk with the NaturParkHaus on an opening day. Always check new closures before a long walk or a boat trip.

Getting there and practical advice

Menz’s visitor centre offers an indoor exhibition and sensory garden. The Roofensee route lists a bathing place with toilets; the Neuglobsow Stechlin bathing area lists a playground and public toilet. Confirm seasonal availability before depending on waterside facilities.

For Menz, travel by rail to Gransee or Fürstenberg/Havel, then bus to Friedensplatz. Drivers can follow the B96 to Gransee and the L22 towards Menz. For Neuglobsow, use the Stechlinsee-Center parking area or check buses 836 and 839 in VBB for your travel date.

For specific mobility needs, contact the NaturParkHaus on +49 33082 51210. Ask about the exact entrance, toilets and surface conditions for your chosen outing. The published Barschsee approach includes an 8% slope for about 100 m; the full moor route has no equivalent access claim.

Good to know before you go

Pick your base

Menz, Neuglobsow and Boltenmühle are different starting points; choose the day’s walk before you travel.

Borrow before walking

Ask the NaturParkHaus for the Wald- und Wassererlebnispfad equipment and directions; allow for its opening hours and a hire charge.

Pack the picnic

Food stops on the moor circuit are in Menz, so take drinks and lunch with you.

Keep the route handy

Save the official directions before the Stechlin walk, and leave the peninsula extension for a deliberately longer day.

Watch from the path

Use binoculars for birds and leave nest holes, wetland edges and deadwood undisturbed.

Follow the park code

Stay on signed trails, keep dogs on a lead, take litter home and park in designated spaces. Fires, barbecues and camping stoves are prohibited.

Frequently asked questions

For Menz, take a train to Gransee or Fürstenberg/Havel and connect by bus to Menz, Friedensplatz. For Neuglobsow, the tourism office lists bus 836 from Gransee and 839 from Fürstenberg/Havel, reached by RE5. Check your date and return connection in the VBB journey planner before choosing a long loop.
The walking routes have outdoor starting points rather than one park entrance. The NaturParkHaus exhibition charges admission; its sensory garden is free. Check the centre’s current opening days, especially for an autumn or winter visit.
Use the NaturParkHaus exhibition as your main activity. From September to April its regular opening days are Wednesday to Sunday; school holidays and public holidays have additional opening arrangements. Check before travelling, and save the longer woodland routes for better weather.
