The Hattiesburg Zoo opened its gates on Easter Sunday in 1950, situated within the 12 acres of Kamper Park. The park itself has a longer history, with John Kamper donating 40 acres to the Daughters of the Confederacy in 1902, which was then given to the city of Hattiesburg in 1908 for public use. Legend has it that Kamper Park was a popular spot for people to bring animals in the early 1900s, a tradition that inspired a local women's club to raise funds for establishing a formal zoo. Throughout its history, the zoo has evolved from a modest animal collection into a modern educational center, consistently updating its enclosures to mimic natural habitats.
