The town of Delphi's origins trace back to William Wilson's donation of 100 acres along Deer Creek, with Samuel Milroy instrumental in establishing Delphi as the county seat in May 1828. Early growth was influenced by its location near the Wabash River and further spurred by the opening of the Wabash and Erie Canal in 1826, which facilitated trade and development. The arrival of the railroad in 1856 continued to shape the town's prosperity and physical landscape. The Delphi Courthouse Square Historic District was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 31, 2010, after achieving State Register status in January 2010. The nomination process began in 2007, spearheaded by the Delphi Preservation Society and Delphi Main Street, highlighting the community's dedication to preserving its rich architectural heritage. This designation recognized the district's exceptional collection of 43 buildings, 31 of which are considered "contributing" structures, many dating from the 1850s to the 1870s.
