Coolidge Reservation offers breathtaking coastal beauty and diverse natural landscapes.
This 66-acre nature reserve, managed by The Trustees of Reservations in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, is a captivating blend of rocky outcrops, lush woodlands, vital wetlands, and a serene sandy beach. The centerpiece is the iconic Ocean Lawn, an expansive grassy area perched dramatically above the Atlantic, providing panoramic vistas of Massachusetts Bay and the North Shore, even offering glimpses of the Boston skyline on clear days. It's a sanctuary where the land meets the sea, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in a peaceful coastal environment.
Explore a network of easy to moderate trails that wind through varied habitats. Discover the tranquility of Clarke Pond, a former salt marsh now supporting a freshwater ecosystem, where you might spot snapping turtles, great egrets, and snowy egrets amidst cattails and bulrushes. Hike up Bungalow Hill for quiet solitude and picturesque views of Magnolia Harbor. The coastal woodlands are home to New England wildlife such as fox and coyote, while the wildflower meadows in the fall burst with a sea of monarch butterflies, creating a vibrant spectacle. A visit to Gray Beach, also known as Magnolia Beach, reveals coastal flora like colorful beach pea and beach rose, adding to the reservation's natural charm.

The area now known as Coolidge Reservation was originally called Millet's Neck. Its transformation began in 1871 when Thomas Jefferson Coolidge, a prominent Boston financier, acquired the property for $12,000. The Coolidge family subsequently established a significant presence on the peninsula, with Thomas Jefferson Coolidge Jr. commissioning the renowned architect Charles McKim to design a grand Georgian-style mansion, completed in 1904. This opulent residence, known as the "Marble Palace" due to its distinctive marble foundation and embellishments, hosted distinguished guests, including President Woodrow Wilson in 1918 and Crown Prince Olav of Norway in 1938. Over time, the mansion was eventually razed, leaving the iconic Ocean Lawn. In a significant act of conservation, the Coolidge family donated much of the property to The Trustees of Reservations in 1990 and 1991, leading to the official establishment of Coolidge Reservation in 1992. Additional land, including Bungalow Hill, was later incorporated through gifts from the Essex County Greenbelt Association and Dr. Catherine Lastavica, expanding the reservation to its current 66 acres and ensuring its preservation for public enjoyment.
