The Virginia Aquarium first opened its doors on June 14, 1986, originally known as the Virginia Marine Science Museum. Its initial focus was on the aquatic life found in Virginia's rivers, the Chesapeake Bay, and the nearby marine waters. In 1995, the facility underwent a significant expansion, tripling its original size. A notable milestone occurred on November 21, 2009, with the opening of the "Restless Planet" series of exhibits, a $25 million renovation that introduced four new habitats—Malaysian Peat Swamp, Coastal Sahara Desert, Red Sea, and Indonesia's Flores Island—and effectively doubled the number of species displayed. The Aquarium celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2026, marking decades of growth from a small museum to a leading center for marine science and conservation, operating through a public-private partnership with the City of Virginia Beach.
