Blumengarten Bexbach

Come to Blumengarten Bexbach for a relaxed mix of garden paths, miniature landmarks and a playground, beneath the tall Hindenburgturm.

About

Come to Blumengarten Bexbach for a relaxed mix of garden paths, miniature landmarks and a playground, beneath the tall Hindenburgturm. Start at the museum side on Niederbexbacher Straße and choose a few things to enjoy slowly: a pond, a model building, then a pause beneath the trees. The Gulliver-Welt models give children something to recognise while the grown-ups take in the garden.

Older trees and shrubs give wild birds places to shelter, and the garden’s ponds are worth a quiet look from the path. The tall tower houses the Saarländisches Bergbaumuseum, so coal-mining history is part of the setting too. A garden-only visit works well when you want a modest outing; the museum and a longer walk can turn it into a fuller day. Planning to visit? The garden grew out of an unusual post-war housing exhibition. Model homes were built in 1949, and a 1951 garden exhibition showed how ornamental planting could improve everyday domestic life. The public garden included different examples of small gardens, pond gardens and planting styles. The Hindenburgturm’s museum had already opened in 1934. Together, the tower and grounds tell two connected Bexbach stories: mining work and the wish for a more pleasant place to live.

What to do here

For the simplest visit, explore the public paths from the museum-side entrance towards the ponds and miniature displays, choose your own turnaround, and retrace your way to the entrance. Leave time for the playground. This is a flexible garden outing with no fixed distance. If everyone wants a longer walk, the signed Monte Barbara Weg is a separate 4.36 km circuit with 40 m of ascent, returning to the museum. It includes woodland paths and steps. The climb to the Barbara statue on the spoil heap is an extra excursion, outside those circuit figures.

Seasonal info

The garden is open all year. Autumn leaves can make the woodland circuit’s steps slippery. From November through February, the museum’s Sunday opening is limited to the first Sunday of each month. It also opens Tuesday–Saturday; check its own opening page for times. Monday is normally its closing day, with a public-holiday exception. Garden events can make an otherwise quiet visit busier.

Accessibility

The garden occupies comparatively level ground. For a wheelchair or pushchair visit, ask the city about the surfaces, kerbs and widths along your chosen entrance and garden paths. The woodland circuit has steps; the separate Monte Barbara ascent is steeper. The Hindenburgturm has a lift to its viewpoint, and the museum welcomes wheelchair users. Confirm lift operation, underground access and toilet suitability with the museum before relying on them.

Walks and routes

Begin beside the Hindenburgturm on the garden side of Niederbexbacher Straße. Choose the open public paths towards the ponds and miniature displays, adding playground time if it suits your group.

Turn around whenever you are ready and retrace your chosen garden paths to the same museum-side entrance. Add your separate onward walk to the station, bus stop or parking place.

The garden is on comparatively level ground. Check the paths and any kerbs as you go; this suggestion is not a confirmed step-free circuit.

Use the open paths and respect barriers during garden work or events.

Things to try

A miniature landmark challenge

Choose one model building each and explain what makes it recognisable: its roofline, arches, tower or outline. Take a photograph from the path, then look for a garden view with the full-sized Hindenburgturm in the background.

Five quiet minutes

Before the playground, stand together beside a tree-lined path and count different birds you can see or hear. You do not need a name for every one. Keep away from nests, leave shrubs undisturbed and never use food to draw birds closer.

Move indoors at the mining museum

The museum in Hindenburgturm and its underground demonstration mine offer a useful change of plan when a long outdoor visit feels unappealing. Check admission, opening times and tour arrangements first. For accessibility questions, call 06826 4887 and describe which parts you want to visit.

Wildlife and habitats

Look for the small blue flowers if the spring planting is still in place. Bexbach planted forget-me-nots here in March 2026 as a reminder of people living with dementia. These are cultivated plants; the name Myosotis covers several species.

Watch for a blue cap among the branches. Pause on a path and let the bird come into view rather than following it into the planting.

A black head, white cheeks and a yellow breast help separate a great tit from a blue tit. Compare the two if both appear.

Look quietly along the shrub edges for an orange-red face and breast. Keep your distance if a robin repeatedly carries food into cover.

Watch the boundary between grass and shrubs. A still photograph may work better than walking closer while a blackbird searches the ground.

Look for the adult’s red face and bright yellow wing stripe. Try watching a tree from one comfortable spot before moving on.

Look for a sturdy bill and yellow flashes in the wings. Binoculars are useful when a greenfinch stays high in a park tree.

Watch for pale wing bars as a chaffinch changes perch. A brief look is enough; leave it space to continue feeding.

Getting there and practical advice

Plan the practical stops

The playground makes a useful pause during a garden visit. For a weekend outing, plan your toilet stop around the tower facilities and check their opening arrangements beforehand.

By train, bus or car

For a train-based visit, plan through Bexbach station and allow roughly 15 minutes on foot to the garden, plus the same walk back. With younger children, give yourselves more time. Search for Bexbach, Im Blumengarten in the current Saarfahrplan for buses and return connections. If you drive, use designated visitor parking and follow event-day signs.

Good to know before you go

Getting there

Use Niederbexbacher Straße 62, 66450 Bexbach, for the museum-side arrival. Bexbach station is roughly a 15-minute walk away; allow longer with small children.

Toilets

The garden-office toilets currently open Monday–Friday, 08:30–15:30. The city also lists toilets at Hindenburgturm for weekends. Check arrangements before a late visit.

Food and drink

Bring water and a snack. Check opening hours separately if you want to eat on site.

With children

Stay close beside the ponds and when crossing Niederbexbacher Straße. Let the miniature buildings be things to look at, without climbing on them.

Dogs

Keep dogs on a lead in the garden.

On longer walks

Wear shoes with good grip and follow the signed route and any temporary barriers.

Frequently asked questions

Ordinary garden entry is free and the park opens year-round. The mining museum has separate admission. Check arrangements for special events.
The published 4.36 km circuit passes the foot of the spoil heap. A climb to the statue adds extra walking and climbing, so do not count it inside the circuit’s distance or time.
The city describes plans to redesign the grounds while continuing to list the park as open. Check its Blumengarten page before travelling and follow local diversions or barriers.
