Cosley Zoo's journey began in 1973 when Paula Jones generously donated 2.65 acres of land to the Wheaton Park District, honoring Harvey Cosley, a previous landowner and her relative. It officially opened its doors in August 1974 as the Cosley Children's Park and Museum, initially featuring a selection of domestic farm animals. Within months, the park expanded its collection to include native Illinois wildlife, quickly growing beyond its initial scope.Over the years, the zoo evolved significantly. In 1975, a retired Burlington railroad caboose was acquired, becoming a unique exhibit. The facility changed its name to Cosley Animal Farm and Museum and, eventually, to its current name, Cosley Zoo, in 1999, to better reflect its growing offerings. A significant milestone was achieved in 2000 when Cosley Zoo received accreditation from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), a testament to its high standards of animal care and conservation efforts. The zoo has been a dedicated partner in the Blanding's Turtle Recovery Project since 2000, and in 2022, it expanded its focus to include North American wildlife, welcoming Canada lynx to its collection.
