Neon Skimmer
libellula croceipennis
The Neon Skimmer (Libellula croceipennis) is a striking species of dragonfly known for the intensely vivid coloration of the males. Living up to its name, the mature male appears almost fluorescent, making it a spectacular sight as it darts over sunlit ponds and slow-moving streams. Native to the southwestern United States and extending down through Central America, these agile predators are a favorite among nature enthusiasts and macro photographers. Beyond their dazzling appearance, Neon Skimmers play a crucial role in their local ecosystems by keeping populations of mosquitoes and other flying insects in check. They are fiercely territorial, often perching on prominent twigs or reeds to survey their domain before launching into rapid, acrobatic flight to intercept prey or chase away rival males. Their presence is generally an excellent indicator of a healthy, functioning aquatic environment. Learn to recognize Neon Skimmer in the wild using the Snappit field guide app.
Habitat: Typically found near warm, slow-moving or still fresh waters such as ponds, marshy edges, slow streams, and artificial water features in arid to semi-arid regions.
Appearance
Mature males are easily identifiable by their brilliant, solid neon-red to orange-red bodies, including their faces and eyes, accented by amber-tinted wing bases. In contrast, females and immature males exhibit a much more subdued golden-brown or yellowish-brown coloration with a faint, pale stripe running down the back of the abdomen. Both sexes feature large, multifaceted eyes typical of dragonflies and a wingspan of approximately 7 to 9 centimeters, with heavily veined, transparent wings that remain spread horizontally when at rest.

Interesting facts
Despite their fiery adult appearance, Neon Skimmers spend the majority of their lives underwater as drab, muddy-colored nymphs perfectly camouflaged among pond debris.
Male Neon Skimmers are highly territorial and will aggressively patrol their chosen section of a pond, chasing away rival males and even other dragonfly species.
The striking neon-red color of the mature male Neon Skimmer is linked to temperature and sunlight exposure, becoming more vibrant as the insect fully matures.
When hunting, a Neon Skimmer forms a 'basket' with its spiky legs to scoop its insect prey right out of the air, often eating smaller meals without landing.
Special abilities
Precision Flight Acrobatics
Thanks to independently controlled wings, Neon Skimmers can hover, fly backward, and change direction in a fraction of a second to outmaneuver prey.
360-Degree Vision
Their massive compound eyes contain thousands of individual lenses, granting them a nearly 360-degree field of view to easily detect motion.
Extendable Nymph Jaw
During their aquatic nymph stage, they possess an extendable lower jaw (labium) that shoots out in milliseconds to grab passing aquatic prey.
