The origins of the David Traylor Zoo trace back to the early 1900s in Emporia, initially an unofficial collection of various species. A notable addition in 1934 was "Monkey Island," established when Mayor Frank Lostutter acquired four rhesus monkeys. By the 1960s, the condition of the zoo in Soden's Grove received criticism. David Traylor, then a city accountant, took on the role of parks director in 1973 and dedicated himself to transforming the facility from basic fenced enclosures into well-designed exhibits for both animals and visitors. The Emporia Friends of the Zoo (EFOZ) was founded in 1978 to provide crucial financial support for the zoo's expansion, development, and maintenance. After 30 years of dedicated service, David Traylor retired as director in 2006, at which point the zoo was officially named the David Traylor Zoo in his honor. Significant updates and improvements to exhibits, technology, and guest amenities have been ongoing since 2019, reflecting the zoo's continuous commitment to animal welfare and visitor experience.
