About

Nestled in Melbourne, Florida, Brevard Zoo offers an immersive and interactive wildlife adventure, consistently ranked among the top zoos in the United States. This 75-acre, community-built destination stands out for its unique blend of traditional animal exhibits and engaging, hands-on experiences. Visitors can explore five distinct geographical loops: Expedition Africa, Lands of Change: Australia and Beyond, Wild Florida, Rainforest Revealed, and the Paws On children's area, plus a smaller Caribbean Trail. Each area is designed to transport guests into the natural habitats of over 900 animals representing more than 170 species from across five continents.

What truly sets Brevard Zoo apart are its unparalleled interactive opportunities. Imagine paddling a kayak through the Expedition Africa habitat, gliding past giraffes, rhinos, and zebras, or soaring above American alligators and crocodiles on the thrilling TreeTop Trek aerial ropes course. The zoo also offers a popular giraffe feeding experience, allowing guests to get eye-level with these majestic creatures, and walk-through aviaries where colorful lorikeets and cockatiels might land right on your arm for a treat. These close encounters foster a deep connection with wildlife and create unforgettable photographic moments.

Beyond the animal encounters, Brevard Zoo is deeply committed to education and conservation, evident in its engaging keeper chats, educational programs, and significant involvement in local ecosystem restoration, including sea turtle rehabilitation and mangrove forest initiatives. The Paws On section, specifically designed for younger visitors, offers a splash pad, petting zoo, and interactive play areas, ensuring fun for all ages. The zoo's natural, shaded environment makes it a pleasant visit even on warm Florida days, encouraging a relaxed pace to observe active animals, especially in the cooler morning hours. The story of Brevard Zoo began in 1986 with the formation of the East Coast Zoological Society of Florida, Inc. (ECZS), driven by a vision to create a local zoo as a hub for conservation education. A significant milestone was the generous donation of land by A. Duda & Sons, Inc.. Construction commenced in 1992, distinguished by a massive community effort. Over 16,000 volunteers, ranging from business owners to retirees, contributed their time and skills, making it "The World's Largest Volunteer Community Build." This collaborative spirit brought the Brevard Zoo to life, and it officially opened its gates to the public on March 26, 1994. Since its founding, the zoo has continuously evolved, expanding its exhibits and conservation efforts, including the opening of the Sea Turtle Healing Center in 2014 and significant renovations to its themed areas, such as "Lands of Change: Australia and Beyond" in 2017 and "Rainforest Revealed" in 2019.
