Adamello Brenta Nature Park

Water is a good way into this mountain park.

About

Water is a good way into this mountain park. At Lake Tovel, wooded shores frame the Brenta; in Val Genova, tributaries tumble into the Sarca; at Vallesinella, springs feed cascades beneath limestone mountains. These are different days out, approached from different gateways. Choose the one closest to your base and leave room for a visitor centre or an extra stretch of trail. Be ready to snap and learn! Get the Snappit app to identify any nature species you find here.

Established in 1967 and enlarged in 1987, the provincial park combines nature protection, scientific research and the lives of mountain communities. Pastures and huts reflect that human history. Brown-bear reintroduction is another important chapter, explored through visitor-centre interpretation.

What to do here

Choose Tovel for a lake walk, Val Genova for a flexible riverside outing, or Vallesinella for cascades reached from Madonna di Campiglio. Longer hut walks, glaciers and the Brenta’s equipped routes are separate undertakings: match the itinerary to your experience and get current local advice.

Seasonal info

Snow, ice, storms and municipal road orders can change access even when a parking page permits entry. Check your valley and date, including how you will return.

Accessibility

Choose a specific accessible stretch: Tovel’s full circuit has rocky steps. Ask about surfaces, the parking-to-path connection and toilets for your needs.

Walks and routes

Lake Tovel: a shore walk or the complete circuit

Start from the lake parking area and follow the signed Giro del Lago. The western side leads through woodland towards Casa del Parco Lago Rosso; it makes a satisfying out-and-back if you want to keep the walking straightforward. For the complete listed itinerary, the official route gives 4.2 km and 1 hour 30 minutes; other parking starts change the approach. Allow longer for photographs and the centre. The eastern section narrows and crosses exposed rock steps above the water, with a handline in places. Turn back on the broader path if that does not suit your group. See the official Lake Tovel route.

The full loop is not a step-free route. For pushchairs or wheelchairs, discuss the usable shore section and the approach from your assigned parking area with the park.

Val Genova: Nardis and a manageable piece of the waterfall trail

Ponte Verde is a useful starting point for the Sentiero delle Cascate, which follows the Sarca through the valley towards Malga Bedole. Nardis makes a natural first focus, with water descending from the Presanella side. Choose a section and a turnaround before you leave: the entire valley walk is a much bigger undertaking than a quick waterfall visit. For a separate steeper detour, the park identifies SAT 214 opposite its information point shortly before Ponte Rosso as the approach to the Lares falls. Do not confuse that climb with a level riverside stroll. Allow two to four hours for a chosen lower-valley outing with stops, adjusting to your actual parking and turnaround; this is our suggested allowance, not a timing for the whole trail. Explore Val Genova.

A short outing can avoid the long upper valley, but riverside paths, wet ground and the steep Lares spur need separate assessment. For step-free access, arrange a specific viewing stop with the park.

Vallesinella: upper falls, with a choice at the cascade

From the Rifugio Vallesinella parking area, follow the signed path into the woods towards Cascate Alte. The tourism board gives about 30 minutes to the upper falls. You can return the same way or, if conditions and your footing are good, continue up the zigzags and wooden bridges towards Piana di Vallesinella, about another 20 minutes, then follow signs back to Rifugio Vallesinella. The middle falls are a separate option: about 20 minutes down from near the parking area, with an uphill return to allow for. Budget around one and a half to two and a half hours for an unhurried upper-falls outing; adding the middle falls extends it. See the official waterfall directions.

Expect uneven forest paths, wet rock and changes of level. Bridges and railings do not make the upper continuation suitable for wheelchairs or ordinary pushchairs.

A relaxed first day

From Val di Non, combine Tovel’s shore with a picnic and Lago Rosso when open. From Pinzolo or Carisolo, choose a manageable Val Genova section. From Madonna di Campiglio, focus on Vallesinella. These are alternative plans, not consecutive stages.

Two days, two kinds of mountain

Pair Val Genova with Tovel or Vallesinella on a second day. Add the Geopark centre when open to connect the scenery with its geology. Allow for the road transfer between valleys.

Things to try

Walking in bear country

Use the province’s bear coexistence guidance before your visit. Make your presence audible while walking, keep dogs on a lead and never feed wildlife. If you see a bear, do not approach, follow it or stay to photograph it. Keep calm and withdraw slowly; do not run. The provincial guidance covers closer encounters too. Individual sighting maps cannot tell you where a bear is now or prove an area is bear-free. In an emergency, call 112.

An indoor way to understand the mountains

Casa del Parco Geopark in Carisolo uses interactive exhibits to explain rock formation, water and glacial landscapes. It is a good companion to Val Genova when open, but its advertised summer calendar does not establish October opening: call before making a special journey. On the Tovel side, Lago Rosso is another option only when both the building and access road are available. Consult the visitor-centre directory to choose a realistic indoor plan.

Wildlife and habitats

Brown bear

The park’s emblem is a wild resident supported by a reintroduction programme. Learn about its ecology without seeking an encounter.

Chamois

A characteristic high-mountain ungulate recorded in the park. Observe any distant animals without leaving the trail or closing the gap.

Alpine ibex

The park’s ibex colony resulted from reintroduction. Its presence is a conservation fact, not a reliable stop on a valley itinerary.

Alpine marmot

Recorded among the park’s characteristic mammals. Carry binoculars and let wildlife encounters remain a bonus.

Golden eagle

The park reports nesting golden eagles. Watch from a distance and never approach a nest or follow a bird towards it.

Norway spruce

One of the conifers identified by the park in its mountain forest belt.

European larch

A conifer associated with the park’s higher woods and the changing pattern of mountain pasture.

Stories and discoveries

Why the two sides look so different

The Brenta’s sedimentary rocks preserve the story of ancient seas; Adamello–Presanella is dominated by intrusive rock, especially tonalite, formed from magma cooling below ground. Water behaves differently too. In the Brenta, it travels through soluble rock and returns at springs; in glacial valleys such as Val Genova, streams plunge over the steps left between side valleys and the main trough. Looking at a waterfall is also a way of reading the mountain’s structure.

Forests with a human history

Lower broadleaf woods give way to conifer forests, including Norway spruce and European larch, then to open high-country vegetation. Pasture clearings interrupt the forest: grazing and forestry have helped shape the pattern you see. The park describes larch as a pioneer on high ground where grazing has ceased. Leave flowers and cones in place and enjoy the changes from the path.

The lake’s colour has a history

Tovel’s spectacular red blooms ended in 1964. The municipality’s account of the SALTO research links the change to reduced nutrient inputs as livestock management changed in the catchment. It is an ecological story involving a microscopic organism, water and people, rather than a colour show you can schedule.

When to visit

Access check: 19 October 2026

Val Genova and Vallesinella ended paid-parking management, online reservations and summer shuttles on 27 September 2026; their dated notices currently allow free access, subject to later municipal restrictions. Tovel remains paid and bookable on Saturdays and Sundays through 1 November, with free-access parking on weekdays. At Lago Rosso, the 6 October notice lists weekend opening through 1 November, 11:00–13:00 and 14:00–18:00, free entry. Confirm again for your travel date.

A forecast can change the whole outing

In August 2026, heavy rain triggered a debris flow from Rio Gabbiolo onto the Val Genova road. The later access notice does not remove the need to check individual paths and bridges. Look at Meteotrentino and the park’s notices, then follow on-site instructions. In heavy rain or thunderstorms, choose an indoor alternative rather than moving closer to a waterfall or stream. In winter, these summer routes require a fresh assessment of snow, ice and road access.

Getting there and practical advice

Casa del Parco Lago Rosso

Beside Lake Tovel, this small centre explains the old red-water phenomenon and valley ecology through models, audiovisual material and displays. Check seasonal opening before including it. Plan a Lago Rosso visit.

Food, water and practical stops

Lakeside hospitality buildings and refuges do not guarantee an open kitchen or toilet. Carry food and water if you have not checked. Reserve overnight refuge accommodation directly. For park information, call +39 0465 806666.

Getting to the right valley

For Val Genova, approach through Carisolo in Val Rendena; Vallesinella is approached from Madonna di Campiglio. Tovel is reached from Tuenno in Ville d’Anaunia. By public transport, use Trento as a rail-to-bus connection for the Val Rendena towns, checking the Tione connection or through service for your date. Trentino Trasporti supplies the regional timetables. Reaching a gateway town does not establish a last-mile connection to a trailhead.

Tovel parking: choose the actual car park

The booking portal distinguishes several parking areas: some are kilometres from the lake. Check your selected location, not just the valley name. When shuttle mobility is active, the Lavacel–Lago road is closed to ordinary traffic from 11:00 to 14:30, and booked vehicles must enter before 11:00. Online purchase is recommended by 06:00 that day; on-site purchase depends on space. If valley parking fills, vehicles may be redirected to Ex Cofco in Tuenno with a shuttle activated. Check Tovel parking.

Val Genova and Vallesinella: check the return as well as the arrival

In the summer management period, both valleys use timed road controls and seasonal transport. Consult the separate Val Genova and Vallesinella pages. Confirm the final bus, the stop you need and whether a service can be booked before starting a one-way walk. Do not carry old summer departure times into an autumn plan.

Ask about the whole chain of access

The park’s accessibility page currently flags maintenance affecting wheelchair use on both Nudole and Amolacqua; do not substitute them as guaranteed accessible alternatives. For Tovel or a short Val Genova visit, ask about the current surface, gradient, drop-off, accessible toilet and return transport. The park describes free parking provisions for vehicles carrying a disabled visitor with a displayed permit, but the access page and booking portal give different booking procedures. Confirm the practical arrangement with [email protected] or +39 0465 806666. Read the park accessibility advice.

Good to know before you go

Pick your valley before booking parking

a reservation for one entrance does not cover another.

Carry water, food and an extra warm layer even on a short outing; seasonal buildings may be closed.

Keep children close beside water and on bridges. Spray makes rock and timber slippery.

Save your route and return arrangements offline. Mobile coverage is not guaranteed above Ponte Maria in Val Genova.

Keep dogs on a lead, take all rubbish home and leave plants and rocks where they are.

Frequently asked questions

No. Parco dell’Adamello in Lombardy has its own administration. The larger Adamello Brenta UNESCO Global Geopark is another designation, whose extent differs from this Trentino nature park.
Check your chosen valley’s parking or transport service. Controls are seasonal. A parking reservation does not certify trail opening or shuttle operation.
The eastern shore has rocky steps. Choose a shorter out-and-back on the broader shore, subject to current conditions and your equipment.
The famous blooms ceased in 1964. Visit Casa del Parco Lago Rosso to understand the organism and nutrient changes behind them.
No sighting is promised. Do not seek a close encounter; use the park’s interpretation and follow provincial coexistence advice.
Plan it separately: high routes can involve exposure, snow, ice and specialist equipment. Consult a qualified mountain guide if unsure.
