Nestled in the lush Sasalı region of Çiğli, İzmir, the İzmir Doğal Yaşam Parkı (Izmir Wildlife Park) offers a refreshing and immersive experience, standing apart from traditional zoos. Opened in 2008, this non-profit park spans a vast 425,000 m², prioritizing natural habitats over restrictive cages. It's a place where animals roam freely within thoughtfully designed enclosures, separated from visitors by natural barriers like water and ditches, creating an illusion of being amidst wildlife in their natural environment. As a proud member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) since 2011, the park is deeply committed to conservation, education, and animal welfare, making it a significant center for biodiversity awareness in Turkey.
The park is a vibrant tapestry of diverse ecosystems, hosting nearly 1,800 animals from 132 species, alongside thousands of trees and hundreds of plant varieties. Visitors can journey through the expansive African Savanna, home to magnificent giraffes, zebras, and hippos, or marvel at the grace of Asian elephants, including "İzmir," the first Asian elephant born in Turkey. The unique Tropical Center provides an experience of a rainforest, complete with reptiles like crocodiles and various tropical birds. Primate enthusiasts will enjoy the Monkey Islands, while the powerful presence of lions, Bengal tigers, and the recently arrived black jaguar can be observed in their spacious habitats.
İzmir Doğal Yaşam Parkı is more than just an attraction; it's a breath of fresh air for both its inhabitants and its visitors. Its open-air concept and dedication to replicating natural environments provide an enriching and educational outing for all ages. Whether you're capturing the playful antics of meerkats, observing the majestic Eurasian lynx, or simply enjoying a peaceful stroll amidst diverse flora, the park leaves a lasting impression, fostering a deeper connection with the natural world and highlighting the importance of conservation. The İzmir Doğal Yaşam Parkı was born from a vision to provide a more humane and natural environment for animals, replacing the older İzmir Zoo located within Kültürpark. The original zoo, established in 1937, had operated on a much smaller 18,000 m² area. The İzmir Metropolitan Municipality initiated the construction of the new, expansive wildlife park in 2006, investing 21 million TL and completing the project within two years. Officially opened on November 30, 2008, the park marked a significant shift in zoological philosophy in Turkey, becoming the country's first natural life park designed without traditional cages. Instead, it adopted a modern approach using natural barriers like moats and ditches to ensure both animal welfare and visitor safety. This innovative design and commitment to conservation led to its full membership in the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) on April 3, 2011, solidifying its role in international wildlife protection efforts.
Beyond animal observation, utilize the observation towers for panoramic views, enjoy walks along the extensive trails, and let children play in designated areas. Cafes are available for refreshments.
