Natural Bridge Caverns is much more than a cave; it's a testament to the curiosity of explorers and the vision of a family. The caverns were first discovered on March 27, 1960, by four college students from St. Mary's University in San Antonio who, armed with only headlamps and flashlights, squeezed through a narrow opening and found two miles of unexplored passages. The Wuest family, owners of the land, recognized the incredible potential of this natural wonder and made the decision to develop it for public enjoyment. After careful planning, construction began in 1963 to install lighting and paved trails, and the caverns officially opened to the public on July 3, 1964. Evidence such as human teeth, arrowheads, and an 8,000-year-old bear jawbone found inside the caverns suggest that early peoples and animals used the uppermost areas for shelter thousands of years ago. The name "Natural Bridge Caverns" itself comes from a 60-foot natural limestone bridge formed when a sinkhole collapsed, leaving the archway suspended over the cavern's entrance.
Go deep underground to marvel at ancient geological formations, experience thrilling light and sound shows, challenge yourself on ropes courses and ziplines, search for treasures at the mining sluice, and navigate a fun maze.
The caverns are a constant 70°F (21°C) with 99% humidity, making them ideal year-round. Outdoor attractions like Twisted Trails may close due to severe weather. Special events like Cavern Fall Fest (October) and Christmas at the Caverns offer seasonal celebrations. Limited summer Bracken Bat Flight events occur nearby.
While most above-ground facilities, including the Visitor's Center, Natural Bridge Mining Company, Maze, and Butterfly Gardens, are accessible for guests with mobility restrictions, the underground cavern tours are not wheelchair accessible due to natural formations, ramps, inclines, stairs, and restrictive passages. Strollers are also not permitted on cavern tours. Natural Bridge Caverns is certified KultureCity Sensory Inclusive.
