Diergaarde Blijdorp began its remarkable journey in 1857, originating as a modest garden for pheasants and waterfowl in central Rotterdam. This early fascination with exotic birds quickly grew into a full-fledged zoological garden. The zoo faced a significant challenge during World War II when its original location was heavily bombed. Undeterred, the zoo was rebuilt and officially reopened on December 7, 1940, at its current site in the Blijdorp district, with a pioneering design by Dutch architect Sybold van Ravesteyn. The zoo expanded significantly in 2001 with the addition of the impressive Oceanium, nearly doubling its size. In 2007, marking its 150th anniversary, Diergaarde Blijdorp was recognized as a "rijksmonument" (national heritage site), boasting 21 national monuments, including the iconic Riviera Hall. The zoo continues to evolve, currently working on its ambitious "Masterplan 2050," which aims to further enhance conservation efforts and create even larger, more integrated habitats for its animal residents.
