The Bergen County Zoological Park first opened its doors in 1960 as the Van Saun Zoo, beginning as a modest collection of animals within Van Saun County Park. Over the decades, the zoo expanded its exhibits, continually improving animal habitats and strengthening its educational mission to become a cherished local attraction. It gained accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, solidifying its commitment to animal welfare and conservation. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the zoo significantly grew its collection, adding numerous endangered species like Ocelots, Red Brocket Deer, Mountain Lions, Snowy Owls, Andean Condors, Golden Lion Tamarins, and Galapagos Tortoises. The 21st century saw further advancements with the addition of a state-of-the-art Animal Care Center, an Outdoor Demonstration Area for public programming, and an Education/Discovery Center, all designed to enhance visitor experience and further the zoo's conservation and educational goals.
