Gabis Arboretum was founded by Damien and Rita Gabis, who, driven by a desire to preserve green space, began purchasing land in the early 1990s. Starting with 72 acres, they gradually expanded the property to over 300 acres, which became known as Taltree Arboretum & Gardens. A non-profit foundation was established in 1998 to support the arboretum's mission, and Taltree officially opened to the public in October 2001. A significant development was the opening of the acclaimed Railway Garden in 2011. In a move to ensure its long-term sustainability and expand its educational impact, the Gabis family and the Taltree Arboretum & Gardens Foundation donated the entire arboretum to Purdue University Northwest in December 2017, with the transfer of ownership finalized in early 2018. This donation, valued at approximately $12 million, led to its renaming as Gabis Arboretum at Purdue Northwest, continuing its legacy of conservation, education, and recreation.
