SeaWorld San Antonio, originally known as Sea World of Texas, first opened its gates on May 27, 1988. The park was developed by Harcourt, Brace and Jovanovich, and at its debut, it was marketed as "the largest educational, marine-life theme park in the world". Shortly after its opening, in 1989, Harcourt, Brace and Jovanovich sold the SeaWorld parks to Anheuser-Busch, Inc.. Over the decades, ownership transitioned, with the Blackstone Group acquiring the parks in 2009, and later, they came under the operation of United Parks & Resorts (formerly SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment). A significant shift occurred in 2016 when SeaWorld Entertainment announced that the current generation of orcas at its parks would be the last, ending their breeding program. The theatrical orca shows were phased out and replaced with more naturalistic "Orca Encounters," with SeaWorld San Antonio's new encounter opening on February 22, 2020. The park has a proud history of animal care, conservation, and has been recognized for its successful beluga whale breeding program.
