The New York Aquarium boasts a rich history, first opening its doors on December 10, 1896, at Castle Garden in Battery Park, Manhattan. Initially under the city's management, the New York Zoological Society (now Wildlife Conservation Society, WCS) assumed its operation in 1902, significantly expanding its collections and visitor numbers. The aquarium moved to its current 14-acre location on the Coney Island boardwalk in Brooklyn in 1957, partly due to the construction of the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel. The facility faced a major setback in October 2012 when Hurricane Sandy severely damaged it, leading to extensive flooding and power outages. Despite the devastation, a dedicated team saved 80 percent of the animal collection.
