ZooTampa's origins trace back to a small animal exhibit on the campus of the University of Tampa in the 1930s, primarily featuring indigenous Florida species. The collection grew, prompting a move in 1957 to its current location in Seminole Heights, where it became known as Lowry Park Zoo, even featuring a "Fairyland" theme with concrete statues alongside live animals. By the 1980s, the zoo's facilities had deteriorated, leading community leaders to form the Lowry Park Zoo Association in 1982 with a vision to create a world-class zoological garden. After extensive fundraising and a complete redesign, the revamped zoo reopened in 1988, earning accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Since then, it has continually expanded and added new sections and attractions, often with geographic themes. In March 2018, the zoo underwent a significant rebranding, officially changing its name to ZooTampa at Lowry Park to emphasize its connection to Tampa and its evolving mission, while continuing its focus on conservation and education.
