Nemours Mansion and Gardens was conceived and built between 1909 and 1910 by industrialist and philanthropist Alfred I. du Pont as a gift for his second wife, Alicia. The estate was named after the French town of Nemours, which was represented by du Pont's great-great-grandfather, Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours, in the 1789 Estates-General. Designed by the prestigious New York architectural firm Carrère and Hastings, the 105-room mansion (with 77 rooms open for tour) is a magnificent example of 18th-century French neoclassical architecture, specifically in the Louis XVI style. The formal gardens were directly inspired by the luxurious grounds of the Petit Trianon at Versailles, reflecting Alfred du Pont's deep appreciation for French aesthetics. After Alfred du Pont's death in 1935, per his will, a charitable trust was established, leading to the creation of the Nemours Foundation, which now owns and operates the estate alongside the Nemours Children's Hospital.
