The origins of Mounts Botanical Garden trace back to the vision of Marvin U. “Red” Mounts, who dedicated over 40 years to the Palm Beach County Extension, assisting local farmers and the community. Botanical plantings at the site began shortly after the Mounts Building was constructed in 1954, initially intended to establish a tropical fruit tree arboretum. The garden evolved significantly in 1975 when Clayton E. Hutcheson, then Director of the Palm Beach County Extension Service, envisioned creating a Horticultural Learning Center on the surrounding three acres. This initiative gained support from local plant-focused organizations and volunteers, leading to the establishment of the center in 1983. In 1985, an additional ten acres were acquired, and in 1986, the non-profit "Friends of the Mounts Botanical Garden" officially changed the name to Mounts Botanical Garden, cementing its mission as a botanical destination. The garden demonstrated remarkable resilience after Hurricanes Frances, Jean, and Wilma devastated much of its tree canopy in 2004 and 2005, with the community rallying to replant and restore its beauty.
Stroll through the 25 distinct garden areas, observe diverse plant species, feed the koi fish in Windows on the Floating World, participate in educational classes or workshops, and enjoy the seasonal art installations. You can also explore the permanent art collection via a self-guided tour.
