The SEA LIFE London Aquarium first opened its doors in March 1997 as the London Aquarium, situated in the historic County Hall on the South Bank of the River Thames. In 2005, it gained notoriety for displaying three robotic fish, designed by the University of Essex, which could swim autonomously and avoid obstacles. The aquarium underwent a significant transformation after being acquired by Merlin Entertainments in April 2008 for an undisclosed sum. Following a £5 million refurbishment, it reopened in April 2009 as part of the SEA LIFE brand, featuring a new underwater tunnel, Shark Walk, and a revamped Pacific Ocean tank. Further additions included a Gentoo penguin exhibit in May 2011, with penguins transferred from Edinburgh Zoo, and a slight relocation within County Hall in 2015 due to the opening of Shrek's Adventure! London.
Beyond exploring the themed zones, visitors can enjoy daily talks and feeding sessions for various animals, including octopuses, rays, penguins, sharks, and rainforest creatures. Interactive touch pools offer a chance to feel starfish. Consider the "Snorkelling with Sharks" experience for a unique encounter.
Opening hours vary throughout the year, with extended hours during summer and school holidays. Special events and exhibitions are often hosted throughout the year. It can get quite warm inside, but the penguin area is cold, so dressing in layers is advisable.
The SEA LIFE London Aquarium is fully wheelchair accessible across its three floors, with lifts located next to all stairs and ramps for entry and exit. There are three accessible bathrooms with baby-changing facilities. Carers or essential companions of disabled visitors are eligible for a free entry ticket upon showing relevant documentation. Assistance dogs are also welcome. Wheelchairs are available for hire with a deposit.
