buffs and geology enthusiasts * Anyone seeking a unique adventure or eco-tourism experience
Take the guided boat tour to learn about the cave's history and geology, explore the natural features like the "blue holes" along the trails, observe butterflies in their habitat (seasonally), and enjoy birdwatching along the nature trails. Visitors can also explore historical exhibits at the Visitor Center.
The cave maintains a comfortable 57°F (14°C) year-round, so a light jacket is recommended even in summer. The boat tour's availability can be affected by heavy rains, which may lead to high water levels, so it's advisable to call ahead. The Butterfly Habitat is typically open from late May through mid-September. Special events like the Scarecrow Trail occur in October.
The cave boat tour is *not* wheelchair or scooter accessible due to natural features, steps, and the need to board a swaying boat. Guests must be able to navigate a 30-degree sloped paved path and several steps. However, the walking portion of the tour is stroller-friendly (strollers must be left before boarding the boat), and the valley's blue hole trails are generally accessible and dog-friendly. A free video of the tour is available at the Visitor Center for those unable to take the boat tour.
The paramount highlight is the 45-minute **Underground Boat Tour**, Kentucky's only one, which includes a 20-minute guided walk and a 25-minute boat ride through the cave. Other highlights include the **seasonal Butterfly Habitat**, over two miles of **nature trails** including the **Blue Hole Trail**, the **Nature Explore Playscape**, and a **gemstone sluice**.
