The Towers Historic District's story begins with the construction of the Narragansett Pier Casino between 1883 and 1886. This grand casino, designed by the celebrated architects McKim, Mead & White, was the centerpiece of Narragansett, a highly prestigious Gilded Age resort that boasted 19 luxury hotels and attracted the nation's social elite. The casino provided a wide array of leisure activities, including boating, tennis, billiards, and a ballroom, rivaling even Newport's popularity. Notably, the popular seafood dish "clams casino" is widely credited as originating here. Tragedy struck on September 12, 1900, when a devastating fire, originating from a neighboring hotel, consumed most of the casino, leaving only the granite walls of "The Towers" standing. Despite this setback, the Towers were reconstructed by 1910 and have since endured numerous challenges, including severe hurricanes in 1938, 1954, and 1991, and another fire in 1965. The state of Rhode Island later acquired the building, which was then given to the town of Narragansett and subsequently restored.
