The Cold Spring Historic District owes much of its character and development to its industrial past. The village was incorporated in 1846, but its significant growth began earlier with the establishment of the West Point Foundry in 1818. This foundry became one of the major industrial sites in the United States, playing a crucial role in providing munitions, including the famed Parrott gun, for the Union Army during the Civil War. The influx of workers for the foundry led to a building boom, resulting in many of the commercial, ecclesiastical, and residential structures that still stand today, most of which predate the Civil War. After the foundry closed in 1911, the village's prominence as an industrial hub waned, but it experienced a rebirth after World War II. In 1973, the central area of Cold Spring was officially designated a Federal Historic District, recognizing its well-preserved 19th-century buildings and unique townscape.
