About

Nestled within Fresno's expansive Roeding Park, the Fresno Chaffee Zoo offers an immersive journey into the wonders of wildlife, covering 39 acres and housing over 190 diverse species. This accredited institution by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is not just a place to see animals; it's an engaging experience designed to connect visitors with the natural world through thoughtfully crafted habitats and interactive opportunities. From the moment you step inside, you'll feel transported to various corners of the globe, encountering magnificent creatures in settings that mimic their native environments. The highlight of any visit is often the sprawling African Adventure, a 13-acre expanse that masterfully recreates the savannas and plains of Africa.

Here, you can witness the majestic African elephants, observe the powerful lions lounging on rocky outcrops, and marvel at the speed and grace of cheetahs. A truly unforgettable experience awaits at the Twiga Terrace, where you can get up close to feed reticulated giraffes, a rare opportunity to interact with the world's tallest mammal and even feel their surprisingly long, purplish-black tongues. Meanwhile, the recently added Kingdoms of Asia invites you on an adventure through lush forests and grasslands, home to endangered Malayan tigers, the intriguing sloth bears, and the captivating orangutans. Beyond these expansive habitats, the zoo boasts a variety of captivating exhibits.

Dive into the cool, brackish waters of Stingray Bay, where you can touch and even feed cownose and southern stingrays as they glide gracefully past your fingertips. At Sea Lion Cove, inspired by California's own coast, underwater viewing windows provide a spectacular perspective of playful sea lions and harbor seals darting through a 250,000-gallon saltwater tank. For a trip Down Under, the Roo Walkabout allows you to stroll alongside red kangaroos, emus, and kookaburras, offering a unique opportunity to enter their habitat. Families will also enjoy the lush Tropical Rainforest, the interactive Valley Farm, and the exciting, seasonal Zoorassic Park, featuring life-sized animatronic dinosaurs. Eager to name that creature? Identify any animal you find during your visit using the Snappit app.

The Fresno Chaffee Zoo's origins trace back to around 1908, initially as a modest collection within Roeding Park, featuring just two bears and approximately fifty birds. It officially opened as the Roeding Park Zoo in 1929. The zoo experienced significant growth in the 1940s and 50s, with notable additions like its first Asian elephant, Nosey, in 1949, and the construction of ten new exhibits. In 1965, Paul S. Chaffee became the zoo's first director, initiating a period of modernization. Following his passing in 1990, the zoo was renamed Chaffee Zoological Gardens of Fresno in his honor, a testament to his vision and impact. A pivotal moment arrived in 2004 with the passage of "Measure Z," a local funding initiative that has enabled substantial expansion and improvement, including the creation of major exhibits like African Adventure and Kingdoms of Asia, solidifying its status as a leading conservation and educational institution.
