Jungle Island boasts a rich and storied past, beginning its journey in 1936 as "Parrot Jungle." Founded by Franz and Louise Scherr in Pinecrest, Florida, the attraction was envisioned as a place where birds could "fly free" and quickly gained international fame for its exotic birds, including the legendary Pinky, a high-wire bicycle-riding cockatoo, and its iconic pink flamingos. Over the decades, it welcomed notable visitors such as Sir Winston Churchill and President Jimmy Carter. In 2003, the park relocated from its original suburban setting to its current waterfront home on Watson Island, situated between Downtown Miami and South Beach, and was rebranded as Parrot Jungle Island. To better reflect its expanding collection of diverse animals, plants, and activities beyond just parrots, the park was officially renamed "Jungle Island" in 2007. Following significant damage from Hurricane Irma, Jungle Island underwent major renovations, re-emerging as an eco-adventure park with new attractions like waterslides, an outdoor wind tunnel, and ziplines, further solidifying its reputation as a dynamic destination.
Engage with animals through interactive encounters, attend educational animal shows, wander through immersive nature trails, visit the petting zoo, and for the adventurous, try the Treetop Trekking Miami ziplines and ropes courses.
As much of the park is outdoors, consider bringing an umbrella or raincoat during the rainy season. The South Florida sun is intense year-round, so essential items include sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, even on cloudy days. Animal activity can be affected by inclement weather, with some animals moving to indoor housing during storms.
Jungle Island is fully wheelchair accessible, with paved trails and accessible dining facilities throughout the park.
