The SEA LIFE London Aquarium first opened its doors in March 1997 as the London Aquarium, situated in the historic County Hall on the South Bank of the River Thames. In 2005, it gained notoriety for displaying three robotic fish, designed by the University of Essex, which could swim autonomously and avoid obstacles. The aquarium underwent a significant transformation after being acquired by Merlin Entertainments in April 2008 for an undisclosed sum. Following a £5 million refurbishment, it reopened in April 2009 as part of the SEA LIFE brand, featuring a new underwater tunnel, Shark Walk, and a revamped Pacific Ocean tank. Further additions included a Gentoo penguin exhibit in May 2011, with penguins transferred from Edinburgh Zoo, and a slight relocation within County Hall in 2015 due to the opening of Shrek's Adventure! London.
