Nestled within the scenic Atascadero Lake Park, the Charles Paddock Zoo, now known as the Central Coast Zoo, offers a charming and intimate wildlife experience on California's beautiful Central Coast. This five-acre, AZA-accredited facility provides a unique opportunity for visitors to connect with over 100 animals representing more than 45 species from around the globe. Unlike larger, sprawling zoos, its compact size allows for an unhurried exploration, fostering a closer connection between guests and the animal residents in a peaceful, shaded environment. As you wander the beautifully landscaped paths, you'll embark on a global journey.
Marvel at the playful antics of the black-handed spider monkeys in their specialized habitat, or observe the energetic meerkats standing guard. A highlight for many is the Thelma Vetter Red Panda Experience, where these "cinnamon-tufted mammals" can be seen munching bamboo and climbing in their spacious, newly designed exhibit. While the beloved Malayan tiger, Menderu, sadly passed away in 2025, his legacy as a significant ambassador for his species remains a part of the zoo's story, having been a main attraction for many years.
The zoo is dedicated to conservation, with many of its residents participating in globally managed programs to preserve endangered species and their natural habitats. Beyond just viewing animals, visitors can engage with educational signage, and sometimes catch keeper talks or animal ambassador experiences that provide insightful details about the animals' behaviors and conservation efforts. This blend of education, conservation, and up-close animal encounters makes the Charles Paddock Zoo a truly rewarding and enriching destination for all ages. Turn your visit into a safari! The Charles Paddock Zoo traces its humble beginnings to 1955 when Charles "Chuck" Paddock, a San Luis Obispo County Park Ranger, began caring for injured and abandoned wild animals at the county animal shelter. His collection grew rapidly, reportedly starting with an opossum and expanding to over 125 birds and mammals by 1959. In 1963, his growing menagerie was relocated to its current five-acre site adjacent to Atascadero Lake Park, initially opening as the Atascadero Children's Zoo. The city of Atascadero took over management in 1979, officially renaming it the Charles Paddock Zoo in 1980 to honor its founder. A significant milestone was achieved in 1991 when the zoo became one of the smallest facilities to receive accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), a mark of excellence in animal care and conservation. In June 2025, the zoo rebranded itself as the Central Coast Zoo, aiming to broaden its regional appeal and reinforce its commitment to conservation.
Beyond observing the animals, look for scheduled keeper talks and animal ambassador experiences for educational insights. Take advantage of the picnic areas and consider combining your zoo visit with a stroll around Atascadero Lake, paddle boating, or playing at the nearby playground.
The zoo hosts several family-friendly events throughout the year, such as "Party for the Planet" for Earth Day, "Zoo Boo" during Halloween, and "Holiday Magic" around Christmas, which can add a festive touch to your visit.
The zoo's grounds feature stroller- and wheelchair-friendly paved pathways, ensuring accessibility for all visitors. Ample handicap parking is available, and restrooms are conveniently located near the entrance. Stroller, wagon, and wheelchair rentals are also available.
